"Mages way to dominant mid" meanwhile I play against assassins literally fucking 80% of my games.

I dont give a flying fuck if assassins dont get picked in LCS, they are literally EVERYWHERE in soloq.

Edit- Highlighting Teridax68's post for relevance.

Teridax68 (NA) - To add some stats to what the OP is saying, using op.gg:

Fizz has a 51.65% win rate and a 7.45% play rate. He therefore has good presence mid and good success as well. Zed has a 50.63% win rate and a 10.35% play rate. He therefore has a very large presence mid, along with good success there. LeBlanc has a 46.78% win rate and a 15.67% play rate. Her win rate isn't amazing, but she is literally the most popular mid laner in the game. Katarina has a 52.4% win rate and a 4.78% play rate. She's not as popular as the others (though still not bad by any means), but is among the more successful mid lane champions. Kassadin has a 49.17% win rate and a 8.74% play rate. He therefore has good presence mid, as well as reasonably good success. Yasuo has a 50.19% win rate and a 11.18% play rate. He therefore has a very large presence mid, as well as good success. So effectively, outside of pro play, assassins are already both highly present and successful in mid lane. Assassins are among the top-performing mid lane champions, with 5 out of the top 10 mid laners, and 2 out of the top 4, being assassins. The same applies when ranking in terms of popularity, and 6 out of the 10 most-banned mid laners are assassins. Meanwhile, iconic mid lane mages like Lux, Syndra, Vel'Koz, Viktor, Xerath and Ziggs all have play rates under 4% (many of these champions in fact have play rates barely above 1%), along with win rates under 50%. With these mana changes, Riot is therefore setting out to unbalance the game for practically the entirety of League's playerbase, purely to address a problem that affects a tiny subset of players, and so in a manner that is unlikely to even resolve the actual issue. It's a terrible idea that is going to generate negative feedback for months, if not years on end, depending on how quickly it gets addressed, and the solution here should be to make changes that specifically target pro play, instead of screwing over literal thousands, if not millions of other players.****

There's is literally NOTHING enjoyable in a mage vs Leblanc orYasuoorKatarina match up BECAUSE ONE SIDE HAS BEEN GIVEN ALL THE TOOLS TO OUTPLAY THE OTHER RIOT GAMES AND ONE TOUCH FROM THEIR ABILITIES CAN COST YOU YOUR FUCKING LANE, yet <Removed by Moderation> is perplexed as to why mages choose to abandon "laning" completely and opt to clear waves. It blows his ADC mind that having literally 0 options to play aggressively because of a severe discrepancy in mobility and ability consistency results in people who play their champions passively unless the skill discrepancy is so massive that none of that matters.

Even vs Fizz orZed every match up literally boils down to roll your face at them before they hit level 3, if you didn't slap your face on your keyboard hard enough then you're not allowed to interact anymore because you'll take 90% of your hp in a single trade, and post 6 if you get touched you die. Wow Riot, that's so fun to play against, I can't understand why mages don't choose to MUH INTERACTION more with assassins :O.

Thing is, ADCS too powerful to the point they can 1v1 the characters made to destroy them, they hit their power spikes at 2, 2.5 items the hardest in the game.

Mages on the other hand are the only ones left on the Mid lane capable of producing utility, zoning & wave clear for their team.

The mages adjustments are part of the larger plan which is related to the ADCs taking an adjustment hit during Mid Season.

but they cant stay alive.. they get focused because no tank does enough dmg to get focused first and since mages have no mobility they get closed in on.. im siqk of 4 man ganks to midlane while i play tali.. its heartbreaking

But if they care about LCS so much then why dont they do anything about every game being 3 tanks 1 adc + sup with the whole team playing around the right clicker?

Is LCS really 3 tanks + adc + supp?

I understand a tank top maybe, with gnar+sion butttt aren't Camille+Irelia pretty strong?

I don't understand how jungle is dominated by tanks unless Sej is back, because it seems like Kha'Zix/Olaf are the dominant champs I don't really understand a tank mid either unless it's Galio who's been dominant since his rework. I feel like there are a lot of actual mages (not tank) that are viable.

So maybe I'm missing something or you're exaggerating? Understand that I'm actually asking questions here because I don't watch lcs, I do however have heavy involvement with Collegiate League

Zane Zephyr3 votes

Apart from Kha it's mostly Sej/Trundle/Olaf with a splash of gragas and J4 in the jungle, but they all get built tank in every scenario

Also sion is a frequent pick midlane as well

Tank supports dominate bot lane for the most part as well too, usually all you see is braum ali and tahm and morgana occasionally for poke lanes

PB4UAME2 votes

Of all of the champions you've listed for the jungle. exactly one is a tank. . .

Morgana and Tahm are catchers so you have 2 support tanks, 1 in jungle with Sej, and then Sion as the only tank in mid?

So, 4 tanks are picked across 3 roles. What a tank meta. /s

Zane Zephyr2 votes

Which is my point

things like j4 and olaf aren't true tanks but they get picked and built as a full tank in every situation

I also forgot about Zac and Skarner too

Even when jax gets picked in the jungle he gets built full tank

It doesnt matter if they are true tanks or not, the fact of the matter is that they are being built as full tanks in every scenario

Snowman Arc9 votes

Most standard top laners right now are Sion, Chogath, Ornn, and in slightly less priority come Gnar, Camille, Fiora and Gangplank. The tanks are picked so much more often.

Support is also dominated by tanky champions. Alistat, Kench, Braum are the main three, with Taric coming up sometimes. Morgana is the only enchanter support being played lately, and thank's because of Kaisa.

Jungle is dominated by Olaf, Trundle, Sejuani and Zac, all of which build purely tanky - supportively. Khazix isn't much of a priority right now, Nidalee is a very rare pick, same as Lee Sin or other carries like Elise.

Mid lane is also still dominated by tankier champions like Sion and Galio, with the standard competitive mid laners still being in there in Azir, Taliyah and Ryze.

Literally, nothing else is being played right now. Top is mostly tanks, same as Jungle and Support. Mid is 50-50, because if Galio is open, then someone is most probably gonna pick him.

Infernape5 votes

Tbh that's because tanks have the most CC and peel to protect their carries (namely ADCs).

Snowman Arc6 votes

Most of the fanbase doesn't realize the kind of champions that are picked in the LCS. There are certain aspects that champions must have in order to be picked.

The biggest thing is range vs melee. If a champion is ranged, then it's almost always a carry champion. Mostly, an ADC or a Mage. (Enchanters supports also exist here). Generally, they are squishy, but they have the ability to provide insane damage and most of the team comp revolves around them.

Melee champions are quite more complex though. Since being melee means that you put yourself in danger in order to deal damage, most of the time you want tanky champions. Also, a tank champion on its own isn't enough, you need that champion to be able to do something active, rather than being just a meatshield. So, for example, Mundo is useless, because he's just a meatshield. That's why you pick tanks you have a lot of CC, engage, interrupts etc. Sion has a lot of that, Ornn, Maokai, Chogath have quite a lot, while also being extremely tanky and have some damage.

So, you either pick CC melee tanks, and high DPS ranged characters. That's the basic philosophy. Sure, you see top lane carries like Fiora, or Jungle carries like KhaZIx.

Having some way to assist the team with a semi-global ability also is a huge thing. That's why things like Galio, Sion, Taliyah and Ryze are so contested picks.

You can't really ban teams from picking a strong ADC so Red side usually opts to ban the strong mids/top Camille, Azir, GP. Generally top is a tank, GP or a counter pick.

http://www.gamesoflegends.com/champion/picksandbans.php?id=ALL&league=TOP5&season=S8&split=Spring&patch=ALL&role=JUNGLE

Easily 80% of the Jungle picks in pros this season have been tanks. Olaf JarvanIV Are built full tank pretty much every game in pro play. Jax Is also built full tank most of the time in pro play.

I don't really understand a tank mid either unless it's Galio who's been dominant since his rework. I feel like there are a lot of actual mages (not tank) that are viable.

Mages get picked, but more for they utility the provide IE Ryze for point and click CC and his Ulti or Ori for the Shockwave, Speed boosts, wave clear ect. Sion mid actually have the same play rate as Syndra Mid for Spring split.

Two divers and a skirmisher being built defensively with utility in the jungle does not suddenly make them goddamn tanks.

For fuck's sake. I wish people learned the difference between Skirmishers ala Yasuo, Fiora, Jax, Camille, Irelia etc who will often build tri + steraks + titanic (aka three offensive items, or some combination thereof, including a minimum of 1 - 2 of theses items as a core build) into a smattering of defensive purchases afterward so they can survive in fights; Divers, like Olaf, J4, Hec, Vi, etc who tend to build a Black Cleaver or Triforce into full tank, or nearly full tank, and who try to disrupt teamfights by diving and attempting to kill the backline; and the classes that ACTUALLY FUCKING ARE TANKS the Wardens and Vanguards.

Hawthorn Tree54 votes

You only see assassins because most people playing this game are garbage. They can't understand the concept of biding their time, and if they can't go aggro whenever they feel like going aggro, they rage out of their God damn minds. So when they don't back off from a bad trade, die, and eventually lose the game, they simply blame it on their champion, completely disregarding the advantage they would have over their opponent if they just sat back and played it safe until they scaled.

So, you're saying mages should give up every canon which hold most of the gold so he doesn't take at least 50% of his health?????? Assassins are and always were cancer designs in any game, this one too. A class that deletes you in 1 to 2 seconds and then vanishes without you being able to do something will always be cancer. But mains will never admit it.

If you have to miss every cannon, then the problem isn't the assassin, but your positioning and game knowledge, and maybe itemization. Manipulate waves better and stand on the side of the map closest to your jungler. Position yourself so that the assassin cannot effectively reach you and zone the assassin at the same time. If you are unable to zone the assassin (for example: hard counter or already behind) you should just focus on farming and juking skills anyways, and in which case you should not be complaining because a champion that is behind should not be able to contest one that is supposed to snowball when ahead. Stand by the wave so that the minions will aggro if the assassin tries to engage. Understand power curves of the assassin you are playing against. For example: Zed has weak pre 6 against most mages, then has a lot of kill pressure for the rest of laning phase unless playing against a counter, who slightly lowers his kill pressure. Talon has incredible level 2 and level 3, and will do a ton of damage early on, and slightly fall off later. If you still have a ton of trouble, don't be afraid to take resolve secondary, or grab a cloth armor/null magic mantle/extra starting item, or even ninja tabi/armguard/negatron cloak if applicable

Keep in mind that assassins only stomp players who are bad at the game. If you don't respect their damage early, they lose their effectiveness and utility later. A good player (or team, if the assassin is a jungler) can completely shut down an assassin. See: the dopa video where he beat Fizz in lane as TF

Don't you get it? You're not allowed to play the laning phase vs an assassin. You just have to accept that you can't cs, or farm under turret when they're around, or roam, or follow roams because otherwise you DIE. And you should just deal with it because circular assassin main argument that assassins are inherently designed to be unbalanceable cancer, and therefore it's ok for them to be, and consequently all your grievances are automatically invalid.

I've literally played a game where the introduction of an assassin class eliminated almost all open world pvp because nobody was having fun getting 100-0 from stealth, back to stealth. People would just rather not PvP at all, and the MAIN APPEAL of the entire game was open PvP!

Playing a mage that needs time in soloQ is a terrible experience, though. Since the soloQ mentality is "you can't trust anyone to carry, but yourself", you must make things happen on your own. Like it or not, that's how it goes. Since matchmaking is so shit, you can't know if your teammates are gonna be monkeys or not, so you only have the constant of yourself to rely upon.

This means that sometimes, you have take to risky plays in order to get ahead, especially if the team is falling behind, in an attempt to salvage some games. Guess what though. A late-game scaling mage like Viktor won't have much success in making lots of plays versus someone like a Zed who can all-in someone and kill them most of the time.

I can have all the patience in the world, if that means that I will win the game, trust me. The thing is, if your top laner is 0/5 and your bot is 0/15, you MUST try to make something happen. Patience goes out of the window here, you can't just sit there and wait to scale up and hoping you don't already lose in the process.

...you think it's easy, or even possible, to solo carry with assassins? Right now, no matter how fed we are, we aren't killing the front and back line together. If I got nobody wrapping up my fights after the enemy carry dies, I'm still not gonna gain a single LP, ever. Also, since we can't engage our own fights, and had all of our kill-forcing potential gutted in the class rework(look to fucking Talon and how much dive potential he lost), if our front line is braindead then we aren't teamfighting, ever.

Bottom line is, back when assassins, especially AD assassins, had enough item slots to build all their penetration and then still have room left for DPS/sustain, they had an advantage in solo carrying. Zed could pop the ADC and then turn on the tank with his item 3153 . Talon had his crit build, as well as enough AoE to mow down an entire team. But now, everybody has to rush 3 Lethality items and a Cleaver to do burst, before being forced to add a LW to the laundry list because item 3026 item 3047 combo is still retarded. And none of that is even counting the massive gutting that was the assassin rework.

Snowman Arc4 votes

Well, as an Assassin, you at least have the option to roam and pick up easy kills. It's really not that hard for a Zed to snowball by picking up kills in the bot lane. Mages don't have that. What I'm saying is that assassins do have some sort of agency after the hit level 6 and through the entire mid-game. They are also a threat late game, because there is always the idiot who will try to splitpush and die to an assassin.

The "agency" that assassins have is really more depressing than anything, though. One thing is just enchanter supports not giving a fuck about how well any assassin plays, and another is a low elo/autofill kind of thing, where you can work hard and spread gold leads to your team, but your team doesn't get work done with said gold lead. Mages just flat out don't do much outside of their CC and safe dps, but assassins--we're the guys who do a bunch of shit and still lose anyways, lol.

Going off this, assassins should be in a bad spot. Despite the fact that they are denied by enchanters, they still have solid win rates and very high play rates. Not all of this can be chalked up to player mentalities.

The ignite buff was a large part of the problem, which is evident from the fact that almost every support is running it now.

Furthermore, the issue with a lot of assassins is that their level 6 is extremely oppressive. Most assassins only have to hit 1 skillshot to burst an opponent, whereas most mages have to hit 2 or 3.

Lol this is because mages and assassins hit the prime of their power at different stages of the game. To a Nasus, every lane opponent is oppressive. Mages, compared to the early-mid powers of assassins, are not much better than Nasus. So just chill out and wait until teamfights, where you can be casting onto the enemy ranks non-stop while the assassin has to spin twenty thousand plates just to get themselves into the fight without exploding instantly.

Jon 6789104 votes

I don't understand the point you're trying to make. It's obvious that assassins should be worse in teamfights than mages when they are better in duels. It's the exact same situation as fighters vs tanks in top lane.

The problem I was trying to raise is the reliability of assassin ultimates. Akali's ultimate is 3 point and click dashes. Diana's ultimate is a point and click dash. Zed's ultimate is a point and click blink. Katarina can literally shunpo and then ult a target. It's kinda hard to dodge skillshots when they're done at point blank range.

I'll clarify that I have less of a problem with stuff like talon, ekko and fizz. I actually feel bad when I get hit by fizz ult, because I could have sidestepped it. Talon has a less reliable gap closer, meaning he has to play around terrain. Ekko's kit is telegraphed, through his W's delay and his ult clone.

Playing against Assassins is one of the most miserable laning experiences in League of Legends. I've played all five roles and I don't think I've ever had less fun or been more miserable than trying to play a LuxTaliyahOrianna -esque champion into any of these guys: Zed Fizz Kassadin Yasuo Katarina Talon Ekko Leblanc etc

The next closest "bad experience" would be playing a melee top against a ranged top like Teemo Vayne.

What is really annoying is how those champs can easily hard roam most of the game while still having an easy time wave clearing and not taking much punishment if any at all. The other bad part of their design in general is how they snowball extremely hard off just building part of 1 item. Kat - LB hex, Yas Zeal, Fizz Sheen, and Kas any part of his roa, Zed his poachers.

The other annoying thing is that each of those champs have a ton of mobility and can easily dodge skill shots while also having no real resource management needed. Plus some of these champs even get shields or short CDs on their "get out of jail free" skill.

Riot wants to nerf mages who can't even take towers nearly as fast as any other role ( minus the small exception like Azir as an example. ) They claim it's to help with the upcoming ADC changes, but that is just a stupid thought process to work off of. You want to nerf a role entirely so that you can then nerf another role after? How about putting in the QOL changes that ADCs need on their itemizations and ratios. How about just entirly doing away with crit finally or putting a cap on it? It's honestly not fun to watch an ADC "skill" or right click just to win a fight. There is literally no punishment to the role at this time because they are super safe with their items giving lots of mobility, boosted range, health, shields, aspd, on top of that stupid 1-2k crit dmg. It's time to admit there is a real problem and address it riot. Supports being able to actually protect their ADCs with a ton of utility is nice, but I agree I feel that when a fight comes up, no one else matters much except my adc. If I can keep my adc alive for just a few seconds and cc their adc, we win instantly. ( I got so sick of support the last 2 seasons I'm started going into JG and Mid more because everything is about just getting bot lane the win. )

You guys screwed up with the rune changes, adc itemization, sup itemization, and even some of the AP changes. You don't however go and nerf an entire role because the one you want to nerf is "supposed to be nerfed" after that. This just proves how biased the team is by making sure that the most played role they abuse is safe once their nerfs come around. Also, mages have been dominating mid forever as you claim, but yet most of the roster for mid laners is guess what, mages. That isn't the players fault there isn't more versatility being played mid except seeing adcs now starting to show up there. ( Which apparently is fine. )

I never see complaints from the team on ADCs JGing, sitting mid, or even going top. Yet every other role is forced to go to one lane and only 1 lane. If a character even steps one inch out of line, they are actually getting rush nerfed that next patch. ADCs go patch after patch until finally getting hit. Ez, Varus, and Kog are prime examples of waiting patches just to get changes launched for them.

If Darius was going bot and dunking on people down there, I'm pretty sure he would be suddenly having adjustments being launched the very next patch to put him in his place. How dare he leave top lane and actually try to go somewhere else.

Zerenza6 votes

I think it's probably because those champions have higher mechanical skill caps, a huge number of counter's and fall off(usually, looking at you Yasuo, with yourr 0/9 powerspike.).

Like, for example if your the Sup and you see an Evelynn on the enemy team, pick Morgana(Though i ban her.) reason? She hard counter's Evelynn W, which is core to her kit and basically 30% of her reason she can one shot somebody, all morgana has to do is Spellshield somebody when Eve W's them and she can't kill them.

Kasssadin and Yasuo are "Late-Game" scaling Assassin/Fighter's, both of them can one shot you if their ahead and Kassadin has some amazing one shot's later into the game but there are plenty of counter's for both of them, and remember both of them have horrific lane phases. Basically you want to pick someone that can either, shut them down early(Such as Malzahar or other Assassins that have better early games) or you'll pick someone who has a safe lane phase, good wave management and outscales them anyway.

Counter's for Late Game Assassins: Ryze Cassiopeia Malzahar Karma Janna Soraka and all Early Game Assassins.

Fizz, Zed and Katarina are Mid-Game assassins, their spike usually happens during Lane Phase and Continues into Mid-Game where they more often than not get fed due to lack of play around them. Unlike Kassadin and Yasuo, the actually have pretty strong early games but they fall off really hard late, so anyone that can lose lane and win the game, such as Yasuo or Kassadin are good same class counter's going into them but early game focused champions that are good at Roaming are really great to since you don't have to worry about their early game power at all and will scale better later anyway.

Counter's for Mid-Game Assassins: Galio (Match their Roams) Talon (Your early game is stronger than all 3 of those champions.) Chogath (It's saucy but it works, silence+CC+true damage execute, they can't do anything.) Karma Malzahar Soraka Sona

You'll notice something, in both versions i listed Enchanter supports, the reason why is because they completely negate an Assassins damage if the assassin isn't already fed. Assassins unlike other classes rely heavily on getting ahead and staying ahead, to prevent them from doing that pick champions that farm well, scale well, out trade them or are just too tanky for them to deal with but these rules extend past Mid-Lane options. Chances are if you pick any of these champions.

You'll probably end up against an assassin, and while you can take Exhaust, Barrier or Heal to prevent them from killing you easily your team needs to pick something to stop them in Mid-Game and Late-Game. If your team is full of squishies and has 0 CC or Healing, the assassin has a field day. So if you have the option and you pick after the assassin does, pick a counter to them if one doesn't already exist, trust me it'll make their life a living hell because you have just 1 counter.

It's cause assassins are more fun for a lot of people. Not that they're necessarily pushing mages out of mid. Although they technically do because it's their entire job to kill people lmao.

I play mid almost every game, between my two accounts ive played against real mages 4 games out of 20. Literally 6 straight games with Leblancs before i started banning her, before that 4 straight games against Fizz, if either of those are banned then its fucking Yasuos, Zed or Katarinas.

NO ONE FUCKING EVEN PLAYS MAGES IN SOLOQ THIS SEASON.

The only reason I would say people are playing LB is because of her revert

yas and zed are normally perma bans so it's not a surprise that someone locks them in if they get through draft

But that's the point.

When any of those picks is free, people pick them over mages. So the dominance argument becomes complete BS when the most desirable champs are not mages.

Yasuo isnt an assassin

He might as well be with conqueror, if he hits you with a tornado at lvl 6+ignite you're pretty much instantly dead.

Well LeBlanc got her recent revert so her playrate should be pretty high atm. I gotta ask tho how many of those games are you actually losing? Yeah playing against an assassin can be unfun sometimes (personally idc cause I'm fine playing against anything) but that doesn't mean you're gonna lose the game ya? Like at least against an assassin you gotta think more, when you're against another mage it just becomes waveclear 24/7 xD

Do you play as an immobile mage? That might be why you face assassins so much? Right?

Cause im always the first to pick right? Damn you're smart.

Most mages are immobile. Viktor, Orianna, Syndra, Taliyah, Annie etc. The only mages that have a mobility spell are Lissandra and Azir.
