If you're someone who bans new champs in normals, may I ask why?

Electro522··9 votes·1,814 views

Just a question. I'm not here to flame anyone, I'd just like to see what goes through people's mind when they decide to ban a new champ.

Even if it's a dumb reason, I'm willing to hear it.

because its funny when salty people either dodge or get mad in all chat

Shortly after Warwick's release, I was placed in the jungle role and banned Warwick (since I'd already seen him for the past several games).

The enemy jungler immediately started raging in all-chat when the game loaded.

My top-laner helped me steal their red buff at level one while our bottom-lane and mid-lane forced her off of her blue buff. She raged and (unintentionally) fed for the remainder of the game, we had tilted her so badly.

It was hilarious.

This.

Just don't do that when someone like me's on your team if you don't like full AP, no ult Soraka/full AP Bard.

Scary Door2 votes

That's fine, you'll just get reported <3

chipndip11 votes

Like it does anything. You can't report someone for playing bad, or for building full AP. As long as I'm not maliciously saying "I'm inting this game", your report is as useful as pissing into the wind.

DeathBurst2 votes

If you ban champions just for the "fun" of getting people mad in chat, you'll be reported too, though.

Chembaron Yamada1 votes

Problem is, as long as you don't admit it in the chat, how is Riot going to detect that you just banned the champion for fun?

DeathBurst1 votes

The same way they detect that full AP Bard was trolling and not just building off meta?

Chembaron Yamada1 votes

And how shall they do that? If someone is banning for the fun of the rage in the lobby and doing nothing more in the game (no inting, no flaming, nothing like that), there is absolutely no way for Riot to know if that guy was trolling or not.

If there are further actions, sure, they can detect and punish it. But as long as you just ban for the lulz, there is nothing they can do.

Not defending people who are doing that, I hate it myself. Just pointing out that it isn't as easy to punish them.

DeathBurst1 votes

sigh

"Don't explain the joke", they say... Man, I was being sarcastic. My point is that Scary Door threat was meaningless, and to illustrate I just applied it to the opposite side of the discussion. Then you asked me how it would work, so I said "just like it would work for the first side (which is to say, it would not)".

All in all, if you ban champions just to annoy people (and people in your own bloody team, I might add), you're an ass. You may not be reliably punished by the system for it. But you should expect other people being an ass to you in return and not getting punished either.

Also, as a side note: I may be naive, but I hope that the text area in the report screen is actually used by the system. If someone does something bad in champ select and nothing more in-game, I write in the text area what happened exactly, and if that's a big enough trend, I hope it would start being punishable. Or if someone does something that isn't actually covered by the current checkboxes, I check a couple of them that vaguely apply and I give a more detailed description in the text box. So, if I'm not utterly alone in doing that, any behavior that isn't detectable by the automated system can be punished thanks to the text description if someone does it often enough.

Maybe I don't want to see the same champion for a 5th time that day.

Pater Gascoigne1 votes

This. I want at least a bit of variety. Seeing the same 2 champions in every game gets a bit tedious.

DeathBurst1 votes

That's a very valid reason :)

Provided you don't do it preemptively and you've really seen them 4 times before ;)

MrHaZeYo3 votes

Ya, I don't get it either. You should be wanting to learn to play as, against, or with new champions to learn what to do and not to do with them.

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

I can easily learn the basics through observation.

I'd rather watch how higher-tier players (i.e. streamers and content creators) play as/against them than deal with it myself.

MrHaZeYo2 votes

It's not the same though as playing as, with, or against one though. You'll have a idea but it won't be as good as the experience.

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

It provides a better base to build off of and it lets me avoid the experimental phases. It also lets the champion be tuned before I have to bother with them.

chipndip12 votes

That doesn't even make sense. What if they get buffed? Then you have a stronger iteration of them you have to deal with. You might as well learn them while everyone's on the same playing field.

Also, as a side note, what if those very pros and high elo players used your mentality? Then who are you going to watch?

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Then allies are less likely to feed playing an underpowered champion they don't know how to play.

They won't.

The hype surrounding new champions means that releasing gameplay videos of the champion will draw significant amount of views.

It is only practical for them to play the new champions from a business perspective.

If they don't play that lane it really isn't.

MrHaZeYo1 votes

No it doesn't, play as, with, or against would provide a way better base, most people learn from doing and experiencing over watching and listening. Doing both actually helps you learn even better. Watch the Pros play with and against them while also doing it yourself would be way better.

Because they're always overpowered. ALWAYS. Xayah is immune to assassins as soon as she hits 6.

Electro5223 votes

You must be an assassin player, I assume?

Sure, she's a decent pick against the likes of Zed and Fizz, champs who are very ult reliant, but for champs like Rengar or Leblanc who are not ult reliant, all they have to do is wait a couple seconds for a cooldown, while Xayah has to wait nearly 2 miutes for her immunity.

Except neither of them are overpowered and she isn't "immune to assassins"

She has 0 mobility, her ult is on a long cooldown, once she pops it she's incredibly vulnerable by herself. Just get her to use it defensively or if she does use it, steer clear of the feather landing zone and then go in. She has absolutely no way to get out of a fight besides flash and her ult and relies on her team to protect her if she doesn't have those.

Sintama1 votes

Oh, so she's completely on par with Jinx Ashe Draven MissFortune ? They don't have escapes.

Who is Taliyah1 votes

Yeah man I remember how overpowered Taliyah was with the 33% winrate

Cocho2 votes

I banned camille when she was new. I just didn't like playing against her. I guess ppl dont like playing vs Rakan Xayah .

I ban champs i dont like to play against.

Electro5223 votes

Thing is, I'm not seeing Rakan bans.....only Xayah bans.

Its weird.

Cocho2 votes

I guess of the 2, Xayah is disliked more or perceived to be stronger

PureSilvrr2 votes

Yeah, because people notice how they fucked up by standing in front of 9+ feathers and getting chunked more than they notice rakan dashing around and charming people.

EndlessSorcerer2 votes

I don't know the new champion's state of balance (OP, UP, bugged, etc).

The player picking them more-than-likely is new to the champion (potentially turning the game into a one-sided slaughter if it results in them feeding).

I don't trust my allies to know how to play as, with or against a new champion (since many players don't even bother reading patch notes).

I dislike seeing one champion in every single game; if I need to ban that champion for the sake of variety, I will.

I can learn perfectly well from observation and I'd rather wait for a patch so that players have time to learn the champion, content creators have time to release gameplay videos and for the champion's strength to be adjusted based on their performance.

Personally, I prefer not being involved in the experimental process of new champions. I'll let them through when I know more about their kit, play-style, build path and match-ups.

Electro5221 votes

So, even if you personally are excited for a champs release, you won't even touch that champion for an entire patch?

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Honestly, the last champion releases I was particularly excited for were Zac's back in 2013 and Braum in 2014. Even then, I waited for a couple patches until I knew how they should be played before I bothered picking them up.

It helps avoid the initial rush of picks/bans and make an informed decision before purchasing them. It doesn't particularly matter now (since I own every champion except for new releases), but it was the intelligent decision when IP was limited.

I'm quite patient.

deadlychuck2 votes

I mean, the only reason my friends play normal draft is to ban target champions they don't want to play against.

Sick of a 40+% play rate lee sin, yasuo, new champion(s)? Go play in the gamemode which allows you to outright ban them from being played, but people will not report you for not being a mindless sheep and playing super try hard top tier meta picks like you see in ranked.

Chembaron Yamada1 votes

The same reason I ban any other champ in this game. If their kit is countering me hard, I will ban them.

For example: if I play Zac, I know I will have a horrible time if the enemy picks Poppy. So I ban her. If I play a champion that is easily kited, I probably should ban Xayah because her kiting is extremely strong.

Just because it's a "normal" doesn't mean the rules change or your strategy should be any different. An overwhelming majority of players have never and will never play ranked games, but they still want to win... so to answer your question as to why I'd ban a new champion:

  1. I want to win the game, therefore...

  2. If I have already played with or against the new champion I know how it typically goes: Summoner picks new champ on my team and feeds, frustrating as Hell, not interested in watching someone feed all game. Conversely Summoner on the other team picks the new champ and absolutely destroys one of my teammates, frustrating as Hell, not interested in being stuck in that situation. Therefore, I ban the champion.

  3. If you want to practice, use the Practice Tool, custom games, Co-op Vs AI, etc. If you have the basics down and want to try and win, then fine.

I don't usually ban them, but if I did, I'd ban Rakan he's super annoying. (The only time I'd ban Rakan is if the enemy banned my Xayah)

RogueWill1 votes

Usually because they are overtunned and as a result is annoying to play against them

SÌghtstone1 votes

Just because I know people want to play them. Yea ikr pointless

LadyRenly1 votes

People get gratification over banning something that someone is likely to play.

Truly Prideful1 votes

The only new champion I've bothered to ban is Camille and that was after seeing her completely destroy like 3-4 games in a row. Usually I'd rather play against the new releases.

Friendly Ram1 votes

i normally ban champs with new skins so i don't need to deal with all the tryhards. I'll not ban new champs because i wanna try them too.

Fuh Queue1 votes

Personally I don't go into normal games with the mindset "meh it's just a normals I don't care if I lose".

I play normals to win and practice for ranked games whenever I have time. Usually when new champions come out, those players perform poorly and I don't enjoy those games. So I remove them from the game to avoid that experience.

TheBenchedKench1 votes

This is the reason why I ban new champions after release. 1 - People suck with new champions on-release and often feed. 2 - People have no idea how to build new champions. 3 - People have no idea what to max first or what to do and just end up winging it. 4 - People will pick stupid roles like Camille Support or Camille Mid, its okay when your team is okay with it and its for laughs but in solo queue it just makes everyone more tilted when you take the role they wanted and then do shitty with it because you wanted to play the new champion.
