Hey Supports, a helpful tip

HateDaddy··120 votes·5,704 views

You're getting bitched at about not warding, aren't you? Lemme help you with that. Something most people don't understand is if your team is behind, warding is actually dangerous as fuck post lane phase because the enemy has map control and likely has neutral sites warded, making picks really easy. Typically these are picks by 1-2 champions, not entire teams. And while you can generally gauge if an area is safe to ward by enemies you see on the map, it only takes that Syndra waiting in a bush with 3 kills one combo to blow you up.

So yknow what? Refuse to ward unless someone goes with you (preferably your beefiest ally). You'll probably get bitched at for not warding but when you're behind and at a tower disadvantage, one of the things that continues a snowball is an enemy picking off a support trying to ward. And this is usually only 1-2 champions because they're ahead and can get away with it.

You can't make other people ward but if they want vision, everyone needs to understand that controlling vision needs to become a team game. A support that's behind doesn't have the luxury of controlling vision themselves.

So did you hear that everyone? Not just supports because often times supports do understand this. But when you are behind and at a tower disadvantage and you've lost map control, warding needs to become a team game. Otherwise non tanky wandering players attempting to ward will just get picked constantly in river and continue the snowball.

Also, junglers: this shít is a free winitem 1409 (of any upgrade, not just cinderhulk). It's also the best smite upgrade by far when your team is behind.

See, when I'm behind as fuck when I play bot lane, I don't ward the river. The only bushes I am willing to go near is the tribush (pink it, 'cuz it is still dangerous) and the bush near krugs.

YEP! You can ward it from over the wall (Top side only) but other than that you shouldn't any pushed out anywhere near river if you're behind so there isn't a point in warding that. Rather, ward your side jungle near you so you can see if a dive is coming.

It would also help if the ADC doesnt decide to facecheck with item 3340 and actually upgrades to item 3363 so they dont have to walk into AA range to see everything.

late game i actually prefer item 3340 , because you get more charges. So long as i dont put myself out of position to use them, it lets me get 2 wards off instead of one around baron and stuff. Though i agree that the range is pretty handy. I mostly play mid and its tedious to keep both bushes warded so i tend to keep item 3340 for most of the game and one pink for the trap bushes

theArtifacts1 votes

I only prefer item 3340 if I have taken summoner 12 since you can place wards strategically and TP to them. Can't do that with blues yet in low elo you always hear "WTF, Upgrade your wards!"

Yxgl222HaX1 votes

Nah man that's mid elo. Low elo is "WTF are wards". Every once in a while i play with my low silver/bronze friends and even the supports dont buy any where nearly as many pinks as would be considered normal in at least gold. And junglers? Trackers knife may as well not even exist when chilling smite is a thing.

SpecterVonBaren2 votes

I remember low elo being "If I buy wards then I won't have as much money to buy what I want".

Yxgl222HaX1 votes

To buy damages* there I fixed it for you

I'm still in the party that says we should bring back the greater stealth totem granted IMO it's OP as fuck. 3 minute wards on a 60 second cooldown is insane. It's basically 75 gold per minute plus added slot efficiency and no need to recall for it.

It's just wards from other sources are terrible if you are not a jungler. Farsight alteration is situation in seeing something faraway and not really used for long term vision. Current totem has too long of a cooldown early on and short duration. The totem needs to either scale harder or get an upgrade at a certain level.

I like how they try to encourage warding back in patch 5.22 but it ended nerfing wards.

(not disagreeing, an additional pointer) I often see teamates trying to make deep wards when we are behind. this is even worse. when we are behind we want to try to farm, simply having vision of our own jungle can sometimes be what we need most.

ThePartyLeader4 votes

I always laugh when we are stuck in base and people complain about no wards. Then I press tab to see that not a single ally switched to blue trinket.

BullGOD4 votes

sometimes i am behind and when i go a bit far to ward the jg comes at me and the adc+supp kill me and i get flame, ty so much for giving me this tip to ask for help when i go ward, tbh i have no idea of how i havent thought about this yet, u just changed my entire gameplay since i am main supp ^^ once again tysm

k wìx4 votes

Yep, as a Plat/Gold support main - one of my biggest complaints is how often i get yelled at for 'not warding' when i have 3-5 wards down on the map. Trying to get a ward down in a suspicious area has lost me so many games, **It's always better to wait until your sure. **

Furthermore, i love that you can now alt-click your warding trinket item to let people know how many charges are remaining, people stop talking real fast when that happens.

5 wards?!

Beldair1 votes

Sightstone plus yellows.

Gary B Enkelis1 votes

I thought yellows go towards the same limit shared by sightstone?

item 2043 sorta extends your limit by 1.

3 yellow wards and 1 pink ward per person, I thought?

Praetor Notorias4 votes

A Zz'rot will give you a 5th ward that sends little wardlings further down the lane. Just tossing that out there.

5 wards?!

was actually talking about item 3363

I do love when my team is pushed into all 3 inhibs, the enemy team has a 11-2 mid laner, and my team is cussing me out because baron isn't warded.

Timeless Izaya3 votes

OMG!! Thank you!! People would tell me to go ward, I ward, and get wrecked, and someone else wondering why I'm feeding. Bruh!! Ima stop warding during those times. You're right.

It's just hard to speak to people who are Gold and try and use their ranking as a means of showing how their answers are supposedly always superior. I bet if I tell my Gold friend this he's going to look up your ranking and see where you fit. No matter what he's going to find the ONE bad thing, and say "well he's not that good because -insert one bad thing-". He's lame like that. LoL!!

Very good tip, bruh!! You're great!!

I don't understand why you're midlane with 3-4 sightstone charges (probably no pinkward) and as an avid wardspammer, I never will. EDIT: Salty people who think this is ever a justifiable action downvotes, lol.

sometimes it's actually a good idea to ward the lane itself rather than jungle if behind. It's the place where players are most likely to group up, and knowing when they are at mid really helps with further warding trips.

DarkRitual2 votes

If it gets bad enough, I just swap to blue trinket myself, and load up on pink wards. Better to have some vision and worse vision denial than no vision at all.

Also, item 3711 is the best choice for any non-carry jungler, but everyone thinks they need to carry and but the others instead.

Rintam2 votes

This post has me thinking. I like playing hard scaling junglers, in this instance Kayle. Kayle has terrible early ganks, so she won't be ganking a lane without hard cc. Blue smite doesn't matter to her. Normally, I buy red smite, but by the time she can 1v1, she can 1v5 and teamfights are already happening. I think I may start buying Tracker's on her to help her reach her her late game. Seriously, I find her better in Solo Que than Kog'Maw, because she doesn't need a team to protect her.

TyrekGoldenspear2 votes

My solution is to play a tank support. Warding is super safe for me.

CarameI Frappe1 votes

Leona: Well i'll just ward this bush next to my tower, since they have a-

Vayne Malphite LeblancBlitzcrank Jax: Hello there.

Leona: OHSUGARHONEYICETEA!!!

But in all seriousness, while I agree with you- sometimes even being tanky doesn't save ya. I've been at tower, full HP with my ADC being full HP but all of a sudden MasterYi Alistar Ashe dives us and I can't do crap to save my ADC. So going to ward as tanky means you're less likely to die, but you can still likely die. Especially in this Season where everyone and their mom kills tanks like they're nothing.

Beldair2 votes

Braum and Tahm

The two uber Tanks of Support.

Braum shield saves him from most things and can buy him some time to jump to allied minion.

Tahm shield/grey health can save him from most sticky situations.

But your point is well made... Tanks aren't as beefy as they used to be.

Finn Teh Human2 votes

There's a magical ward called a farsight ward lol. Everyone needs to learn to use it.

Bloodhawk952 votes

I never really considered this tbh

Monkey D Luffy2 votes

but where to ward, such a big map... only 3 / 4 wards :/

RisenDarkKnight2 votes

Also, item 3364 is really helpful for safe warding, because it lets you know if the enemy has wards in the jungle so you can back off if you are spotted. If there are no wards you are probably safe to ward deeper in the jungle. It also lets you know if there is a enemy in a bush a short distance away, though that isn't much help against people with long range cc like Syndra.

i just wanna know why you only get 2 friggin wards with that green smite...thats bullshit.

Gelmous1 votes

yeah i don't know what elo you live at but it's been almost a year since i heard anyone complaining about vision let alone blame someone for it

bony whimsark1 votes

ok

Gelmous1 votes

your comment is as good as if it wasn't there

aLawfulFalafel1 votes

so what your saying is it's been almost a year since you've been on boards?

do you have in game chat off as well?

there is at least one person in virtually every game complaining about vision so i mean, theres like a 50-50 chance you see someone complain every game.... i dont get it, i dont get what youre trying to say?

Gary B Enkelis2 votes

I think he's saying the higher you climb the more understanding people are, but I dunno.

Being on the boards means I'm not playing which means I'm not climbing.

I dunno.

item 3711 Is the most gold efficient item a jungler can buy, and it honestly has no place as a tier 2 jg item. I would much rather see it as an enchantment (along with cinderhulk, runic echoes, etc) than as an item that takes the place of the smite upgrade. It makes 0 thematic sense.

the Anarchit3cht2 votes

if it was an enchantment no one would get it.

MonkeyMadness2 votes

Really? So if a jg enchantment built out of a sightstone you really think no one would buy it? Cuz according to some posts I've done in the past and on the pbe forums, most people I run into actually like this concept, or at least think that it's worth discussing.

Gary B Enkelis1 votes

You can attempt a risky trick, which is to ward in small steps. Ward a tiny bit out -> back to refresh wards -> ward a little further out. Yeah you can get jumped. Try to ward over walls.

Being accompanied does help, especially for long treks like to ward Baron.

Beldair2 votes

An interesting idea, the bread crumb ward strategy.

A nice one I would assume.

What Is Smite1 votes

As a jungler the best smite is actually: item 3715 because even minions aa's deal the true damage. item 3711 is for control Junglers or junglers who ward hop like Jax and LeeSin . Junglers should be buying pinks if they have enough gold, it's only 75gp and that is pretty much 1 scuttle crab kill, if the jungler is not an assassin then they should be using their totem as much as possible before swapping out to oracle lens or sweeper. Jungling I average about 13-15 wards placed per game from my totem and about 1-3 pinks depending if the enemy finds them or not.

You're not wrong but challenging smite does nothing for you when you're behind. In general I think many dueling/skirmishing junglers probably want challenging smite but if you're behind or a control jungler, item 3711 is best imo

What Is Smite1 votes

I feel that item 3715 is really champ dependent for who uses it since you either need: 1) High Burst DPS or 2) innate Arm Shred for steady dps champs

Garlic Butter2 votes

What... Challenging smite is REALLY strong when you are behind, the 20% reduced damage taken is extremely strong and lets you overcome an around 3900gold lead on you vs who you are fighting (assuming you are a damage dealing jungler anyway), and even stronger vs certain junglers (eve, shaco, any melee or burst jungler, and vs champions like fed vayne, etc), like the below poster mentions though it is somewhat dependent on what champion you are playing (not great on say, amumu, or fiddlesticks (who's drain tanking doesn't need it when behind)

Challenging smite + sightstone and sweeping lens will help you far more when behind than item 3711 especially as a control jungler, especially if the enemy jungler did not get challenging smite (and neutral instead of a disadvantage if they did).
