What's the point of this?

Double Edged Sword: Deal 3% additional damage, take 1.5% additional damage.

Battle Trance: Gain up to 3% increased damage over 3 seconds when in combat with enemy champions.

Is there some trick I'm not getting? Why take Double Edged Sword when I can go for Battle Trance without the risk of taking additional damage?

Depends on the champion and situation. Some champions champions prefer not to wait three seconds before having their maximum damage.

Yeah exactly. Double-Edged Sword is good on like, poke champions for example (Jayce, because he loves poke over his DPS), or those with burst (Ahri for example).

Battle Trance is better on fighters/duelists/DPS champions (almost every single ADC, people like Fiora, Jax, Tryndamere, etc).

Something consistent over temporary. Depending on the champion, you can make that sacrifice without suffering too much for it.

Double edged applies to all damage (except true) at all times to all minions/monsters/large monsters

The difference between mages and assassins, and fighters and ADCs, really.

Burst vs DPS

because when your an assasin who's job to burst the back line in 0.5293954 umpteenth of a second you cant wait 3 seconds? Why take either when bounty hunter gives +5% dmg with no downside besides stacking it?

Assassins thrive in picking people off, not team fights.

Battle Trance only works on champions, and takes time to ramp up If you're a champion that wants to kill enemies quickly, and avoid extended fights, then battle trance is useless
