Riot said that Protobelt is a bit on the weak side

Lady Hammerlock··34 votes·4,459 views

But to be honest it seemingly on the "weak" side is probably better then if it was Broken/middle ground

And it only seems weak because it doesn't really work with all champions,i mean you don't really want to buy protobelt as a long range mage like Lux Xerath ,etc because you wouldn't be using the damage portion of it often and it isn't a very good escape since its a dash the size of a vayne tumble

on the other hand some champions can use protobelt very well either for its damage or as an engage-ish tool i guess an example of those who may use it for damage Fizz Diana Nidalee Ahri Gragas ,etc and others who simply want it more for its dash Annie Sona Kennen Swain ,etc

i guess the word I'm looking for is "gimmick" to describe protobelt

Exactly the same situation as for Duskblade. Remember how everyone here were going mad about how "literally every AD champion would become Zed and it would ruin the game"?

To be fair the Koreans are now building duskblade on more and more champs making some of them stronger than normal.

Leetri3 votes

Yeah that is true, but it's still nowhere even remotely close to what the community said.

These are the same people who could build AD Anivia and make it work.

along with guinsoo it can be proken figthers and certain adcs, but with 100-150 gold cost it would be a neat enough and balanced item

Yep, it is definitely a nice item. But they should buff that hextech glp thing. It is somehow weak compared to roa

GLP is fine tbh,it does nice damage,a nice slow and the catalyst passive is attached to it(can also be used for wave clear)

but it does seem very little people are actually buying it,but it isn't weak

Honestly, it feels too similar to a ROA at the moment. The main difference is that ROA gives the same stats but more of them even after one or two minutes, while GLP has a clunky active that's not necessarily there as an extra part of the bursty combo like protobelt is. The active also has a short cast time, which can really mess with the flow of your champion.

On top of that, if you're buying GLP for kiting, you might as well get a ROA + Protobelt, since an instant blink is a much better kiting method than a slow.

I think they intended GLP to add a tiny bit of utility to some mages that don't have any, but that's exactly what item 3116 is for, and it does a much better job since it's on all the time. In it's current state, it could be removed from the game and only a handful of champions would miss it, and most of them would just switch to something else to replace it.

Another thing that wasn't accounted for You can actually apply a slow with protobelt if you have a item 3116

I don't use GLP a lot myself, but I think it's a nice active to get a free slow without using any of your skills so that you can actually hit your skills if you're skill shot reliant, and then with a follow up of rylais would make it chain slows

Something along the line of playing like Cass or Karthus, use GLP follow up with your Qs while having rylais, now it's easy to constantly proc your Q or something like that.

GrReaper961 votes

If they lower/remove the cast animation time i would be happy. The ground that you gain with the slow it almost negligible with the cast time being so long.

SIayton1 votes

I think GLP is competitive with ROA, especially after the ROA price increase. The slow is ok but having basically an extra button in your rotation is pretty nice for a lot of mages and helps set up skill shots. I've had a lot of success with it on Sol.

Sightless667 votes

I think it kind of sucks. It gives less health and mana than RoA for 300 more gold, so that active has to be worth a lot. The problem is, it isn't. The slow is absolutely atrocious because it is a decaying slow that only lasts 0.5 seconds even though it has a normal cast time. The range is too short to make a pick, and the damage isn't even that good.

In almost all games, it is strictly inferior to RoA. The active is not good enough to compete with the raw stats and gold efficiency.

Darkslayer851 votes

GLP is really powerful. It gives great flat stats, and the active is useful for pinning people down.

MonkeyMadness2 votes

I think the issue is that mage item builds have been fairly static for so long that new items just don't have a place in anyone's build. At least not yet. Wait til these RoA nerfs settle in and a few more tweaks to the new items come along and you will be begging for Riot to remove glp and protobelt. Happens literally every time new content is released in this game.

item 3152 is in need of buffs, but not for the reason you might think. It is designed to be very slot inefficient, so that it synergizes with champions who need a spike in the mid game but fall off late (this is a good thing for its balance). Currently, the spike when you finish it isn't very noticeable unless you bought it to add damage. This is causing it to be skipped on the champions who would otherwise love the item. Protobelt will be balanced when it feels right to build on Annie Galio Mordekaiser.

40 second cooldown,300 unit dash,0.1 second delay after dash ends where you can't cast spells at all

it isn't "weak" it can just feel quite underwhelming on some champions

So can Bloodthirster. If, by your own admission, some champions use it better than others, why even bring up those who don't use it well?

Looking at lolking, Protobelt carries a winrate just under 60%. Goes up to 70% winrate on one champ though.

So on winrate, it's higher than most items.

Better downvote.

President Swa1n1 votes

There can be more reasons than an item simply being 'good' for a high win rate. For example, I bet if you look up Luden's Echo, it''ll have a high win rate because you generally buy it if you're already ahead.

Incognonymous3 votes

Is that a fucking joke? It's an extra spell cast + dash. You can literally go on Youtube this instance and watch Nightblue one-comboing people with it.

thats the bonus damage active. the distance and speed is completely irrelevant.

where riot specifically stated the items intended purpose would be the extra mobility to keep mages alive

And so what? The champions could innately 1 combo the champions to begin with,he's done it on Diana Rengar Nidalee all of which could 1 shot even without protobelt

and i noted how not every champion can use it to equal effectiveness

and extra noted info its a 300 unit dash(the size of a vayne tumble) on a 40 second cooldown and an extra fun fact you can't cast anything 0.1 seconds after the dash ends

"So what." The pinnacle of ignorant statements. He was using it on champs that already have inherent mobility i.e. the people it was not designed for but abuse it anyway.

Protobelt was a failure. In concept and execution. Only a filthy mage/mage assassin main would defend it.

To be fair, I'm a Diana main. Right now Protobelt is a core item for me, as the Abysal Scepters nerf during "mid season mage update" really hurt Diana a lot. http://champion.gg/champion/Diana/Middle Diana used to have ~52% win ratio before the mid season mage update. Now she's at 49.8%. Basically, she lost like 2% in her win ratio. This generally happens for champions after nerfs.

But if you notice, the "Diana builds" on champion.gg do not use protobelt. That's because people don't realize yet just how good that item is on her. Which is why her overall win ratio is lower than it should be.

My only "problem" with protobelt is the delay after usage where you can't use skills for like 0.5 seconds or so. Regardless, is a very good pick up, and even gives you some random mobility when running away. My core 2 items on Diana atm are item 3285 and item 3152. Both giving me the ability to chase targets or run away. Building the others such as Zhonias or Void Staff depending on situation. Also, I want to avoid building abysal on Diana as much as possible as that item became crap for an AP Assassin unless the enemy has someone like LeBlank.

Imo it was pretty obvious from looking at that item that it will fail it' purpose. If the dash was only a dash with no damage, it might have a chance to work, but protobelt haveing the highest damage active of all hextech items, and only haveing that damage if you dash into somebodys face means it't best usecase is as dfg-like burst item or to extend your reach rather than 'outplaying' your opponents. Also, the 0.1 sec delay only is relevant in high elos where players have the reaction times to flash when they see a annie dashing towards them. In my games, i can use it perfectly fine for increased engage range on the likes of alistar or annie. I like useing the item, but i don't think it's really healthy as it is...it's a dfg with a bit less damage but more utillity.

When you Ult in with Fiddlesticks and hes uses E for shit ton of bouncing dmg and oh wait theres more hers a ProtoBelt bam 479dmg . GG team fight.

That belt is not under powered but if you think it is by all means buff it i love the free extra burst dmg.

Kingnewgameplus1 votes

I like protobelt on lux. It gives me an excuse to buy the revolver part and make lane trading ridiculus. E passive proc+revolver is like 60% enemy hp, then I get a useful dash later on.

Doctor Jarvis4 votes

item 3030 wouldn't this be better? You rarely want to dash INTO the enemy as Lux, and the AoE slow+damage synergies with Lux's other abilities, and the stats are better.

ive seen a few nightblue3 videos where he took out 4/5s of a squishy champion's hp with a close range protobelt so i wouldnt say that the item is weak.

Uhhh a light breeze takes out 4/5s of a squishies hp in the current damage meta we are in in case you weren't aware.

I think protobelt is very strong on ap burst champions, likeFizz Veigar Ekko Diana LeblancAnnie , it is honestly super underrated, it is just not an item that eveyone uses.

Chatillon1 votes

Dude, an enemy blitz bought this the other day, and it threw me through a loop, he went full AP and was carrying their team

I just never predicted his proto-belt + Q combo, and he used it for the reach.

Interesting strat, it gibbed me several times, but the guy was a god on blitz tbh

Boxpencil1 votes

For the cheap price of nothing you get a free dash and another damage spell! (Its a joke pls)

SIayton1 votes

IMO nerf the damage and buff the mobility. I feel like they put too much of it's power budget into the rockets and not enough into the actual dash. It could due to go a bit further. It's legit worse than a vayne tumble.

Serpents Embrace1 votes

I've pretty much decided to core it on Ahri.

It's basically another ultimate charge, and the on-hit damage from Revolver is great in lane because you get a free attack off on charmed targets.

The damage isn't spectacular but it's nice on burst mages who run out of gas after their combo, it has a pretty short cooldown for an item, the build path isn't horrendous. Though admittedly having to get Kindlegem on some folks is probably the "worst" part about it...
