Honest question; how do you beat a wombo comp?

So I've been playing League for about 4 years now, and to my knowledge I've never won a game playing against a wombo combo team, nor have I lost a game while playing on one. To this day I just see no way to play against it and win. A proper wombo combo team like say Malphite Orianna Kalista Zyra JarvanIV is essentially 100% guaranteed to win any 5v5 they enter unless they're tragically far behind.

So the obvious first answer is "don't fight them, just split and rotate." There are several issues with that though. If they see you splitting, they'll hunt down the other 4, 5v4 them and sweep. If you rotate as a 5 man, they also do, and you're either stuck base-racing for 10 minutes, or stuck with them following you around forever and rendering the game a stalemate. On top of that, due to the fact that you can't 5v5 them, they get every dragon and every baron free of charge because if you even think about fighting for it they ace you.

Answer number two is always "just split up so they cant hit all of you with all of their ults." Again, sounds nice, but doesn't work. See, with Champs like Malph and Ori, if their ult hits you you're probably dead. So you split up so Malph and Ori can't hit all 5 of you... and instead all 5 of them solo ults someone and that someone still dies. Ori's ult pops the adc, J4 solo dunks the APC, the poor support is being eaten alive by Zyra plants... splitting up just makes you die alone instead of together.

Another answer I've been given is poke/siege comps. But again, no dice. Considering the range J4 or Malph can engage from and bring the Ori ball with them, and with items like item 3800 and item 3069 even Xerath couldn't possibly stand far enough away. Not to mention most siege Champs are slow to make up for their range.

So at this point I'm genuinely asking for help from anyone who has solved this mystery. How do you beat something that annihilates 5 people simultaneously while also cc-ing them? Please help me overcome this foe so that I might suck less.

  1. Split pushing - removes at least one or more to defend a lane
  2. Map awareness / Vision - grant foresight to the groups movements
  3. Priority targeting - isolating targets like the support or adc should be taken out asap
  4. Communication - know what your team is doing
  5. Objective baiting - if they are doing baron, take out a tower, push in a lane, do dragon, they cant be everywhere at once.

But overall, if you have a team that just lacks basic teamwork and objective focus, the game is lost with or without a proper team comp.

This sums it up pretty well tbh, but them main thing to focus on is ensuring you have strong lanes and or counterpicks that also work well late game to split, Jax, camille, fiora, trynd Zed, talon, Vayne, The likes

Well to split push properly you use vision. If you have champions who are actually good at split pushing and back off when they see enemies are coming, the pressure starts to mount on them and eventually the mages have to wave clear. To avoid a disadvantaged 3v3 or anything like that, focus wave clear. Split pushers are generally good duelists and should demand the attention of multiple champions.

Here's the deal. People know how to coordinate a wombo combo team easily. When the default strategy is group and push, you can even accidentally make a wombo team. Two front line engage, two aoe mages and an adc can clean up most 5v5s. But a team of two split pushers/ two wave clearers and a support can ignore them. Generally a comp like Jax, kayle, anivia, Ziggs and Soraka would be frowned upon. As a dedicated split push team though, you can nullify the wombo team's advantages. I'm not a split push scientist though, so someone else could probably give a better team example.

Tldr; Split pushing against a wombo team will likely not work if you don't have a split push team.

Well some team comps are better to fight against them. Sometimes you want to look for a pick on their team because the combo's are so strong. Out rotating is good, but most people don't know how to. If you know their top doesn't have tp, but you do, force one of their teammates to have to clear top (or bot) and rotate back with your team asap.

have like fiora and tryndamere split pushing top and bot with like Anivia or Victor clearing mid waves. They can't 1 v 1 Fiora/Tryndamere so they can't effectively respond without giving up significant objectives.

Aditionally both Kalista and Malphite can have a difficult early game. Punish early and get ahead.

You still literally just split push. I had a One for all where it was MF vs Brand. My team is all "we'll just all go together and 5 man ult them all." Yeah, except I play a lot of Brand and a single Brand ult can decimate a team, let alone 5 that all stack the passives of each other. So, while my team kept trying to 4 man mid and lose, I was split pushing waves and taking towers while they died to the Brand ults. It was totally risky cause the minute one came at me I had to dodge literally everything if I didn't want to get 100-0 instantly. However, with enough lifesteal and well placed ultimates, I was able to handle them even when they sent 2 to try and stop me. Granted, my team still kept dying and eventually gave up our mid inhib which eventually lead to us losing the game cause they backdoored, but I got 2 inhibs during that time by simply setting up a pushing wave top lane and then walking with the bot wave to the enemy tower or vice versa.

That or you go the cheese strategy of you all buying ZZ'rot/Banner, picking a lane, dropping them, and then go push another lane so that if they Ace you while split, you still get a tower or two.

Okay, so what you first need to do is look at what this comp is good at. As you pointed out it has great engage and teamfight in general. The comp does also scale very well but has certain exploits early game.

Malphite for example has a weak early game presence, J4 does not have the greatest either. Ori is fine in terms of keeping her wave pushed, but her roaming is lackluster. Kalista has a great lategame but a rather shitty early/midgame, Zyra has a good game and provides useful peel later on.

So how do you deal with that - one possibility is an early game focused snowball comp. Take a strong toplaner that is able push Malphite and add a strong jungler aswell. Rumble/Graves would be very decent. In midlane take something that pushes hard and is able to take turrets so that you can snowball the lead of the top jungle pairing - Ziggs would be a decent choice. For botlane goes the same, Caitlyn Karma are able to abuse them so that you got 3 pushing lanes (equals tons of jungle pressure) so that your jungler can safely invade and 1v1 J4's butthole. After taking J4 and his whole jungle Graves is free to take drake/dive top or do whatever he wants with that exp/gold lead. Your pushing botlane gives you the possibility of a TP minion crash dive along with Ziggs ultimate and your fed jungler and ahead toplaner. Their Malphite will have to lose CS for TPing aswell. If you play your cards right you just got botlane turret, denied them several waves (you can get a crash dive going as you have full botlane control in this matchup) and a drake afterwards.

Then get your Cait/Karma toplane ASAP while taking your Rumble botlane. You win botlane, midlane, toplane and jungle at this point. With your comp you should have no trouble taking and controlling objectives.

Inb4 but that's way too specific and won't happen like that: no it's not. Their comp is way too cheesy and abusable - your comp is superior if you play equally well and you should snowball it very quickly.

Another option is building a disengage/waveclear comp with stuff like Viktor/Ziggs, Janna/Sivir, Nauti/Mao and Graves/Ivern jungle. But eh, the other option is much better.

Inb4 but it's soloQ and we picked a poke or complet random comp: yeah that's the cool thing about wombo combo comps. It's an actual comp that is very easy to build and that has some synergy which is already better than most soloQ comps. You got outdrafted so now you better have atleast some winning matchups so that you can snowball. Or try to get the splitpush/rotation going but it's kinda tough in soloQ.
