the biggest mistake that cost me games in my elo

SwiftKitten88··52 votes·2,466 views

even in silver my teams know how to teamfight, they know how to 1v1.. and MOST of them know how to ward.

but the biggest mistake i see my teammates make is to try to fight when they shouldn't.

they Overstay on pushes, they try to fight 3v5 instead of running back.

they run ahead an engage a what would have been a 5v5 as a 2v5 using their gap closer and leave half the team behind them with no way to catch up to help them.

but the biggest mistake i see are they force a teamfight when we are ahead but were are in a 4v5 with one player not with the team.

if BOTH teams are grouped. and you have a player NOT with the team. there is a REASON that player is not with the team. aka _maybe _ they are 3 minions away form lvl 11 or 16 MAYBE they are backing because they have 4.6k gold to spend

if a player is not with the team.. and its a 4v5.. DO NOT ENGAGE UNTIL THAT PLAYER COMES.

and do not EVER force a teamfight when THEY have elder dragon, defend and wait it out.

I see several issues in silver that I do not see in gold:

  1. Toxicity and hate during the game - everyone plays the blame game in silver games, it has lower prevalence in high gold
  2. No understanding of level differentials and power spikes
  3. Inability to farm under tower
  4. Everyone wants to group - no one understands split-pushing
  5. Inability to play from behind
  6. No idea when to take baron unless it is free
  7. Bot lane is a disaster for one team every game

Yes, sometimes I see this in my ranked games in Gold, but for the most part almost all the things listed I see in EVERY silver game. On my smurf when it was in silver, I couldn't help but note how toxic players were to each other. I am not saying that this does not occur in gold, but the blame game begins very early in silver games whereas in gold games it occurs less often and not as early. This may be correlated to silver players not understanding how to play from behind while most gold players do. So to a gold player a mistake at the 6 or 7 minute mark is not GG, but to a silver player the game may appear to be over. Usually the blame starts a bit later such as the 16 or 20 minute mark, if at all.

it is funny actually, when i was in bronze at the start of the season, I saw these issues less often. The main thing I saw in bronze was simply a lower level of general skill. (Less wards, missing skillshots, etc.)

What are the issues you see in bronze compared to silver?

I only played in Bronze briefly this season. After doing my placements, I placed in Bronze II or I, after getting into Gold V last season. I remember not doing great in my placement games, but I was really surprised regarding my placement. Even my smurf account placed in Silver III or II. I do have some bronze friends I play with sometimes (which is why I originally created the smurf)

The biggest differences I really see between silver and bronze is that bronze players really lack fundamental mechanics. Not all of them, but a lot of them stink at last hitting, they miss their skills or screw up their timing, they don't take towers, and they largely play the game like it is team deathmatch (always chase kills). A lot of players don't even know what most of the champions do.

Bronze players have low levels of coordination, but in Silver I did see teamwork.

I remember in one of my games in Bronze (I main Nasus) the entire opposing team one at a time (literally a line) walked up to fight me in the late game. While that does happen in Silver Elo, it was clear that the opposing team may not have understood what Nasus actually does as the game goes on.

I did find them less toxic than silver players, but they are still more toxic than the average gold player.

It could be that a large percentage of players recognize that they are not very good at the game. Their acceptance that "they are bad" probably puts some perspective on the game and how they should treat people while playing it? I am not sure. Most of my friends in Bronze are perfectly content just playing the game for fun.

I think Silver players are mechanically a lot better at fundamentals, but because they have greater knowledge regarding the game, they think they understand the game. They also have the attitude that teammates are holding them back most of the time. That pretense I didn't encounter in my games in Bronze or among Bronze players whereas I saw it A LOT in silver. None of my friends in Bronze have that attitude either.

I could be wrong, but anecdotally Bronze players are less toxic than silver players.

Less toxic can also be because probably a decent amount of players are probably fine with just staying in gold as the rewards for climbing higher isn't all that high except for ego and bragging rights

From memory its generally just more lack of skill and game knowledge. I think of bronze rank as inexperienced as they are still learning the game. I notice bronze players generally have low cs, chase kills a lot, miss a lot of skill shots, slow to push objectives, 5v5 ARAM style fight most of the game.

Well for me in plat it goes like this

  1. Blame game every game
  2. Knows power spikes decently
  3. Supports mess up CS under tower while trying to help (sometimes not all the time don't crucify me)
  4. If an ally is split pushing the team will not pressure at all
  5. If behind they say "open mid" or try to FF
  6. Try to take baron off every death (if we kill Janna that doesn't mean we can take it)
  7. Bot lane usually knows what they are doing
notice me Sin pi1 votes

gold tier players are probably the least toxic among all tiers, as they are prob mostly casual players who only want the season reward (or maybe not play frequently enough to prevent LP decay in plat+), and do not see a reason to take ranked as seriously as any other tiers

I am very familiar with silver as I spent over the last 2 seasons being stuck in silver. Finally this season I was able to reach gold quickly on my main, and also on two alternate (smurf) accounts. One of my accounts I use for playing dynamic queue with friends, who mostly are silver 4-5. Although we have had fun I feel like I hit a wall playing with them. I got so sick of my account being in silver that I finally started playing on it solo just so I could reach gold. I had to stop playing with those friends this weekend because they started making me super toxic. I have chilled out over the last year and stay calm on my two solo rank accounts. But they finally broke through my wall and started making me tilt with them. Its the damn blame game every game. Last week we went on a nice winning streak. So between my games with them and my games solo I was able to climb from silver 1 to gold 4 really quickly. But now the last few times I have played with them we have been losing and the blame games starts right away. It really tilts me for two reasons. 1. I main jungle and can't stand every lane losing. I am not good enough to carry alone and need at least one lane to go even. They just don't know how to play from behind and it drives me crazy. This leads to the second of point of 2. Giving up so easily. There were a couple games this past weekend we could easily have won but my friends gave up right away. It titled me so hard after the last one I just logged off league and have not played ranked with them since. I was so tilted I started shit talking teammates even playing solo when they would say something negative instead of just muting them :(. I even started being toxic in normal games when I was doing poorly :(.

Just going to take some time off playing dynamic queue and league in general. Took all season but finally hit my wall.

Some of my most frustrating games were the ones on my smurf when it was in silver. I accidentally got it to Gold just from winning a bit too much (it's in Gold IV promos I believe). But I didn't get frustrated from losing, I got frustrated because I grew accustomed to playing with significantly better players. The difference is highly noticeable in that players had a harder time playing from behind. Since I play Nasus it makes it so that when I spike we can begin to win teamfights or skirmishes that we would ordinarily lose but people didn't understand that unless I already had a lot of kills. A 0/0/2 Nasus with 400 stacks at 20 minutes is dangerous and can easily kill a 5/0/4 Lucian. People also didn't play for picks as often, and when behind that's one way to creep back into the game.

It never got to the point where I took out my anger on any of my teammates, but I would get tired of hearing lines like "you got caught out" when I was split-pushing with good vision and my team was farming jungle camps instead of applying any map pressure.

I had to adjust my attitude regarding my teammates and my smurf. I basically now use my smurf account to play dynamic with some friends or for a warm up game before I hope onto my main account. I largely play my main account only with a few friends in ranked at this point. I have simply had greater success playing it solo or with a couple of people that are around my skill. Once I stopped caring about my smurf and recognized that the players are worse (I think there is a huge gap between Gold V players and those that are Gold III or higher) I started to become less frustrated.

Dukues1 votes

I believe that. Just got frustrated playing with people who had less knowledge of the game than me. Not that my knowledge is close to great, but I started to understand map pressure, looking for picks when behind, covering lanes, that my lower silver friends do not do a lot of the time. Feel better now just needed a break.

It was kind of funny as I was playing with one of my buddies the other day. He decided he was going start jungling, which I was fine with as I was getting tired of it. My alternate account is gold 4 and he is silver 4 so teams ranks were a combination of players in the middle. He was happy since he was on like a 5 game winning streak as jungle. First game, team gets wrecked and at the end of the game team flames him. Second game I went top, which is my worst lane by far so I knew I was going to be at a disadvantage. We ended up losing that game as well and even though I only went like 4-7-10 or something and was rarely with the team, he still got flamed by everyone. Not sure why they were flaming him so much, but it felt kind of good for me to hear him get frustrated and realize jungling is not always as easy as it might seem, especially when lanes are losing. Never spam pinged him about ganks like him and my other friends do to me, but could tell after 2 games he was tired of jungling. He also mentioned how even in his solo wins where he was putting up a great k/d/a he still was not getting S ranks. I told him it was because his farm was too low and he needed to balance his farming out with ganking. He thought I was crazy, but that is one thing I learned this year regarding the game and jungling is that farming is important. Focused on that, started winning more, and also been getting more s ranks. Hopefully he learned a few things from those games, I know I did (that I am never playing top again).

In silver the jungler and support get blamed a lot games, especially when the main laners have no idea how to lane.

When I jungle in normals I almost never gank until 6, but I play Diana. People that are typically around my skill understand that, but people in lower Elo don't. They start losing lane and ping for ganks. Once they start doing that, I usually look at the situation and see that if they are crazy behind I leave them on their island. Helping bad players in lanes that are losing during laning phase does not really push advantages elsewhere. I will cover the lane if they die or ill walk near the lane to alleviate some pressure, but odds are the opponent could land a double kill if I approach pre-6.

I have good awareness for objectives when I jungle, but people are less appreciative of that if they aren't that good. I am not a good jungler in general with my routes and I can't carry games from that position and the champions i play on it, but I know what I am supposed to be doing. I just don't execute very well and I think the position is very gold hungry. I usually fill in blind pick and since support is my secondary, I usually get a support role. Every so often though I get something else.

Yep, people engaging on enemy who are 3 or more levels ahead of them just boggles my mind.

They screw up their own lane farm so badly that when they lose turret or brute-force taking enemy turret they'll migrate (usually bot lane to mid lane) and screw up THAT laner's farm instead of stopping the split push on their abandoned lane and getting their own effing farm!

Grouping only works if you ward properly (aka, not just the support, you all have trinkets, USE THEM!) and understand basic positioning (so Mr/Mrs ADC, how about stop running ahead of the tanks at every given opportunity or is that too difficult to understand?).

If I splitpush, that's because I have zero confidence in your ability to do anything so I would rather hope I can serve as a distraction and hope you barrel down mid lane like the lemmings you are to take turrets and and maybe an inhibitor. It's better than merely hoping you don't engage on the lowest priority targets in a bad teamfight even if their squishy carries are completely open and I die for no good reason.

I actually think Silver players can farm, but they have no understanding of wave management in laning or how to farm under tower if the wave crashes.

Wave management is really important in the top and bottom lanes. Because the wave could be stuck on one half of the lane and if the opponents decide to freeze you can miss a lot of CS or are highly susceptible to a gank.

After about 15-20 minutes farm is anybody's game. ADC typically has priority along with some champions that have stacking mechanics such as Nasus Veigar Sion Kindred etc.

If I TP to the bot lane and we kill the bot laners (or they leave) if the ADC pings me to get off the farm, then my guess is they are probably not that good of a player. I am shoving the wave to take the tower most of the time. I also TP'D so I am missing out on gold to help out another lane. Silver and Bronze players think farm in their lane is "theirs" no matter what, but the reality is that after a certain point it becomes a free-for-all with the ADC and some champions having higher priority. I almost never encounter any player in my ranked games pinging me off farm, but I do play Nasus so maybe it would occur more often in my elo if I didn't play him as often.

The biggest mistake I see is OVERSTAYING.

-> We'll win a teamfight, take a tower, then the enemy team will respawn. -> So the second we take the tower, I leave to push another lane, steal a buff, or take Dragon. -> And the rest of the team won't leave the inhibitor / next tower in lane and die when it's only at half health. -> "why didnt u stay u fucking piece of shit"

Every. Fucking. Time. You can't win a fight twice in a row. Someone's ult will be down, others will be at half health, etc etc. Just. Don't overstay.

Every. Fucking. Time. You can't win a fight twice in a row. Someone's ult will be down, others will be at half health, etc etc. Just. Don't overstay.

The thing is, this can work equally in low elo: Your team wins a teamfight where 2 or 3 enemies tried to run away and you had to chase down the kills.

Now the enemy team has 2 or 3 people spawn. Those guys desperately want to save their inhibitor tower when they should let the tower fall and wait to defend the inhibitor as 5. So they run out to defend the inhibitor turret and run in to a 3v5 thinking they'll win because we're injured. Then they're already falling / are low health, etc... as the last 2 or 3 spawn and those guys want to run to help them. So it DOES result in back to back teamfight wins, often the latter win resulting in a won game.

There's really a small elo range where the overstaying mistake happens and the "rush to defend without a full team" mistake doesn't. I'd place that elo around Silver 2 to Gold 5. Below Silver 2 (or even in silver 2) at least 2 players on the team are likely to be the type to try to rush to defend, resulting in overstaying being a game-winning strategy.

Basically, the point is that what wins in low elo doesn't win as you get higher. So you learn bad habits. These people complaining that you didn't stay are used to winning on these pushes. Perhaps it even would work that game - you're just assuming your opponents are smarter than that. Are they? Who knows. It's an awful system though, you learn bad habits to climb out of low elo, only for those same habits to be what gets you stuck in slightly-higher-but-still-low elo. Then there's something new that works in low-mid gold but won't work in high gold - low plat, etc...

This, they don't understand the value of just, after a fight, taking 1 or 2 tower, even maybe an inhib, back out and take a deep breath and control the lead by going to other objectives and pushing lanes that aren't preshuring the enemy team at the moment, no they'll either go all the way to nexus and die or go to baron without decent health/mana pool when the enemy team as already respawned... and die.

I've seen the overstaying in almost every game. Trying to communicate to leave is inviting toxicity. Trying to influence picks for better ranked games is a struggle since in s4/s5 everyone still tries meta/idgaf choices vs team comp. That really matters in the choice between staying, overstaying and leaving. If your adc/support combo is solid enough where your jg can go steal a red/blue and return to the fight this can turn a 40 minute game into a 20 minute ff. That's not saying a top/mid combo couldn't do the same thing. It comes down to low/mid silver being elohellgate to the higher ranks if only because teemo.

they Overstay on pushes, they try to fight 3v5 instead of running back.

happens in gold happens in plat i guess it happens in diamond as well and i've seen it plenty of time in lcs too

by this I mean, overstaying. Then they have to fight as they get caught.

Generally they don't engage, but they get engaged upon. What happened to my last game: my team composed of: me (nasus lol) - "unranked" coz played on eune, but ~mid plat elo dia 4 jungler, gold 4 support, plat 2 mid, plat 2 adc. So, overall, a decent plat elo team.

enemy: dia 5 (yasuo with bloodlust, this guy really dia5??), plat 2 jungler, dia 5 mid, gold 2 adc, dia 4 support So, overall a decent plat elo team.

During the game: team fought ~3 fights where they were 5v4 (I was 1 item Nasus and wanted to really get 2 items and a half). But anyway, I won top lane (jungler did help with 1 gank, he died for it, but he helped regardless and even tho he died for it, he also killed yasuo, so, ok-ish), took top tower, later took mid tower, later took bot tower. And then they fought a 5v4, and lost it, so I took more bot towers. Then the enemy went to do inferno drake and jungler was sad I didn't contest in 5v1 scenario and that I was farming hue. But now the enemy inhibitor is open.

I was on my way to split bot, but I see jungler ahead of me and starting to push the wave with his aoe. I'm like "ok, I'll just group with the rest of the team". Now, here's the thing that happened.

While Skarner (jungler) was split pushing (ofc with tp coz jungler) towards the open inhibitor. The enemy were grouped as 5 in the mid lane, just like us (tho, 4 of us). Now, the thing is. In order for Skarner to keep split pushing, we couldn't play "behind your turret", we had to play up front and keep vision on the enemy. So that, we can see them and in case they send 2 or more members to deal with Skarner, we can push. But, because we had to keep vision on the enemy (mainly us the front liners needed to play up front for this reason), it puts us in Leona engage range with ult.

So, in your mind it will be: "omg team, play safe, what noobs engaging in a 4v5". But there was no other choice. The moment Leona used her ult towards my carries. I have no choice but to fight back. If you would only look at the minimap all you would see is: a Nasus randomly walking inside 5 enemy team members (or 4, as Leona dashes forward the carry after ult). So "wtf Nasus why you engage 1v5???". But luckily, my team was smart enough to not fuck the opening I gave them.

When Leona used her ult to lock down my carries. I immediately engaged upon theirs. This made it so Leona's ultimate was essentially "negated" as the damage dealers in the enemy team had to deal with a big nasus raging towards them. I made ashe useless with just a EWQ combo (half hp down, and 50% attack speed down). Then they had to burn almost everything to kill me. But once they used all those skills to deal with me, those skills were on cooldown, so, my team was able to hard win said team fight even in a 4v5 scenario. While skarner took their base.

There are times when you got no choice but to fight back. There are times when you got to "overstay" like in our case, we had to step out of line and keep vision on the enemy. Otherwise 3 of them could've go to kill skarner and we wouldn't be able to do anything as the enemy were to far away to kill em, and we can't go objectives without jungler :(

You would "rarely" get teams that know how to play the game perfectly. So, don't expect that to happen every game. Be happy when it does, as its very rare.

lately I've been squaring off against a lot of golds and silvers as a 700 game bronze lord of the pits,

THE absolute biggest mistakes i notice from these silver and gold players in my games is that they are enormous cowards with no testicular fortitude

-they don't fight when they should -they don't commit to fights -they save flash in case they need to run away (only to die like a coward anyway) instead of a re-positioning tool -they're scared of ganking bot lane for whatever reason -they don't use their summoners all the time -Teleport is only used like 2-3x a game, they usually don't even use it to get back to lane.

most of these players just want to wait until the enemy makes huge errors instead of being the proactive force themselves, they'd rather passively wait to bleed out and die than project any semblance of trying to win.

Any time a player says 'play passively', it usually signifies the beginning of the end unless they have perfect cs.

A lot of these players just generally seem to think that they'll get strong in the late game and thus neglect the early and mid game entirely of any proactive objective control and pressure exertion. It's just completely ridiculous.

It's stupid things like what the OP describes that has had me not even tempted to log in for a while.

It's also why I don't watch LCS or high elo streams.

Why should I get my hopes up to play a competitive game when most games I get in have people who don't understand the most basic sense of self-preservative logic.

If I have enough gold to buy two or 3 full items from nothing, teammates in those games think "hey, let's start as many fights as we possibly can".

It's like they are flat-out ALLERGIC to farming minions or setting up wards to ensure a safe team fight area for when I get back.

As for running ahead or staying too long after winning a fight or taking an objective, yeah, I really hate that. The staying too long thing is usually more prominent in laning, though.

This is why I don't play ranked item 3070

The biggest mistake I see, even in high gold where I'm at (which isn't that great but whatever) is not knowing when to take particular objectives and when to fight over them. In general though the higher in tiers you get the quicker your team will get at just automatically moving towards the proper objective.

Also people seem to like picking strong 1v1 and duelist/laning champions though a lot of those champions aren't great in teamfighting so split pushing might be the best option if the enemy team has a lot stronger/better teamfighting champions And people can be rather bad at dealing with split pushing Though split pushing can be difficult (knowing when to push and when to hang back and the 4 or 3 man group are quite vulnerable and need to be very careful but also at the same time try and capitalize when and if multiple people try and stop the split pushers)
