How to build Azir

Alright, so i see quite a few Azir's lately, and the builds i see them have always make me so sad due to wasted potential. SO, this is a little item set I decided to share that honestly maximizes your damage very early and turns you into an almost unstoppable lategame harass monster. Now before I get too into detail with the build, i want to explain something.

IN ORDER FOR THIS BUILD TO BE GOOD, YOU HAVE TO BE PROFICIENT WITH LAST HITTING EVEN WITH AZIR'S LOW AD the reason i say this, is because i see a lot of Azirs using their sand soldiers to farm. This is a terrible idea, as Azir eats mana like no one's business, and this build i have doesn't incorporate a mana item into it. Therefore last hitting with his basic attacks is a must so that you can refund your mana when you get low. Onto the build, then.

Please, I understand that i'm silver 2, but if you discredit the build i speak of just because I'm silver 2, then you need to learn to math

  1. Nashor's Tooth This item should be your #1 priority to build. It gives a cushy bonus to your AD to help your farm/regenerate your mana better, gives you a ton of attack speed via CDR and flat attack speed, and adds a huge amount of damage to your sand soldiers just because of the attack speed/cdr/ap

  2. Liandry's Torment This item is HUGELY important for Azir's damage, and should be built second. It gives you a fair amount of health so as to give you more time to react to damage and escape, 50 AP which adds onto your soldier's damage, magic pen which makes your soldiers ignore mr and deal even MORE damage, and has a very good passive that drain's 2% of the enemy champion's current health per second in magic damage. With the almost never ending harass you can put out with azir's soldiers, you basically have a permanent 2% DoT on your enemy laner. After you have this built, unless the enemy champion is extremely tanky, you're going to be attacking for about 250 damage from your sand soldiers excluding the dot. very very very very strong. get it.

  3. Berserker's Greaves Now, you might think I'm crazy for suggesting this over Sorc/CDR boots, but with my runes i have for azir currently, after i build my nashor's tooth I have 40% cdr. That means by levels 5-7(depending on if i get kills in lane quickly or not) I will have max CDR from ONE item. The reason i build berserker's greaves, is because that little bit of magic pen from boots is nowhere near as good as a 20% attack speed bonus(liandry's/void staff picks up the magic pen slack). By the time this is built, you're a mid-game monster who's chunking people out for close to 300 damage per hit with a 1.49 attack speed. you're going to melt all of the squishies at this point in 4-5 hits (your q/auto attacks)

  4. Rabadon's Deathcap THIS is where your damage skyrockets to such massive proportions, even the tankiest of tanks can't take more than a few hits from you without suffering the consequences. once you have this built, you're doing close to 400 damage per auto attack with your soldiers. maybe 290 against tanks(still a huge amount considering how fast you hit and how far away you are).

  5. Void Staff I usually don't get far enough into the game to ever have to build this, but it's a very very good item to have for Azir. like Teemo, Vel'koz, katarina etc, while high ap values aren't ever a bad thing, these champions tend to do much better with 500 AP and a boatload of magic penetration rather than 800 AP and very little magic pen. Even if no one is building magic resist against you, i still recommend it as it still ignores their existing magic resist causing you to basically ignore ALMOST ALL of their base magic resist.

  6. Zhonya's Hourglass VERY rarely have I ever played a game as Azir and ever had to build a zhonya's(as he is incredibly safe so there's no need to early unless you pull fizz or zed, and my games ususally don't last long enough for me to reach full build). But if you find yourself needing to build it, you can build it before Rabadon's. The 120 AP is just icing on the cake to melt the enemy team, while the 50 bonus armor helps slightly against any AD's they may have. The active is very useful if you're in a bind and your ult's almost up. just pop it, ult when you get out, w+q+e away and you have just escaped from just about anything barring global ults.

ONTO THE RUNES

9x Magic Penetration marks Azir is a late game champion. magic penetration is amazing for late game. Do it.

9x Scaling Health seals i honestly build this because ever since the nerf to armor seals, you get more benefit from 216 health at level 18 than 9 flat armor.

9x Flat CDR Glyphs This is very very VERY important, as CDR is a huge stat for azir(through his passive and just quick cooldowns on his q/w/e/r

2x Flat CDR 1x Scaling CDR Quintessences same as above, the one scaling cdr quintessence is so that once you get nashor's tooth you'll be at 40% cdr instead of around 38% cdr. i have OCD about these things. sue me.

that's my build. been testing it on ranked, and have gone 7 wins 3 losses as azir(2 of those losses were day one of azir launch when he was bugged as shit and i was still learning him) i hope this build helps anyone aspiring to play azir. GLHF you guys :)

I'd say:

Mana item --> Boots (SP) --> Heavy AP item --> Spellvamp book --> Spirit Visage --> Liandry.

That's my path most of the times. Azir in Lategame can make a good use of Spell Vamp, maybe you can change from it if the enemy team is heavily AD based.

Sometimes I take the Vamp book over a Zhonya's, but i don't see the point in sacrificing so much damage/ap over a 20% increase to 20% spell vamp(only 24% vamp) by building a spirit visage

The thing is that you geet HP MR and CDR too potentially maxing your AS bonus from it (If you don't build Athene and so 10% goes wasted). Azir can use 3 soldiers at once in lategame and even 4 if you time them well. This means lots of attacks and they proc Spell Vamp and do enough damage.

Azir needs to be a defensive mage because your gamechanging abilities require you to stand close to enemies. I've won so many trades with the knockup that even a small increase to it's shield is well spent money.

item 3174 item 3116 item 3089 item 3115 item 3135 item 3255 my runes 9x attkspd reds 9x attkspd yellows 9x flat ap blues 3x flat ap quints.

i dont use the cdr runes only cause cdr is too cheap to get in game and on azir attkspd yellows give more attkspd than the cdr yellows and i take the ap blues and quints for dmg you end up with 22%attkspd and 26 ap and hurt in lane hate it or love it it works for me

Very nice build, the added descriptions for your item and rune choices are nice too, though personally I build a bit differently still rushing item 3115 but then getting item 3158 item 3089 item 3151 item 3116 item 3135 .

If there's a DrMundo or Maokai on the enemy team I'll change my build to item 3115 item 3020 item 3165 item 3135 item 3151 item 3001, Since even if you ult them away , if they still have flash up they will get to you and your adc, and being able to shred them before they're able to disrupt long enough that your team loses the fight is extremely important.

The runes I go with are 4x attkspd reds, 5x mpen reds, 9x scaling hp yellows, 9x flat ap blues, 1x attkspd quint and 2x mpen quints.

The 2 Mpen quints make up for the loss of Mpen when using the 4 attkspd reds, actually giving .6 more Mpen than just having all Mpen reds and thanks to the items I go with I can use the flat ap blues since my CDR would be capped at my 2-3 item and the extra 11% attkspd at lvl 1 helps with getting off soldier dps until I go back and get my item 3108 item 3101.

Sadly out of the 2 ranked games I've played with him so far (not really into ranked this season), both were losses, but meh, learning through failure and stuff is always good, and I do plan on being an Azir main once I actually get better with him since the carry potential is extremely good.
