Why are turrets immune to spells?

I dont understand how Caitlyn and Graves bullets damage towers but Gangplank cant.

I understand if the tower was made from magic resistant material, but how does it avoid damage from physical spells?

Techincally buildings are vulnerable to fire Annie Brand ; However it makes sense that the towers cant be drained by Vladimir orFiddlesticks .

Is there a lore reason for magic immune structures? Or just gameplay balance.

Imagine if Ziggs could damage turrets with spells.

And I think it's just for balance.

It's 100% a balance choice. If spells could damage them siege mages would just hammer them down from 1000+ range.

Gameplay balance. AA's damage is controlled by AD and attack speed. With spells there are too many variables (how spammy is the spell? What is the base damage? What is the scaling?) to worry about when trying to determine how strong the tower's MR should be so that is somewhat fair to everyone in a class.

There is also issues with range. Many champions have spells with long enough range where they could safely poke away at the tower out of its range.

Spells can have a lot bigger range than a turret. While auto attacks can't unless modified by a spell (Twitch R). Spells being able to affect turrets would be simply unfair.
