I was shocked. It was the first time in like 3 or 4 patches I've even seen one. He went mid. I AFK farmed top lane all game, while everyone else was all mid, and we did the same amount of damage.

https://i.gyazo.com/1823e3bcc41c5f0fcdb18ddf8bf89c3a.png He has a 0.68% play rate. He's played in half a percent of games (and less than a quarter of a percent when played middle).

Deleting him probably would've been more respectful than leaving him like this.

He was really fun before they totally ruined his Q. Worst feeling spell In the whole game.

NineTailedMystic9 votes

But before it was the worst feeling to lane against.

ReQnosis1 votes

His Q use to "auto-attach" right? *Cast on players, instantly.

Being a Zilean Main, I'd love to see the comparison stats of what he use to be like Vs. his current iteration.

Right now, I play him as a support and bully out the enemy bot, nearly every game.

The lv2 power spike (Q + W + Q) for the aoe stun is mad sexy and often results in first blood.

The lv3 power spike (Q + E + W + Q + E) is also amazing for perma-slow/stunning the enemy ADC/Support.

His late game is also pretty strong, as I can auto-revive our ADC or AP mid (or tank, if necessary) along with having a zonyas to help myself from getting bursted.

gubigubi1 votes

I personally don't care how strong he is. I know his kit is really strong. The slows and ult are really really good on their own. I just can't stand the way his Q feels now. The old one was so smooth it felt really good putting 2 bombs on people. I'm not a Zilean main though. So if you enjoy the champion as a main of Zilean then maybe Riot didn't do that bad of a job. IMO retaining the old player base of a champion is more important then trying to make it a popular pick.

Implying a low pick rate means the champion is bad.

Kennen 0.84% pick. 54% win.

Low pick right means they are probably not the best to choose for the meta like zilean is really good against assassins because who doesn't want a low cd ga? But right now the meta is tanks/bruisers/utility midlaners and the occasional assassin.

A Miss Fortune2 votes

The thing is that Zilean's ultimate is probably the only good thing about him besides his MS buff/debuff.

He has the worst passive in the game, his Bombs are insanely easy to dodge once let alone twice for the stun to pop, and his cooldown reduction ability just feeds into his useless Bombs and MS buff.

I think Zilean's ultimate is awesome, but holy crap at least give Zilean a real kit. At least make his Bombs point and click again.

Catastrop2 votes

I think people seem to forget that his MS Debuff Enables the stun. Frankly I think he really just needs that passive change.

3TWarrior2 votes

lol, riot's idea of a passive would be that he gets stronger the more time passes in the game XD like CassCassiopeia , veigar, etc

Zilean is bad against assassins. Yes Ga works

But good luck hiting any q on an assassins

Zilean sadly needs new rework

3TWarrior1 votes

his Q has 900 range and isn't telegraphed, meaning his Q is essentially the same as an ahri Q but less immediate

also, being an AP mage with fairly ridiculous cooldowns and the potential for a double guardian angel can mean some serious damage dished out.

his biggest issue is his mana costs

4ManVotedAgainst1 votes

I am largely/partly/mostly responsible for his win-rate being higher-than-average.

I guarantee you it would drop below 50% if everybody played him.

Ionian1 votes

Again, that does not mean the champion is bad. A high pickrate just means a lot of clueless people are playing it.

Thresh, literally the most picked champion in the game (37%), and by far the best support, has a winrate of 49%.

DorkunedAuras1 votes

cough vayne, one of the most picked champs in the game, 51% win rate. She needs to be hit.

Ionian1 votes

I think everyone knows that already. "muh skill champion" Yeah the statistics show :^)

junglerboy165 votes

you do realize that having .68% pick rate means he shows up once every 147 games, right? When there are roughly 27 million players playing any given day, and most play several games in a row, you realize that he shows up in thousands of games a day.

Pick % is meaningless if you don't look at context of how large the pick pool is.

Best Darius KR30 votes

I'm sorry, so in each 147 GAMES YOU PLAY, you see one Zilean? How is that meaningless? Many people don't even play that many games in 3 months

Yeah 1 in every 147 games is really just ridiculous I absolutely agree.

Sakura Mirage3 votes

Just needs a new passive or for it to be global again (but I don't think riot will do this because they said they tried to remove global passive as it gave hidden power).

Dr Poro3 votes

You did the same dmg, but did you also bring the utility Zilean brings? Stun, slow, speed buff and A FUCKING REVIVE!

disregardable4 votes

No, I was AFK farming top while my team 4v5'd them.

If you can get a Zilean stun off, you're probably in a situation where you would've won, anyway.

Call me when you pick see Karthus, I don't even remember the last Karthus I saw. Is he even still in the game?

TheFancySkeleton1 votes

As a Level 5 Karthus I can state that: I've seen TWO Karthuses... Karthi...

pive2 votes

I played a game with a Swain recently. That species is practically extinct.

3TWarrior1 votes

it's because he's not fun at all to play as...his poke is dreadful until late game. His farm is "please don't kill me, i'm under my tower!", and the fact that all of his damage is damage over time...his abilities don't even fit his title, the master tactician. he's just an underpowered mage atm who come late game can survive anything for a few precious seconds

BluePolarizer1 votes

Swain is an incredible lane bully that I've seen alot in plat games during the tank meta. Now he gets destroyed by Vayne so nobody plays him.

Celeste Benal1 votes

Still waiting for Mord/Zilean bot. Something about having a passive that grants extra XP based on your lane partner's level synergizing with Mord always getting full XP no matter how many people are in lane.

Morde mains tried. It's apparently useless.

would've been funny to see though, for 2 seconds you get super speed XD

He needs 2 things, a new passive and lower cooldown on spells.

New Passive: Reminiscence

If Zilean stands still for 4 seconds he creates a Memory (a ghost of himself) (only 1 at the time, creating a new one eliminates others) Memories cannot be target. Pressing Alt-key allows to control the memory (the original zilean can still be moved and damaged, like when controlling other clones) this memory looks "ghostly" and distinguishable from the original. Memories don't grant vision and disappear after zilean dies.

Memories can't move but can cast spells with shared cooldown with the original. 4 seconds after of casting the first spell with a memory, the memory fades.

Now, memories could have 2 possible auras, either: 1- nearby allies get 8% extra XP. 2- when Zilean casts a spell, allied champions near the Memory get +5% cooldown reduction for X seconds and/or nerby enemies -5% cdr.

New Passive: Chronodisplasia

Zilean creates a Memory after standing still for 5 seconds (an unkillable immobile ghost of himself).
Zilean can have a maximum of 1/2/3 Memories

When Zilean or any ally clicks on a Memory, it's teleported to it ((600 range) or 500/600/700) consuming the memory and granting Zilean some XP (regardless of who uses the Memory). (this would compensate for the XP/gold lost while Zilean is roaming and standing to leave the Memories)

3TWarrior1 votes

I think those are neat ideas, but it will or it won't shock you that you basically just made zilean into another Zed

or, with the second one, the zilean or ally could power level zilean to be a lane bully (potentially) and of course there's the issue of him doing the same thing as thresh, only delayed

Saianna1 votes

I'm sorry, but I don't understand this part:

He went mid. I AFK farmed top lane all game, while everyone else was all mid, and we did the same amount of damage.

Could you explain..?

DrCyanide2 votes

Despite the OP trying not to engage in team fights while Zilean did engage in teamfights, the two did almost the exact same damage to enemy champions.

Saianna2 votes

Now.. it makes sense!

Thanks

I played against a Zil support today. It was hell to get through the laning phase as the ADC. We got poked out of lane so hard. But we were able to come back and win the game.

Crossette1 votes

If you double-stack his Q late game you pretty much insta-kill squishies.

gg

3TWarrior1 votes

on a pretty low cooldown too, and if you get item 3285 ludens, your damage gets pretty ridiculous, especially if the opponents are forced or dumb enough to stick to each other

if I remember right, his Q has a 90% ap ratio and idk the cooldown but it's pretty short

FreeMilk1 votes

You know, many champions have a 1-2% play rate. Even Akali is in between those two numbers. I mean, have you seen Urgot's play rate? It's even lower than Zil's.

Renascent1 votes

In my opinion, the reason why hardly anybody plays Zilean after his rework is that he takes too much time to do well with.

I make the claim from my own experience because Zilean was (and still is) one of my mains, and the transition between pre-rework and post-rework Zilean was excruciatingly painful; The skill-gap between point-and-click EVERYTHING vs having to aim two short-delay AoE ground-targeted spells back-to-back was VERY apparent. After about 10 games with the guy, I felt ready to give up. Then, buff after buff, game after game, I finally got Zilean back as one of my mains.

This was after about 30 games. There are several champions, like Fizz and Yasuo, who I try out for the very first time and getting fed/dealing the most damage on the team. That's saying something: if it takes 30x as many games to learn how to play Zilean compared to most other champs, why not take the time to learn 30 other champs?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Zilean is super weak; When you see a stacked Nasus fly at your team at lightning speeds with no hopes of bursting him down because he'll just get back up, you're definitely gonna think "omgosh Zilean is so broken".

However, as simple as his kit looks, it just takes too much experience and skill to pull off effectively for the average player, compared to one-click linear skillshots that others have like, oh I don't know, Blitzcrank Nautilus Leona Thresh . Heck, even Nami only has to worry about landing the AoE once to get the stun.

The rewards for learning/mastering new Zilean are incredible, though. The ability to spam Sejuani ults, Nasus slows, homeguard level speedups, and GA passives is amazing. I would go so far as to say this is a perfect example of skill-to-reward ratio, as compared to Annie Irelia XinZhao , who offer so much after just a game's worth of experience with them.

I truly hope people will take the time to learn this amazing champ. This game has so many forgotten champs that my style itself has become "play a new champ every other game" and "stay away from meta champs".

It's fun seeing posts like this, really. I play Zilean as a mid laner, and have an 80-90% win rate on him. Why? He does great damage, and wields powerful utility while being safe and relevant throughout the entire game. His laning is pretty strong(pretty much everyone you fight is a skill matchup), roams are very strong, and his teamfight is very strong.

So let's talk about mid lane Zilean:

His passive:

Have you ever maintained good cs, and killed your laner? If you've done it correctly, you should be two levels up on them when they return. If you're Zilean, that becomes three levels a good portion of the time. The hidden power of his passive is that if you can manage your lane correctly you can facilitate an increasingly wide level-gap between yourself and your laner, making yourself nearly unfightable for your opponent, and for most of the enemy team when you're levels ahead.

His Q:

I see a lot of people complaining about this, and I do not share those complaints. For people who can land his Q, it's better than ever. An AoE 2k+ damage nuke with a 1.5 second stun that's on a four second cooldown late? Sign me up, I don't care if I need to work to land it now. I personally can land these in lane on most people, and when I can't, I aim for low hp minions since a double bomb on one of them will instantly detonate both and stun, which is just as good as landing it on the actual laner, better in some cases since they instantly take damage from both. In the event they don't stand near minions, and I can't land them on the laner, I can wipe almost the whole wave with two bombs, if nothing else I can farm up and still be godly in teamfights. Early game two bombs will usually chunk 50% of your opponent's health depending on who they are, and upon completing almost any AP item two bombs will instakill caster minions and bring the melee minions very low(hint: AA them low then just wipe the whole wave for easy cs)

His W:

The skill that makes your Q spammable. The skill that makes your 99% slow almost permanent. Do I even need to put anything else here?

His E:

This is a 99% slow/speed buff that can be maintained almost permanently with W because by the time it times out, it's ready to be used again. This skill slows as much as Thresh's ultimate, and can be spammed.

"Oh gee that Udyr is sure getting close" Hit E, casually stroll past, stop to get that minion wave, continue escaping

"Oh hey my jungler is coming in for a gank" Hit E, instantly burn their flash, probably still get the kill

His R:

Let me start this section by saying his ult is on a 36 second cooldown late game. An extra life, every 36 seconds. This not only makes Zilean very safe, it makes his allies very safe. You can speed them up, slow the enemy, stun the enemy, and with your ult even save them from certain death.

"Zilean is totally weak against assassins"

Lol no. Please allow me to tell you how to deal with assassins:

Can they kill you in under 3 seconds?

If the answer is no, use Time Warp and walk away.

If the answer is yes, hit R, then do the above when you get up, or fling two bombs and one shot them, your call. In the event you aren't level 6, play safe until you are.

Congratulations, you survived where many other mages would've died! Unless they're super fed, or you put yourself in an absolutely awful situation, you shouldn't be dying to assassins. Even if you can't kill them, Zilean is well-equipped to survive pretty much everything. I mean honestly, the magic trick to insta-winning lane vs 90% of assassins is having your jg stand by, and when they waste their gap closer just E them for the free kill as your jungler walks in.

It's fine with me if he's underplayed, probably my favorite mid laner because of how adaptable and strong he is.
