Why do all mages have to be burst mages?

Whatever happened to area control-esque mages like Taliyah or old AurelionSol ? Why do all mages have to build the same shit every game in order to 1shot?

Anivia AzirMalzahar Karthus Elise

edit: I get it, you build some of these champions as assassins. But just because your special snowflake build does burstier damage than normal, doesnt make these burst mages. Stop telling me if you disagree, make a Live Journal blog if I triggered you.

How are you supposed to control an area when most of the meta picks will dash around the area and one-shot you?

Your only defense as a mage in this meta is to one-shot the opponent before they one-shot you.

Blame assassins, whats the point of utility when ALL assassins just side step and stab you once to kill you.

because they removed sustain from battle mages and opted them into burst mages

also how is taliyah a control mage???? her EWQ is literally a burst combo

All mages are burst mages when you don't build MR.

Because if you are trying to DPS against an opponent who oneshots you lose. so everyone is looking to oneshot, simple as that.

And i mean why should the mages bother with DPS anyway? Marksmen already bring what you need for the enemy tanks and you kinda autolose if they pick a bad marksman against a strong tank anyway since they wont be able to pull their weight.

Additionally midlane pickrates are dominated by assassins&burst mages who do quick trades and very fast all ins, to beat them you gotta match them.

Because mages have cooldowns. If you used all your spells, and your enemy is still alive, you lost. Also, Taliyah is as "control mage" as she was on release. Anivia is a better example of area control mage. Other non-burst mages are Azir, Karthus, Lissandra, Heimer and Ziggs.

Because if they cant kill in 0.2s they are dead or the damage is healed.

why?

because in a 5v5 setting where how fast your team accrues xp and gold determines the outcome having a unit that can't win 1v1's because

"immobile, control, damage over time" doesn't equal big gains.

tack that on with the fact that most control mages are preferred for roles other than damage and you can see why we have champs like:

Azir Janna Katarina Lissandra Morgana Zyra

who are either unpopular or left to the support role.

I mean when you are ahead everyone becomes a burst mage even Soraka can 1 shot someone with a Q E. Same reason if Soraka went full crit, 1 basic attack would do 1.4k. But if Soraka went bruiser build she would probably be weak by the lack of ranged bruiser item.

GankLord1/10/2020, 11:10:28 PM3 votes

Because Riot Prioritizes AD items over AP items. Look at the wealth of variety AD champs have to choose from vs what Mages have to choose from.

I'm sorry what? taliyah not a burst mage? because her ult doesn't deal damage her basic abilities have high damage, taliyah frequently can go E>W>Q and kill you or leave you with like 10% health

Minimac20001/11/2020, 12:47:37 AM2 votes

Because all damage now has been escalated to burst damage

Honestly, other than Azir...

The vast majority of mages are stuck with pretty much the same choosing of like 6-8 relevant items, and pretty much everything else is objectively shit for mages.

Like...there's very specific exceptions. Ryze wants all the mana, so he goes for all the mana and still has comparable burst to those who went for AP. Veigar scales his AP passively, so at this point you could honestly build close to whatever the fuck you wanted and still have apeshit burst by 25 minutes. But most mages are stuck with some combination of 5-6 the following items: item 3030 item 3152 item 3146 item 3102 item 3151 item 3285 item 3089 item 3157 item 3135, and/or whatever boots.

Most of the rest of the AP items just dont see play on mages anymore, outside of a few exceptions.

Things like: item 3100 item 3116 item 3027 item 3124 item 3115 item 3907 item 3905 item 3003 item 3165 are considered niche...about half the AP items in the game (not counting Abyssal Mask cause it's technically a tank item now) are only built on specific champions, or under specific circumstances (i.e. needing GW cause of a Mundo). In essence, pretty much every mage feels like a burst mage because the itemization (and also the RUNES) are pretty basic, no matter which one you play, outside of someone like Azir or Ryze who have certain quirks that make them build differently.

Sure...TF can use unblade/Nashor's/Lich Bane pretty well for some hybrid bullshit. But why use Gunblade/Nashor's/Lich Bane when just building for a clean one shot generally gives you both better stats AND teamfight potential? Sure, Anivia can run Rod of Ages/Seraphs to help her mana issues...but why would you ever have mana issues building like a burst mage and having one random, lucky Q deal 2/3 of some poor bastard's hp and set you up for a free point and click kill with E? Why even bother trying to aim your Karthus Q? Press R, ad you just deleted no less than half the total hp of the entire enemy team, barring spellshield or zhonyas.

There's no real incentive for most mages to build as anything other than burst mages. >.>
