Gnar has a better laning phase due to range.
He has a form to be a tanky melee with lots of damage and cc.
Gnar isnt useless if behind due to his amazing CC.
Gnar has mobility and engage.
Gnar outscales Darius not in damage but in tankiness, CC, and a front liner.

Realistically, Gnar is "better" as far as late game goes, but I personally enjoy Darius more. Darius handles almost any laner with relative ease, whereas Gnar is vulnerable to anyone who can either negate his jump or gap close on him quickly. Gnar also has some complexity in terms of his rage bar, management, and getting off decent ults against non-braindead teams.

Tychusfindlay9191 votesGnar actually has a mediocre laning phase after his recent nerfs. He has one of the shortest ranges for all ranged top laners early on.
His melee form is actually a point of weakness against certain champions, like darius.
He doesnt outscale darius's tank because he only becomes really tanky in mega form, and his current meta build forces him to go cleaver mallet which has very little in terms of resistances. Darius has incredible base stats and can do damage with just cleaver alone, leaving room for a sixth dedicated tank item. He also has innate sustain which gnar doesnt have.
Gnar outscales him in terms of cc, thats without a doubt.
