You don't actually care about stat checks. You just hate when fighters do it.

isn't it funny how the phrase never comes up in discussion for the myriad of mages, supports, tanks, assassins, and marksmen who it would be perfectly applicable to, but no matter how conditional a fighter's power-up may be, you'll gladly bend the definition of "stat check" to squeeze them in.

As far as stat checking goes, outside of the fighters who have 0 downtime or condition to their stat sticks Trundle Tryndamere DrMundo, fighters are arguably one of the more reasonable stat checks when they're balanced because they tend to have more specific conditions to their stats as well as shorter windows to act with them than ranged carries and enchanters -- both in the sense that their durations tend to be shorter and/or that they are melee and thus have a very small range to actually make use of said stats.

To clarify, there is no actual issue with stat checking or stat sticks as a concept. They are a necessary design for a multitude of reasons and the hatred against them is arbitrary and misguided. There are certainly stat sticks that are poorly implemented, and those do warrant change, but a stat check, on its own, is not offensive or "unfair."

I wasn't okay when Akali stat checked me I'm not okay when Kai'sa stat checks me

The reason I don't care about tryndamere is that because he's easy to kite especially if you bait his W. Mundo is unkiteable at least in 1v1

Tryndamere's early laning phase is just about the dumbest stat check in the game. He'll spin in and hope he crits you in the first few autos. If he gets that early crit he can chase you down and win the trade, if he doesn't you'll kick his face in and he can't risk it anymore.

His early trading patterns are pretty much a diceroll and that's really really dumb.

And if the dice roll in your favour and you force him out then teleport back in with ninja tabi he's fucked. If they roll his way and he can complete his tiamat before you get tabi you're fucked.

yea but I don't play toplane, I can imagine that his RNG is bullshit

I'm just talking as a lucian/ashe main that fights tryndamere after laning phase (whenever It's up to me to stop his splitpushing)

Everyone refers to ADCs as a stat check. Idk where you got that notion.

No they don't.

No they don't.

Yeah they do. Literally everytime someone is raging about ADCs they are called stat checks. ._.

Riot's stated before that Crit exists to break up the Stat Check nature of ADCs. Yeah, they're totally stat checkers too.

We aren't arguing what they are.

because thats exactly what they are.

bare some exceptions, they stack as much ad, as and crit as possible and how much they stack defines how useful they are to their team. theyre defined by stat check.

To be honest, I think people need to realize that a healthy moba is built on what we would refer to as "stat check" champions. They force a more macro based play where teams have to find ways around letting champions hit their power spikes. Season 2 was full of "stat check" champions and it was one of the best seasons. One of the biggest mistakes riot has made was trying to move away from the core fundamental dota type champions.

People refer to fighters/Juggies as stat checks for a couple reasons. One, high base stats and base damage. This is kinda where the stat stick thing comes in. Two, a pretty simplistic kit. A champion like Garen is a lot more likely to be called a statcheck over a fighter like Irelia who is more likely to be called overloaded. A combination of these make them feel like their number is just bigger than yours sometimes

I'm not saying it's wrong to call them that but to imply or say it's a bad thing is foolish, especially when you use the term like it's inherently bad.

There needs to be champions who are reliable like this to set the risk/reward for the rest of the game as well as keeping 'outplay' focused champion like Yasuo and Irelia in line

Stat checks are unhealthy in that if the champ wins the stat check, there's nothing you can do about it. On the other hand, if they lose the check they're useless as anything other than a punching bag. It creates binary, and unhealthy, gameplay.

Take Garen for example. He has: No skill shots. No ranged combat. No CC beyond his silence. Worst of all he barely any decision making other than when to time his CC/damage reduction skill. Either he can fight you, possibly even outright kill you, or he can't.

spoken like someone who doesnt play garen.

his kit is loaded with micromechanics that when managed properly can make or break fights. the slow cleanse on his q, the parry on his w, the isolation damage on his spin. heck, even the way his ult scales with enemy missing health makes it difficult to exactly gage the execute threshold. ive seen high ranked players (im talking challenger here) pick up garen for the first time, and repeatedly let their enemy get away with a sliver of health, or ult way too early or too late and waste most of its damage potential.

he doesnt have a high skill cap to the level of the new akali, yasuo, or irelia, but its higher than people tend to give him credit for.

Those are all one sided stat checks that the enemy can't do anything about. There's a reason people call certain abilities "skill" shots. Because they take a certain level of skill to actually land. You can dodge and hide from Thresh/Ezreal Q. You can't dodge Garen's Q or his R. Other than dodging the opponent's pointer ofc lel.

An eample of a bad stat check is Garen vs Trundle in a slap fight to the death. There are small things they can do, but for the most part 90% of their kit just...happens.

Post rework Xin vs Illaoi is an example of good kits in action. Xin can sidestep her tentacle slams and her spirit grab, and Illaoi and dodge his W and stay inside his ult or choose to kite it.

"Those are all one sided stat checks that the enemy can't do anything about." Yeah that includes auto-attacks of all kinds; ranged, melee, empowered, resets.

Which is why Vayne can be immenly oppressive in top lane when her opponent can't close on her. Her E has a small amount of skill involved in terms of positioning, but it's still a point and click.

Quinn has similar self-peel that makes her frustrating against some melee champions, and agree vayne is worse to play against between the two.

Yep. Which is why Quinn gets slapped with the nerf bat when she starts to look even a little out of line in top lane.
