@Meddler - Azir mini-rework?

Divewing··8 votes·52,584 views

A while ago when discussing Azir you mentioned your general thoughts on him, and that a power-shift, likely from his Q to his W, would likely be/could be the next move, but probably wouldn't be ready for the next patch (either 6.24 or 7.1 i think?) and said it could be ready later (7.2/3?)

Just wondering if this is still the case/things are on track.

Still planned at some point, we've got a few other mini-reworks that'll be first though. Guessing Rek'Sai will be the next, work's showing promise on her though is still a while off being finished. Focus of that update's on shifting her more towards diver and less tank (so more rewards for building AD, W likely shifting to single target knockup so less of her power's there etc).

Irelia full rework? :p

I think she'd be a great candidate for a 'champ in an ok spot who could be made really awesome' update. For a while at least though we'll still be focused on champs in pretty bad spots though (WW, Galio etc going forwards, Yorick, Sion, Poppy, Taric etc previously).

Who would you say is still remaining on the "needs rework badly" list? Somebody in riot, I think maybe Ghostcrawler, let slip that Urgot is next after Galio, so who else does that leaves? Just off the top of my head I'm guessing Nunu, Aatrox, and possibly Swain.

DwarvenGiant11 votes

Meddler is probably talking about full VGUs, which Aatrox is not a candidate for, as his visuals are perfectly fine and modern. Aatrox will be a better candidate for a Gameplay Update as a part of the eventual Roster Update or something like the recent "Mini Reworks" (like the ones Anivia, Alistar and Shyvana recently got).

I think that Reav3 said that, after Warwick's Update's release, Galio (who is being worked on), Urgot and Evelynn will be the only ones left of what Riot/ChampUP tends to call the "Tier 1" of champions that need an update- Those are ones that the years and patches did no good to them.

I'd personally say that Nunu, Mordekaiser, Mundo, Rammus, Swain, Malphite and Cho'Gath are ones that fit well into the "Tier 2" list and good candidates for full VGUs after they're done with the Tier 1 champions.

I am so happy to hear that Riot is going for 'champ in an ok spot who could be made really awesome' and this really cements the wavering thought of investing into this game was a correct choice.

For me one of the biggest gripes was that there was SO MANY clashing kits that simply felt out of date and very aged compared to the fangled and new champion kits. They suffered from a combination of not being held to the similar standards of "fair" gameplay, bad models and outright low impact kits compared to others thus making the a "bad version of X" (EX: Sona pre rework was often said to be "Bad Nami " due to offering the exact same tools ).

Hearing that you guys are going to be working through and giving some love to these champions paints a huge smile across my face. And I await with baited breath to see what comes next! (fingers crossed forJayce Malphite MasterYi Azir Kalista Jinx Vayne personally!).

As a side not. Would these sort of updates lessen or hurt a champions chance for a visual update as well?

for Instance I personally think Pantheon kit is a perfect choice for this kind of update but he is also in pretty dire need of a model update. Would a update like this delay his model update possibly or is that something not regulated by the balance team?

'champ in an ok spot who could be made really awesome' describes half the champs on the roster.

Jax full rework?

Tulsi Gabbard1 votes

Why not? Every single champ that's new has all sorts of mobility/multiple passives. A lot of older champs got tweaks/QoL buffs that made them feel much better. Jax feels awful to play in this season, and I think a buff to his AA range to at least 150 or 175 would ameliorate many of his issues the NUMBER ONE being cancelling auto attacks. I have played Jax for four years and he doesn't feel worse. His outdated kit just doesn't allow him to deal with the reworks/updated champs. He gets blown up so easily in teamfights and isn't even that strong of a duelist. As a Jax main I feel ignored and unwanted.

Will more of these mini-reworks or ability updates be detailed in the upcoming ChampUp blog post? I'm still eagerly awaiting Aatrox, and I know that Aurelion Sol, Kalista, and so on have been mentioned for this scope of work as well, and I'm sure many of those players are excited too.

I don't want to mess with how the teams announce upcoming features, but I do still believe that semi-regular updates on progress are a very good thing for helping the community understand not only why something is happening, but also for potentially giving feedback earlier. Some of the past reworks (Shen for example) have not been as well received as something like Poppy or Sion, and simply opening the community up to feedback slightly earlier than PBE might mitigate some of this frustration in the future.

Anyway, thanks for all the work you guys/gals do at Riot, I know you work very hard and don't get praised for it enough. There are always things that people won't agree on, but at the end of the day you make the game that millions of people enjoy and you work hard to keep it that way, even when things have blowback or problems, and in my eyes that's a very noble thing.

These updates are being handled by the Live Gameplay team, given more of their focus than usual is on game health and balanceability (it's the sort of work either team could certainly do though). The upcoming Champ Up blog won't touch on them much or at all from memory.

Aurelion Sol, Kalista and Aatrox are all possible candidates someday for these sort of updates. Like Azir Kalista's likely to be one of the later ones, given the scope of work's large in part. If we do Aatrox as one of these it's also likely to be a smaller update, since we'd like to have Champ Up take a larger crack at him sometime too.

Void Valkon2 votes

Aurelion? Didnt know you guys think he already needs a rework since he isn't actually that old and hasnt been as meta-relevant as reksai for example. What exactly are you guys unhappy with on him?

TheOnlyJoe2 votes

Can't say exactly since i'm not a Rioter But i assume it'd be his skill ceiling. Aurelion Sol takes an insane amount of effort to make him work properly, leading pro's to abuse him while in SoloQ he sucks. He also feels really un-interactive and in general clunky (because his Q delay) and the fact all of his dps comes from his W

Can we please get a title change for her? The Void Burrower is uninspired, boring, and honestly devoid of any creativity. I've posted about champion titles before and have tried many times (unsuccessfully) on many platforms to get a Rioter's attention, usually Reav3. I'll throw the link in just in case.

If you plan to change Reksai's knock-up, please ensure that it doesn't affect her jungling. That AOE knock-up is really handy to have against Raptors.

RiotMeddler10 votes

She'll need a tuning pass to ensure she still jungles appropriately after her ability effects have been updated yeah. Increased Q damage (higher AD ratio) will likely offset at least some of power lost off AOE knockup removal. Also possible we go with something like knockup on primary target, brief knockaside on others, damage on all.

[deleted]

RiotMeddler6 votes

That would be the intent yeah. Would imagine she'll still have Vanguard elements, but less Vanguard/more Diver than at present.

Seıze1 votes

Could it be possible to tune the multi-target knock up towards being a "softer" form of CC? Perhaps just knocking up targets directly underneath Rek'sai, whereas champions on the outermost range are merely applied a very large slow?

Alzon3 votes

Aatrox Hey, that's my job!

Kinder2 votes

Would you ever be willing to tune her to also be viable as a top laner?

Any comment on other champs getting mini-reworks? I know a guy who happens to love Karma and would not mind a mini-rework :^)

Can you explain RIOT's choice for choosing RekSai?

She seems like a consistent bungler and in a healthy spot.

Frαg2 votes

dont rework rek she is ok as it is now she is a tanky jung ganking botlane with e and knock up to kill them blue smite can give movemement speed to reach the target but of course she doesnt need a rework still ok.Can easily reach back line dont need to rework her for ad she is op

Wobly1 votes

Is Ryze on your radar for a mini rework? He's got a sub-45% win rate in Plat+ despite being nearly pick or ban in LCS.

RiotMeddler4 votes

We don't think he needs an update, do think he needs some smaller mechanics changes though. We're currently testing having his W use a missile with a very fast travel time. Intent there is to reduce the extreme reliability it offers, allowing some brief re-positioning if you're really quick against it, while still letting it serve as a safety valve against really mobile champions. That's still a speculative change, so needs more investigation, shows some promise so far though.

CyberBalt2 votes

So if this were to go through, in lane, one could hide behind minions to stop him getting the root off, right? And is that an intended side effect?

Fairly certain he just means something along the lines of Ryze's e for example. Point and click but instead of being a instant, you get a split second to dash or blink before the spell actually hits you.

CyberBalt1 votes

Oh, okay. My bad.

RiotMeddler1 votes

Yep, still a targeted spell, just one with a bit more response time to it. Still likely highly reliable, just not quite as much so.

Valor Bot1 votes

So, if Ryze's W were changed in this way could it be dodged? Or would this only serve to slow down/delay the instantaneous nature of his W so to speak?

I remember there being a brief mention about Evelynn during the Assassin update about her getting some sort of rework in the future to push her away from being some weird diver, assassin, no-identity thing. Is she still a pretty big priority, or has she been pushed back?

RiotMeddler3 votes

Evelynn's gradually creeping up the priority list as we address the worst offenders (Yorick, WW, Galio etc).

shyie1 votes

Is it possible Anivia getting a small rework? Kogmaw isn't seeing much play after the revert to pre marksmen patch.

Ganks For 5 CS1 votes

@Meddler hi there! As a Yorick player are you able to give any insight into what buffs you are planning for him?

Xyltin1 votes

Would windwall block it?

Tract2 votes

Please try to keep him as similar as possible :( I would die of sadness if he gets hideously mutated and loses things like shuffle, his mechanics and range, ect :c

Just making his Q mostly reposition and re distributing damage to W would be a small but effective change. Then his poke wouldn't be at risk of being oppressive and his more unique strengths would be emphasized :D

Could we decide how long the tunnel is?

reksai was the first jgler to make me think jg was actually fun. reksai right now i believe is still ok because she still can build ad with frevor nicely but changing the knockup to single target could change alot bcuz 1v2 would be much harder and reksais not underpowered or overpowered right now

Tazimuss2 votes

I just want to comment on Rek'sai : the rework no one asked for. Why, instead of bashing your own idea of a champ into our heads, don't you just accept that Rek'sai is a good tank? You made a good tank. No one that plays her think she needs a rework, they enjoy her kit and have adapted to the nerfs over her lifetime. Speaking of nerfs, you nerfed her because she was a super powerful AD diver, and now you're talking about reworking her to be a super powerful AD diver. Do you really, honestly, not see the problem there?

You already tried to have her be an AD diver, it didn't work, now she's a great tank, contested pick but not OP, and you're going to go back to the drawing board to try that failed idea again?

Leave her as is, and take all your cool ideas for a super powerful AD diver and apply them to a new champion (cough, Camile, cough)....wait, DON'T do that, and instead try making a balanced champion next.

The point of this is that years ago you accepted what your community did with your champions. Things like Annie support, AP Ezreal mid, or other "off meta" or "off role" picks are great, you don't need to sit there and go "BUT WE WANTED ANNIE TO BE MID!" or "BUT WE WANTED REK'SAI TO BE AN AD DIVER!".

Instead, embrace how your community was able to adapt to your constant nerfs and meta balancing/updating and created a happy role for their favorite champion.
