Who are some good mid lane mages?

Don't look up stats or ask people - you have to find your own niche. Don't bother what people try to tell you, because they'll all tell you the meta champions.

Just find a char whose look/style you enjoy - it's not season 1 anymore, there aren't really any troll-tier champions at this point, so it's hard to go wrong.

One thing that people might disagree, but playing annie 1st as your main is horrible. It hardly makes you learn about anything. Since she has only one thing to do. And she is way too predictable from the enemys standpoint, since all of her abilities make her stand still for a channel.

I say viktor is really good for his versatile kit, so you can control the lane to your advantage. Velkoz for his extreme kiting and tankbusting with range. And malzahar against teams with a large number of melees for extreme lockdown.

you can do well with any champion, and one that fits your play style is more important than just whatever champs are meta at the moment. I still like playing taliyah mid, her kit just clicked with me the first time I played her. Azir on the other hand, even when he was meta, I was absolutely horrible with him.
