How do I increase my contribution to kills ratio?
It just seems like whenever I try to group more in a losing game, I lose farm, die more, and get nothing out of it.

Unless you have a much better teamfighting comp, your team shouldn't be looking to 5v5 when behind. So you want to be there for picks and make sure your team has the number advantage.
When to roam/group and when to farm isn't an exact science. But if you have proper vision control, it's pretty easy to get "unfair fights" in in your favor.
