Honestly how the frick do you lane against Illaoi?

Every time I see this champ picked against me in top lane I feel like my actual soul is being sucked through my godamn monitor. At the very least all of the fun for the entire match is certainly drained right out.. and I'm not here asking how to 'counterpick' against her, I'm talking about those many times where I'm not last pick and what to do against her.

And any of the times where I'm not teemo or quinn I have no freaking clue how you're supposed to even survive her, let alone lane against her. Maybe I'm bad, but I usually do pretty damn well vs other top laners.. and for the life of me I can't understand how she's even allowed to be a champ..

She's basically a free lane win just by existing right? You're not supposed to go near her, get q'd, get e'd, you can't out trade her unless you're very specific champs, she can't be ganked bc then it's just a free double or even triple.. So she wins lane for free, and stops you from getting dozens of cs by zoning and that's ok? She basically has infinite amounts of mana somehow, and even when she runs out and her bar is nonexistant, she still somehow has enough to ult or q??

You can't sit under turret and wait for waves to be pushed either, because #1 she'll just freeze and you can't do anything about that and #2 when the wave finally does come after you've lost a massive amount of cs, she'll just q and e you under turret so you can't even farm under turret?

How in gods fucking name do you deal with/lane against this champ??

Kill her tentacles before trades. Aka don't attempt to trade near tentacles

The most important part to fighting her is When she trys to land the test of spirit.

Does it hit and take your soul. Disengage to well behind your tower if need be. Kill the tentacles as they spawn. If they are targetable.

Or

Does she miss landing test of spirit. If she Does miss that is your window to Trade or All in.

Back when I used to play Soraka top (or rather when it was viable - s5-first half of s7), Illaoi was one of the easiest matchups I could get. I suppose that this will be fairly easy to other ranged champs such as Kennen, Vladimir, Jayce, Teemo. Just clear the tentacles and dodge, if you don't dodge the soul attack then unless she hit 6 already all in her. If she is 6 just waveclear and ping jungler not to come as she excels in 2vs1 but she sucks at roaming and I had no problem with her tower diving either.

Don't trade with her or atempt to kill her when she ults. Just walk away, she is very immobile because all she has is small leap and slow . It's good to bait her ult out if you want to kill her. Ignite cuts off big chunk of her healing so it's good to save it once you know you have enough dmg to kill her. l would suggest to chain cc her so she cant heal off on both of you when she ults or tentacle smash you. Bait out her test of spirit since it's really easy to dodge and staying behind minions will help you out. Most illaoi will try to AA and leap with w for guaranteed test of spirit so try to keep it in mind and use it to your advantage. Building armor will help you to reduce her dmg since she is mostly physical dmg. Illaoi doesn't have enough dmg to burst down your spirit early up to lvl 3 so don't run away you can easily take the punishment also don't let her hit you and your spirit for stacked dmg with q or w. Kill off the tentacles and remember that champs stacking dmg or hp are very beneficial from this lane like nasus or sion, free stacks off tentacles. Dmg like poison ( singed) or ornn flame reduces the duration of test of spirit significantly since every dmg per second counts and decreses it's duration significantly. So again if she missed her e or q it's time to trade. I think it's all the same since I came back to lol not long time ago. I wish you luck on the rift!

Coming from an Illaoi one-trick; if she misses her E, you can nearly always all-in her unless you have fed her to high Hell or you're already seriously low on HP.

Let's say you are Darius and Illaoi misses her E in the middle of the lane. What is she going to do? She gets most of her fighting damage from her E and the the extra tentacle from her E when her ult is active. With her E down, even if she ults, she's doing a fraction of the damage she would have if she hit her E on you. So walk up, pull her, and all-in.

Illaoi is gimmicky. Unless she is insanely fed, if she misses E and she is not close to her tower, the right choice for her is to Flash away from her opponent most of the time because she becomes extremely weak with that ability down.

and whatever you do, don't clump on your jungle and gang up on her when she has her E and her ult up. She will probably kill both of you. That's three free tentacles, in addition to what tentacles may already be on the terrain around her. If your jungler is trying to gank and gets soul pulled, spam ping danger and disengage. If your jungler goes in anyway, just walk away because that player is about to int.

The thing is, as long as her enemy is melee, why should Illaoi not just keep her E until they get in close range so it becomes impossible to miss? Illaoi can poke with her Q. If your enemy laner is melee, just E him when he goes in for a trade and even if he then runs away immediately you can still slap the soul for further free damage on him....

  1. First item grievous wounds. The majority of Illaoi's laning strength comes from her ability to damage you while sustaining. If you buy the early thornmail item on tanks, she reduces her healing even if she's just attacking your soul (I think).

  2. Clear tentacles. She can't roam because she needs tentacles set up to do damage. Take that fact and use it against her! If you clear her tentacles, or manipulate the wave so it crashes and resets where she has no tentacles, you should be able to outtrade her.

  3. Buy early tier 2 boots. Ninja Tabi preferably. The armor is straightforward but the extra movement speed makes it impossible for her to suck your juicy little soul and much easier for you to avoid tentacles.

  4. Shove and roam. Because she's immobile, you can shove the lane into her tower and then roam into enemy jungle or even look for a gank mid/bit with TP and she has no power to follow.

  5. Fight only when she misses her tentacle. Standing behind minions is good. I believe most good Illaoi players max E so dodging that skill makes the rest of her kit extremely underwhelming
