How is Lucian not up there?

LostFr0st76 votes

He's busy mid and top lane; no time for bot.

I belive that even if he is top lane he still an attack damage carry, unless you build tank or ap Lucian.

Yup. You must be fun at parties :P

AP Lucian is great though, everyone starts making Black Magic jokes and we lose the game because I really suck at him.

Vallalan1 votes

lucian is honestly not as good this patch. he's still strong in the sense that he can rush bork and do a lot of work. but the mana nerfs were very real with him. I've been building IE/Shiv every game on him because of my playstyle, but I go OOM quite often and have to be VERY frugal about using my spells now.

he's still good, but he's not top tier like he was last patch. he shouldn't be pick/ban that's for sure. he will always be popular as well since he's fun.

now draven....lol. draven should never be "meta" or "popular". he should be super good in the hands of good players who have put in many games to master him. that was his niche and has ALWAYS been his niche. he's a super lane dominant champion in the right hands who is more rewarding than most adcs if you can play him properly.

right now though you have anyone trying to abuse draven and while the bad players are still bad at draven, he's so strong early now they are at least having some success on him which is appaling to me.

Xayah is just hideously overloaded. and Cait will always be a top pick as long as her lane phase is as dominant as it is and her mid game isn't 100% trash to compensate.

Overloaded? She only really has two things that stand out though, her ultimate and her E.

The rest is fairly average?

Vallalan1 votes

she really has very softly defined weaknesses at best.

she has everything an adc wants:

self peel, instant press attack speed steroid/damage steroid (does both), burst damage, wave clear, zone control (with feathers), crowd control utility (root), also has a strong teamfight.

then you gotta look at weaknesses since adcs all look op when you only list their strengths:

no mobility (but has self peel to make up for it, so hardly a weakness), no chase potential. (an actual weakness), no long range poke (small weakness)

she has too many strengths, and no real hard weakness besides the fact she can't chase. and many adcs have more than just one really strong weakness. Jhin is a good example. he's strong in a lot of ways, but immobile, has no sustained damage, sucks at taking t owers/objectives.

Thefrostyviking1 votes

She is fairly simple though?

Her weaknesses are range, mobility, sustain and the very feathers.

She is highly vulnerable to harass and poke, no sustain despite short range makes this worse.

And nearly all her kill potential lies with her feathers until she reaches like 80% crit.

That is both great and utterly terrible, because which opponent will stand still when fighting?

I´ve won that lane and games playing Ashe....

Ïnsidious6 votes

he's got a 10% pick rate, and he wins late because nobody picks early game carries to counter him. Twitch players understand that he's situational, so they don't pick him into lane-bullies, so when he does get picked it's into utility and generalist adc's who can't out damage him late

53% winrate is not bad in plat+, and when he's only in 1 in 10 games I can't say I see the issue

He has a high winrate because of his dedicated 1 tricks mostly, at best for the average playerbase it's slightly over 50%.

He also doesn't have anywhere near the highest playrate. Cait, Lucian and Xayah are all picked much more often.

Alright my bad, was some bug on the sit i was looking at, he does indeed have 15% which is half of caits.

But his winrate is no joke even then, he is the 4th most played after cait, lucian and ez.

Maintaining over 53% winrate in plati is nuts, and had you looked at how he is played in diamond you´d understand why people consider him busted.

Any player that learns how to play twitch properly below Diamond is nearly getting a free win, that's how strong he is, and even in Diamond he´s massive.

And that's why the boards and many others have been headhunting him x)

How he's played in diamond is meaningless to me, I play in master/challenger frequently. I know his cheese strats, I know how he wins games and I know how to counter them.

Maintaining a high winrate is less impressive in high elo than low elo, because his winrate is coming from dedicated Twitch players who average 70% winrates on him.

Players like rat IRL quite literally influence twitch's overall winrate by themselves.

If at all possible Riot shouldn't balance the game around high elo tho x) Only when a champ grows truly insanely powerful there would it be alright to do so since Espots money is a thing.

Even if SKT will win every championship.

And it really is super frustrating, i am not sure but i think my current MMR averages around low plati due to not playing ranked a lot instead staying around with my friends.

But i find it extremely hard to shut a twitch down, unless i dumpster him down to 0,6,0 something then it feels like he becomes a ticking time bomb ready to explode at a moments notice. Not even Vayne or kog gives me the same sense of crisis when i can't stop them x)

I am really fairly sure that Twitch ulti, followinging the nerfs to everyone else, has simply gotten too strong in comparison, there is little value in picking anything else if you can get Twitch as long as you are even half decent at the champ as a marksman.

And-....... i might be a little salty since i can't even play my main ADC well and i got sad about being stomped by a few twitches some games in a row.

Thing is, this game can't be balanced and they don't really try to keep it so.

They take the "try to keep things fresh" approach.

Technically, Twitch is a ticking time bomb in the same way as Kog'Maw. You have to be able to close out the game before you get outscaled or understand where he might try to cheese you from stealth and make sure he doesn't snowball.

He's pretty easy to shut out with a bully support when played right, let alone if your jungler comes to shut him down even further.

I don't recognize Twitch ult as OP, it actually used to be much better. It's crucial to his identity as a late game hyper carry.

If anything could even be considered too strong it would probably be his stealth/camouflage. It's the same story with Evelynn, not being seen in solo queue where most people aren't fully thinking or considering where you could be is a massive advantage.

Don't like saying it like this but it's one of the few cases where the counterplay is quite literally "get good"

I'm using the data for adc twitch only, I am not including jungle. And by pick rate, it means the percentage of time that twitch is picked for that role. Right now having the 4th highest pick rate, and the highest win rate. And I'm not whining here either, twitch is my second highest mastery on a champion, so I would have no reason for him to be nerfed unless I feel he really is oppressive.

We actually have a ton of ADC diversity right now.

Xayah, Draven, Caitlyn, Ezreal, Lucian. Five strong picks, and then Twitch hiding in the shadows (like usual).

Compared to every other season where there has always been a "trinity" of 3 strong ADCs, this is new and different!

DunkinNoobs27 votes

You do know that Ezreal is the worst adc in the game atm, right? That's the opposite of a strong pick.

Zenthon Prime1 votes

Well, he's still a very popular pick, at least.

Maybe he isn't actually strong - but at least he's seeing play.

In most past seasons, you generally only saw 3 ADCs at a time.

SirLapse3 votes

Ezreal is only the worst because quite literally his players have questionable gameplay patterns. He's one of the choices for "autofilled into ADC" since he's pretty simple to pick up. And yet, he takes a lot of skill to master compared to most ADCs. Irony.

DunkinNoobs4 votes

{quoted}

Ezreal is only the worst because quite literally his players have questionable gameplay patterns.

He loses lane to everyone, get outscaled by everyone, and isn't even better midgame anymore now that adcs have better rush items. There's simply no point in playing Ezreal anymore other than being safe, but who cares if you don't die if you still lose.

SirLapse1 votes

He is one of the safest lanes in the whole game. You do not need to go aggressive, and yet everyone who plays him has just a item 3070 but assumes they can fight the same way as someone with item 3133 or item 1038 . Get that outta here. I've seen more bad Ezreal's than I have seen bad Yasuo's and that's an accomplishment. The good ones carry really hard and don't seem to have any weaknesses outside of pre-item 3004 and not having as much damage as some other champs later into the game.

DunkinNoobs2 votes

Being safe doesn't win games, especially when everyone outscales you. You have to actually scale for safe play to benefit you, and Ezreal does not. Even his Muramana Triforce combo barely outshines other adcs 2 items these days with a much weaker build path. He loses early, goes even mid, and loses late. Why would you ever pick this champ again?

SirLapse1 votes

Being safe does win games if your composition is meant to shine by mid game. This usually beats out stuff like Ashe, Jinx, and even Caitlyn. He's a skillshot champion and needs a lot of game knowledge and mastery to really use him to full potential when compared to MissFortune who only needs half the effort. The main difference Ezreal has from other ADCs is that, like Draven, he doesn't really care about peel as much as other ADCs simply because he has a way around the enemy's strats. An escape that can traverse walls, poke that can chunk people once Muramana is finished, and the ability to be flexible with things like Iceborn and Sterak's.

His extremely high pick rate and the winrate only being 5% off from 50% shows how much potential he has behind him. Expecting everyone in solo queue, especially autofilled ADCs (who he is a popular pick for) to be bringing that out is ridiculous. He shines literally the MOST in solo queue as a well-rounded champion.

DunkinNoobs4 votes

{quoted}

His extremely high pick rate and the winrate only being 5% off from 50% shows how much potential he has behind him.

I don't think you know what "extremely high" means. His pickrate was 29% 5 patches ago and his winrate was 46.5%. His pickrate has dropped by over half in the past 5 patches and his winrate has gone down by 1.5%. Your stupid logic says it should be going up, but it actually did the opposite. Why? Because Ezreal is garbage, and people are realizing it. There are 5 adcs with higher pickrates than Ezreal and they all have vastly higher winrates than he does; pointing to his pickrate to justify his terrible winrate is nonsense when apparently every other adc isn't bound by that logic.

Thankfully, we don't even need to have this argument because we know how well the best Ezreals are doing, which is what really matters. The very best Ezreals are winning 50.62% of the time, which is absolutely abysmal. That's the worst out of all 20 adcs that this site collects data for. The champ really is that bad right now, so stop making nonsensical excuses for his poor performance.

SirLapse1 votes

It's not really nonsensical. A well-rounded champion that excels at nothing is a generalist. They'll be good at doing everything, but the best at nothing. That exactly why he excels. He does much better in assassin-based metas which we've already left, and honestly the main reason people would be dropping him is for stronger picks to climb faster/better. Doesn't change how well-rounded he is.

Also, his pick rate is still well over 20%. Just because there are stronger picks currently does not really change the fact that he is picked for what he has and is usually a comfort pick more than anything else. The players can't be reflected by statistics alone for the reasoning they pick him, but then we have to look at his historical strengths and weaknesses. He usually has had low amounts of weaknesses outside of lacking reliable burst and pre-Muramana cannot outdps other picks unless ahead.

DunkinNoobs1 votes

{quoted}

It's not really nonsensical. A well-rounded champion that excels at nothing is a generalist. They'll be good at doing everything, but the best at nothing.

I'm gonna stop you right there because your entire basis is faulty. Ezreal is not a generalist, nor is he good at everything. Neither is Lucian for that matter, but that's another post for another time. As for Ezreal, he's about as specialist of an adc as they come; he's all about the poke and slipperiness but pays in the form of vastly below par dps for an adc, especially considering how he builds. His power curve is also extremely specialized, being weak both early and late while dominating at the 2-3 item point.

Frankly, there aren't many adcs that really qualify as generalists, with Caitlyn being the only adc that really comes close. But Ezreal isn't much of a generalist even when compared to other adcs: he has clearly defined strengths, very glaring weaknesses, and a very wonky powercurve. In no sense of the word is Ezreal a generalist no matter how you choose to define the term. There are many, many times where Ezreal is an objectively bad adc to pick, and given how weak he is right now, that's basically most of the time. Not only is he weak against the meta champs in his own role, but meta champs in other roles don't synergize with his playstyle and his items are also on the weak side. There's literally no reason to pick him atm other than for fun or because you simply can't play any other adc; that's the hallmark of a weak champ right there.

SirLapse1 votes

{quoted}

I'm gonna stop you right there because your entire basis is faulty. Ezreal is not a generalist, nor is he good at everything. Neither is Lucian for that matter, but that's another post for another time.

What the hell? Even Riot themselves has noted Lucian as a generalist. Ezreal was king of generalists before Lucian came back into the meta, and that means Ezreal had an entire season practically to be the best generalist. Koreans loved using him all of last season and especially the beginning of the assassin meta this season. You have not been noting any historical evidence of what you're saying and you want to tell me that Ezreal is not a generalist? Think about what an ADC's most important priority is. It's doing consistent damage and NOT DYING.

When your champion has a dash on it, has consistent hard to punish damage through poke, and more importantly a global ultimate that allows your presence to fall off less when you're not in range of an objective or teamfight (with the possibility of using it as an execute), HOW IS IT NOT A GENERALIST? Caitlyn can poke early, Varus can poke early, Miss Fortune can poke early, hell even Twitch can poke early via W>E. But none of those champions use that as a consistent measure for DPS by mid game, Ezreal however does.

On the side for Lucian, he also has a dash, high sustained damage in closer range scenarios where most ADCs would be punished, and more importantly has an ultimate that has huge execute potential when used properly.

Compare this to Caitlyn for example who has the clear advantage of high range but exchanges it for low attack speed. She will do TERRIBLY against close range assassins and such unless the enemy hits a trap. That condition cannot always be fulfilled, therefore if the meta has more assassins, she will not do as well as she is doing right now. Generalists in comparison never have a bad time unless Riot nerfs them into the ground like they did to Lucian, and they are rewarded the most if their Core items are buffed since they win the numbers war through consistency.

Frankly, there aren't many adcs that really qualify as generalists, with Caitlyn being the only adc that really comes close.

With my above point, I've essentially proved to myself that you have no idea what entails a generalist ADC, you only know what is a dominant ADC and a not so dominant ADC, which anyone and their mother who doesn't even play the game can make conclusions of after seeing a couple statistics. You've confused "generalist" as "the strongest available no matter what" rather than stuff like Lee Sin who are "never bad" unless nerfed into the floor (or the respective items the champ uses have been nerfed). The only weakness Ezreal has is based on Tear usage and if the Ezreal is bad, he will likely not have it done by 20 minutes into the game. There have been many of these Ezreals and it skews his power curve more than what you're currently imagining.

In exchange, there are other ADCs that actually prioritize damage over safety and they are rewarded the most in this meta. Naturally a generalist like Ezreal doesn't use that as a primary strength, so he will not be as good.

I think you need to re-assess what a generalist is and not be going full-on stereotyping based on conclusions that are reflective of the meta and not the champion itself.

DunkinNoobs1 votes

I'm sad to tell you, but Riot doesn't seem to know what generalist means either since they've also called Graves jungle a generalist. I don't know what on earth their definition of a generalist means because it most certainly does not mean "is good at a bunch of different things without excelling at anything in particular". That's what most people mean when they call a champion a generalist and neither Lucian nor Ezreal qualify. I've already told you why Ezreal is not a generalist, so I guess it's time for a Lucian post.

All Lucian does is lots of burst damage at short range while being mobile. Outside of his ult, he has the shortest effective range in the game and he also has 0 team utility. His reliance on burst damage over DPS makes him susceptible to tank stacking and gives him a distinct "win early and mid before you fall off late" power curve. In terms of playstyle, Lucian is easily among the most binary in his class during the laning phase. Due to his short range, his entire game is to dash into range of the enemy, do his combo, and then run away and hope that was enough to win the trade. When he wins those trades, Lucian is good. When he doesn't, he's terrible. Lucian is good in teamfights when the enemy has to come to him and bad in teamfights against teams that outrange him or have lots of AOE. Due to his short range, his siege is also among the worst for adcs, making his team significantly weaker against split pushing. Just like Ezreal, he has a very distinct profile of strengths and weaknesses and there are objectively right and wrong times to pick Lucian.

The only adc who doesn't fit that profile to some degree is rework Caitlyn who is strong to average at all stages of the game, has enough utility to be useful in nearly any situation, has enough range to not be countered by range on the enemy team, has a decent mix of dps and burst to make her a threat to all kinds of enemies, and has enough inherent safety to be safe against divers and assassins provided her teams. No other adc fits all of those checkboxes which makes her the only real generalist adc.

That's what most people mean when they call a champion a generalist and neither Lucian nor Ezreal qualify. I've already told you why Ezreal is not a generalist, so I guess it's time for a Lucian post.

So if you can't even agree on what Riot believes is a generalist, then I'll point it out to you that they've consistently noted that there is NOTHING setting apart a generalist from other specialized champions other than simply numbers. Highest numbers available? Generalist will perform well. Low or mediocre numbers? Champion underperforms. Holds true with Ezreal and Lucian respectively considering how Blade of the Ruined King moved up Lucian from his garbage state last season. That in mind, Ezreal and Lucian are perfect fits for generalists since they give nothing up for what their weaknesses are supposedly. Lucian in particular has high burst to compensate for low range as an ADC, and it's garbage if he doesn't have the numbers to compete with people. This is unlike Corki because your builds are glass cannon and have no flexibility for items such as Black Cleaver, Guardian Angel, etc. He does not have high flexibility on defense options like Lucian and Ezreal do and this has held true throughout the game's history.

Just like Ezreal, he has a very distinct profile of strengths and weaknesses and there are objectively right and wrong times to pick Lucian.

Not correct. Another ADC has to be directly contesting him for it to be that way. We've conveniently had them but it's extremely noticeable if a generalist is succeeding at the game. They have higher pick rates and higher rates of success without needing to know literally everything about the champion. Graves was especially reflective of this trend with his farming style and high accessibility to tankiness, burst, and defensive itemization. All traits that a generalist utilizes. The defensive itemization/inherent stats especially say "you are punished less for picking this champion at any given time, whether first pick or last pick."

She has unique strengths, but is not a generalist. Her mid game power spike is easily contested by things like Lucian and Draven. Infinity Edge got a cost reduction, a lot of supports in the game that are popular boost her effectiveness, and stuff like Jhin, Ashe, etc. who beat her are simply not popular right now. This is significant to her place in the meta. We've seen this for things like Ahri utterly outdone by stuff like pre-nerf Viktor, Leblanc, and Syndra who are either weak or need immense skill to contest her compared to before. If the counters are not prevalent then the champion has a lot more room to do what they want to do.

ModCaptainMårvelous2 votes

Worth noting:

13% Playrate (Pretty damn high for an ADC. Although he's #6 among ADCs) A largely varying win-rate (Depending on runes/masteries/etc, Ezreal will go anywhere from sub 40% all the way to 67%) A huge winrate spike based on games played (1-5 Ezreal usually has a 44% win rate. 200+ jumps to 52%)

So you end up with a highly played ADC (although not the highest) with runes/skills/etc that vastly alter his win rate.

Not saying he's "GOOD" right now but comparatively, most other ADCs require less skill to be good.
