Is Garen the best option to climb with?

RookPusher··1 votes·4,002 views

Garen has something like a 52% WR and a 6% PR. He's not slated for any major changes nor has he had many in awhile. To that end, he seems like the best investment of time because practice will have a longer timeframe to bear fruit.

Am I wrong for thinking this? Is there another champ that can compete. I'm looking at top and mid only.

I think the issue people have with him is that, a lot like Darius, he isn't particularly easy to beat on your own while even a small mistake can result in your death. He's a bit overtuned right now, has a strong lane phase and can bully alot of melee champs around with very little room for mistakes - and even if you make them, with the sustain and the W he's quite forgiving. You can pick him into nearly anything, too. Also, to really get going Darius needs to get his stacks. Garen doesn't have anything like that. The villain mark is your "Go!" sign, and if you're building damage you can most likely just flash on any squishy and oneshot him if you managed to crush lane before.

Is he the best champion to climb with right now? In low elo ...maybe. In higher elos I don't think so.

Before the botlane changes, I would have recommended going an easy, yet consistent support like Sona, but right now everything is in flux.

The botlane in B5 is the most volatile place in the solar system.

My fav Garen build is very damage based, it is triforce into steracks then either duskblade for more q burst or ghost blade if I am getting kited. I end up with a very high health pool, and a bunch of resistances.

What is your playstyle? Garen is good if you can make use of passive and Q harass, but if you prefer to bully the opponent, I'd go with someone else like Pantheon, Riven, Darius, etc.

Uh, I like tankier champs that will dive the backline in the late game. I'm drawn to sustain champs and I main Maokai if that gives you any indication. I don't mind Garen, but I certainly don't use him optimally and I'm often frustrated against ranged poke like Teemo in a way I'm not on Shen, J4, or Maokai (probably because I'm not as familiar with Garen).

That first line makes me think Olaf would be good for you, and he comes with his own sustain and ranged harass along with his CC proof steroid ultimate that doubles as passive steroid.

Not sure if he is a safe bet, but I recommend him based on your playstyle, particularly if you're looking for an AD Juggernaut.

Alright, yeah I rarely play him. Also, I have the token for Brolaf so I support this message.

Pantheon doesn't bully like he used to, Riven takes alot of effort to be semi decent with and Darius has worse matchups than Garen. Garen you can pick into virtually anything and do okay and he can bully some lanes incredibly hard.

It's the Bronze phenomenon...Bronznomenon?

If he gets fed he's unstoppable. No one down here has heard of LDR.

He's pretty good since they buffed his W and Q, I'd say maxing Q before Spin is better now. Buffed Q with Grasp smacks hurt a lot now. I think if you really want to climb with him though you have to skimp out on Teleport and take Ignite -- it's important to destroy your lane and translate your lead into other lanes because Garen doesn't scale well into late game and his team fight potential isn't the greatest. Your primary objective at late game is to soak damage and delete carries with your ult.

I think I haven't had as much success with Garen as I'd like is because I been taking Teleport, I like having that global presence but I think ignite would be better. You just have to be smarter with your map positioning. You need to stay closer to objectives and constantly shove and rotate, instead of just splitting if you are using Ignite. But with that being said his laning phase and Q/Grasp procs are oppressive AF.

Garen is the strongest top laner in regards to 1v1ing in lane. Period. He isn't the most impactful on the outcome of games, but he will bully his lane and often times get fed off his lane.

That's just not true.

Garen has a weak early game due to his E damage being gated behind levels.

His lack of mobility often forces him to engage opponents on their terms.

His farming under tower is bad due to long base cooldowns.

Before his rework he was indeed a lane bully, but now he pretty much turns on at lvl 11.

Not really, today you have to base your trades with Garen off of grasp proc and q. In most of my Garen games I have been able to get first blood at lvl 2 cause I would poke with q at lvl 1, then all in with lvl advantage. The grasp is very helpful with Garen being a lane bully cause you gain health back, and you get a bunch of extra magic damage on his q. But this build requires you to max q instead of e.

I personnally ban him now. He's a bit too free to spin since the adc nerfs. Same goes for Darius by the way but Garen is very obnoxious to play agains't. I think he's a great champion to climb right now and easy to play obviously.

Garen is the champ who is great to learn the game with, only because he doesn't have any tricks or gimmicks so you have to learn things like managing waves and when to trade.

I am in a discord channel with a bunch of Garen mains. If you can give me your discord name and the number next to the name then I can get you invited. You can also go to any of the Glaccier’s videos, go to the description then click on the link for the discord server.

Everybody on the discord will be very happy to help you with Garen, the owner of the server is a pretty good Garen main in the plat-diamond area
