Why did Veigar lose damage off of his ult?

Kanzaki Ranko··16 votes·999 views

I understand his E change. They said they wanted to tone down his reliability and not his damage.

But they did both.

Why? Simple question. Nothing in the patch notes says anything about why his ult was even touched.

Because he gets more AP than his previous kit.

In my experience, it was rare to go over 125 AP in a game, even a good one. With the new kit, I've gotten 225+ AP in most good games, and no doubt more. (Or if you like big numbers, it's rare to break 1,000 AP previously. Not unheard of to break 1,150 AP now.)

No, it only seems that way because Veigar can no longer play aggressively, he has no trade potential, so he uses it all to farm ap, like a farming veigar would do prior to the gutting. The amount of creeps per wave didn't suddenly increase, and minions aren't concerning themselves with setting up double kills for you, so what makes you think the ap yield is higher? Sure it makes killing caster minions easier, but when aimed at melees it most often can't one shit them and just unnecessarily cleaves a second target, making them die before the cd is up. Also, don't bother saying Veigar's autos are the saving grace for lining up double kills, because that't what puts him in easy harrass range for the enemy assassin/mage who actually has a kit that allows dueling.

Position and use your aas to set up double qs If you can't do that you should be using the pass through to poke. If you can't do that you need to go practice in a custom or against bots

I already addresses what happens when you play against enemy players with functioning brains, you brought up nothing meaningful and simply insulted me, pretty petty

I was reading and had to control myself because there are people sleeping...I'm childish.

Not every mid counters Veigar or has long range harass. I have used autos on several times even under threat of poke and I just simply move to avoid their skillshots. They are also mobile because Veigar's Q can hurt if you decide to use it for poke (and heaven forbid the jungler comes to gank mid, he's great at setting up a gank.)

You mean the" mini-rework" of 5.4? It was pretty obvious; it was to reign in the boost in the damage it would get from the Q and make it not so huge, so easily.

Because he now stacks AP better.

Because they buffed his E :^)

well even if i get all the downvotes ill just say it riot fucking hates Veigar they don't care if he was fine before they just want him gone same thing with Kassadin

He gets more AP from Q.

While that alone doesn't offset a 20% AP loss on his R. Remember the rest of his kit did not get this decrease. His base abilities are the same. So the AP is stronger in general while being slightly weaker on his R.

Why do people actually think this? Best case scenario you can take out 2 ranged minions at a time, but during laning phase you need to risk enemy harass in order to auto other minions down to secure double kills, and the fact that it can be body blocked means your chances of landing it on an enemy during a lane gank are practically 0. Veigars who played passively prior to the nerf were farming the same amount of ap with baleful, as well as having it as a reliable counter attack for trades, now its an ezreal q without the ability to reposition prior to use. Even late game it won't 1 shot melee minions, so it will then just cleave a second minion ensuring they die before the cd is up. the only real benefit it got was the increased cast range, forcing Veigar into a more passive playstyle than he already had.

I'll admit I don't actually play him much. But what little I do, i have noticed it is easier.

  • After enough ranks/AP I can go to either side's Razerbeaks and throw in a Q. It'll 1 shot two of them for easy AP and I can go back. I don't have to commit to anything. It takes a little more, but the same can be done on Wolves/Blue. Red as well but the minions are a bit more spread and you're already taking from your jungler. Don't be greedy.
  • Waveclearing is easier. Use your Dark Matter to lower the minion HP and follow up with Q to get the AP. Focus your AA's on whatever side you didn't hit(unless you hit both ranged and melee by grouping them/stunning). Can easily set yourself up to get 2 kills with your Q.
  • Since waveclearing and farming are both easier this makes his biggest weakpoint, his early game, less weak. While the change to his E did lower this, it's really not that bad. 0.5s is enough time to stun someone. Between reaction time and ping most people can't dodge it very well.
  • Having more range is nice. It allows helpful things. Like doing damage from further in a fight. Hitting two champions for more damage. Getting that guy who just barely got out of R range and is almost dead.

He gained more than he lost.

Most Veigar posts I see have people in it talking about getting more AP than they used to on average. It may be your playstyle or who you're picking him into that could be your problem.

And what he lost: -Reliability on his Q for trading mid lane -The ability to even land his W on enemy champions -A stun which his entire kit was centered around leading to the aforementioned inability to W enemy champions. -Cooldown Increase on baleful -20% of his own ap scaling on his R -Safety from lane bullies due to his unreliable abilities -Incidental cleave pushing his lane

What the changes did was made him unable to exist solo, he can't stun people unless they're stupid, and he can't land his meteor for the same reason. His Only trade ability in lane had its cd increased, which actually nerfed his ap income early game as well as making lane ganks more difficult as he has to reposition around an entire creep wave to land it. Using auto attacks to set up double kills in lane just invalidates the additional range on baleful, bringing you back into easy harass distance of the enemy.

As a person who has and still plays veigar a lot I noticed that these supposed "buffs" only help when dealing with braindead players, as his already easily countered kit just had a shit ton more counterplay added as well as making his lane more passive and dangerous than nasus's. The cons definitely outweigh the pros, thats why pro players will no longer even try to bring veigar into ranked.

They did the same thing to Zilean in the same patch. ^^

Because they gave him poke.

lB2kGRlc8y3 votes

Yea... but unlike Ezreal, he can't reposition before unleashing said poke, and has to some how shoot it past an entire creep wave. Maneuvering around said creep wave makes it easier for the enemy to land skill shots, so its not something that he does. When it was targeted, he could at least guarantee it would land, that's not the case anymore.

Veigar's ult is stupid enough with the 80% of enemy's AP clause attached to it, it doesn't need that extra 20% AP tagged along 250/375/500 base damage. The 100% AP scalings already competes with a full Malzahar ultimate or the center of a Ziggs ult against non-AP champions, and it can't really miss. Damage reduction and increased reliability on his W is what he needs, not more excess damage on a "Delete Squishy" button.

MAN OF INTELLECT2 votes

Only an enemy stupid enough to rush AP against a Veigar would get deleted in one shot. Any AD champion (Yasuo and Zed) rush hextech which nullifies ult damage.

Hexdrinker*

Hextech Gunblade and Revolver are AP items tyvm.

And I hope you realize that Veigar is best used as a counter-pick, not a first pick. Assassins in general, especially ones with mobility like Yasuo or Zed shit on champions like Veigar in general, who sit around as niche picks. Telling me Veigar is bad because Yasuo and Zed counter-pick him devalues your own argument, because they were good against Veigar already.

AP Mages will frequently lose to Veigar's, especially good ones. It's a losing lane match-up, they have to build AP since it is how they will scale their damage, so the best one can do is hope for ganks to gimp him as hard as possible before he drastically scales.

Once you hit late-game, the little rat is still going to ult one of your squishies and chunk the shit out of them.

MAN OF INTELLECT1 votes

IMO Veigar does not powerspike at lategame. ADC has GA or Banshees to avoid getting nuked, and veigar has to make it through tank line in order to nuke someone during teamfights.

1011001110001 votes

Veigar is all about the late game, what do you think the infinite AP-scaling champion is going to do best? Banshee's is useless against Veigar because he can just knock it out with a quick Q, and his Event Horizon is more than plenty to zone in the front line in a teamfight. He's literally just a rolling ball of damage with a great zoning tool.

Trídent6 votes

No, it's a common misconception. Veigar's strong point is MID game, not Late game. Late game he loses quite a bit of damage, due to item 3102, item 3157 and such. Only VERY VERY late game is where the stacking makes him all-powerful.

MAN OF INTELLECT1 votes

Don't pick Veigar until he gets buffed again. Unless you like him.

Check his diamond winrates. Not so good.

Riot doesn't see Veigar, he's too short after those nerfs.
