Why has Amumu been a consistent bronze ban ever since season 2?
It really has always just amazed me how long this has been in effect.

He is rather straight-forward (simple to play), durable (letting them survive mistakes), scales well into the late-game (which is great when people don't know how to keep him down or end games) and greatly impacts teamfights (especially when the enemy team clusters or someone mispositions).
He just preys on common weaknesses in Bronze players while being simple enough that they can't really misplay him.

how is

I don't play Amumu that often personally; if I'm going to play a CC-tank jungler, I typically prefer Sejuani, Gragas, Zac or Nautilus for their versatility.
That said, Liandry's Torment is a rather powerful offensive item on Amumu and synergizes greatly with his kit. Not only does Amumu love the stats, the percent-health burn works great with his W and items he regularly builds (the slow from Rylai's Crystal Scepter and the aura of Frozen Heart both serve to amplify the damage dealt by Liandry's Torment).
The main issue with the item is trying to fit it into a build. Amumu already wants to build Cinderhulk and Rylai's Crystal Scepter early-game for durability, damage and a perma-slow, so you generally want to purchase resistances and CDR afterwards.
If you plan to build Liandry's Torment, I would probably build it in the late-game (where you are already durable and the enemy's have health).
A damage-oriented build would probably be along the lines of:

A more defensive build would be something like:

If you want to learn how to play Amumu, I have heard good things about Amumumu. He is a one-trick Amumu in Master tier who streams on Twitch.
While the games would differ between Master and Bronze, I find it helps to figure out how a champion is supposed to be played before adapting them to your games.
Note: While the "standard" skill order is E>Q>W, many of the higher-tier Amumu players I've seen max W first. I'm not sure exactly why, but I believe it provides faster and more mana-efficient clears while reducing his need for CDR.
Only really worth if you are going a little on the AP side
with either
or
(depends on what kind of tanks they have) and then you usually go tank after that.
I find going those early ap/tank items pretty useful for snowballing/ganking lanes while transitioning into late game tank is still smooth
*note: this build is his damage build, tank amumu is better in some situations
Bronze Carry Champs:

aoe cc (check)
solo carry potential (check)
that's why
I played one Jg Amumu game and tilted an enemy Singed, so perhaps I was playing right
I carried myself out of Bronze from Bronze 4 with a 77% win ratio on Amumu ^-^
Literally the easiest champion to play in the entire game + D Bane of Bronze a.k.a Hard Engage
His ult can singlehandedly win teamfights in bronze.
He has good bases, good scalings, can go tanky or damage or bruiser all of which work fairly well, and is fairly simple with farming being easy after initial few and ganks only needing to know how to land Q or ult/flash-ult.
Giant AOE Root/Disarm
i carry games with amumu in diamond lol.. i played amumu the 1st promo i had to diamond on March he is a good champion and can snowball a game well and he is WAY too easy to play.
I haven't really checked recently, but Amumu has had like crazy long stints of above average winrates since before I even started playing (S2).
The good people of this thread have listed a lot of good reasons that Amumu himself is a good pick, but honestly, it's not just Amumu. Tank jungles like that, that have CC, and can generally operate in the jungle, lend themselves to altruistic, team-oriented play that you can't get with carry jungles. That wins games. I know there's always an emphasis on carrying as an individual, but a good tank player can totally set their teammates up for success too.
I found tank junglers were very valuable when I was playing in Silver last season.
Most of my teams in that ranking consisted of three high-damage, low-utility carries and a support (who was sometimes a mage), leaving our team lacking three major qualities:
Tanks provide all three, so I rounded out our comps. The fact that I could CC the enemy team's squishy carries while my team blew them up was a definite bonus.
Great engage, hard CC, tanky, punishes poor positioning, literally so easy.
people in bronze don't know how to spread out so he regularly gets 5 man ults
amumu is a strong champ with a simple kit... he goes tank and has cc and does damage. people in lower elos dont know how to set him behind by invading his jungle taking 1st blue from him. then 2nd blue and they dont know enough about champion kits to know how and what to do/not to do vs certain champs.
just like vs rengar you wanna group early and not push alone cuz he can flank you and kill you out in the open and also you wanna upgrade to red sweepers and pink wards as soon as he is 6
