um, one viktor laser shreds 1/4 of your health and he has an AOE silence, while vel has cc and true damage, not to mention that his laser pretty much equals free kills for vel
Viktor's ult no longer has the silence, it just interrupts channels. They're not OP because they're both immobile, they are definitely viable picks though.
The laser has a lot of counterplay Between short range, and the fact the extra damage has a delay from the normal laser. Even if you're just moving you shouldn't so easily get hit by both.
He also no longer has a silence, instead has a channel interruption. Viktor has a lot of power, but almost all of that power has just as much counterplay. I could argue that Annie does everything Viktor does but better aside from having better poke.
Vel'Koz is the same thing. His spells are all skill shots and have plenty of counterplay. His Q can be side stepped fairly easily once you learn it. And his E's radius isn't very large. W's damage is mostly in the second hit, which you can easily walk out of. I wont argue that he's on the stronger side. But not OP at all.
LCS is often dominated by champions with little counterplay. Or by champions that can easily react to being counterplayed. As in with the Viktor vs Annie example above. If Viktor ever became LCS quality, Annie would be in the mid lane with him. Simply because she's very similar with much less counterplay.
The Lazer can reach up to 1400 units if I'm not horribly mistaken (REALLY short range), and the secondary burst applies after only 0.25 seconds, which means the damage comes out before you even can react to the laser itself. Annie has burst like Viktor, yes, but Viktor is much, much more versatile in that if he can't instagib a squishy he can fall back on poking, or kiting, or zoning, or wave clearing (that and he doesn't need flash or an ult cool down to burst just as hard/harder than annie).
The laser has a travel time. If you're at the far edge of its range and you get hit by both the initial and secondary burst without being CC'd, it shouldn't just delete your champ, it should delete LoL from your computer.
Annie gets to pick whether her stun is point-and-click or AoE: Viktor's happens to people who stand in the slow field. Yeah, I'm not that scared for Viktor, he's not OP and Riot knows it.
Death Ray has a 525 range and travels 500 units. Hitting someone at 1k is not easy to do unless they don't move from it. Most of his power comes from playing mid-range. Not long range. Vs most mids this means he can expect to get harassed a lot by champions that have less counterplay on top of their higher range.
Viktor no longer has silence, Vel cc is conditional on him hitting his Q or enemy being incapable of good dodge and his laser is only free kill against anyone who simply never played against normal ap mage, because all their ultimates work on the same principle - if you stay in the lane after they hit 6 and were harassed you will die Vel is just one the few you cannot flash away from and need to go in to disrupt it.
Really, I think a lot of people do not play against normal ap mages that often and do not know how they work and thus tend to give them free reign.
I have 100-0ed people with just a single Q on Viktor with a Lich bane (the initial damage +the Lich bane-esque damage proc and the Sheen effect) Viktor's burst truly is glorious!
I once won a 4v5 as carry Mundo! I typed the last sentence so fast my keyboard caught fire! I was the one who redesigned the jungle for S5, Riot stole the plans from my diary!
Come back to reality, man. If that happened, you were 6 levels up and the game was already over.
I was level 18 full build, they were the enemy mid at and were a couple levels behind, probably about 16, but only a little behind on gold and items. I had almost 900 AP from My hex core, Zhonya's, Rabbadons, Void staff, and Lich bane, and a blasting wand for Rylai's (I had sold boots because I could Kite with Q) along with masteries and stuff. They were also a squishy mage of course, but My Q dealt 120 (+20% AP) for the initial damage, and then the sheen enhanced proc dealt a total of 210 (+100% AP) (+175% AD) for a total of 330 (+120% AP) (+175% AD) (not considering that it was multiplied by the Havoc Mastery or also triggered arcane blade). They must have been a little lower than full health I guess (90ish%), but even I was surprised by its burst damage.
EDIT: You are right though, that was right before we destroyed the nexus turrets and the nexus itself, so the game was essentially over.
Vel has a lot of damage, but tends to be pretty unreliable; his entire damage can be avoided by moving vvell, and dashes screw pretty hard with him. The laser also doesn't translate to a kill everytime; it doesn't kill full health guys, again dashes and flash can counter it, and hard CC interrupts it. Vel's pretty balanced, even with the ridicioulous damage he can do.
My first game with Vel'koz was 24/5/21. Granted it was a normal game, but still. He's infredibly fun and his theme is awesome.
Really, this coming from a fan of those champs, we don't care a bit whether or not they are played in pro games, because they are fun and balanced right now and we don't need them nerfed for becoming popular.
skarner as far as i know is just a really strong solo q champ and isnt as good in competitive teams. and vel's passive makes him very powerful i never understood besides lack of mobility why he wasnt in the lcs that much. the other two i dont have much of an idea why they wouldnt be picked in lcs
viktor has a complete lack of mobility which leaves him open a lot and sion has been used a few times from what I have seen, however hes generally a hit and miss type of top laner.
Vel'koz and VIctor both suffer sin of being immobile mage in game, where early gank is king and gankers in general very strong. Vel'koz is also extrmely vulnerable in teamfight against high mobile disrupte enemy champions(hi Lee and Jarvan), who neutralize his ultimate for free and he needs it to be truly effective, as long as easy disrupt rules he is unplayable in competitive. His ult is channeled and he needs it to be a threat in teamfight.
Of the champions on that list, I think
has the best chance. Then again, that might be personal bias.
Vel'Koz has never been nerfed, to my knowledge. In fact, I think he was buffed slightly after release.
Sion sees some LCS picks as a top lane tank, but yeah the rest don't. I would just like to see a little more variety in general, being able to call the picks before they happen is just boring. I'm having a hard time watching any of the LCS stuff this season.
won't be surprised if vel gets popular soon.
