Runes and masteries, are they needed? what do they contribute to the game?

Basically, I recently introduced a couple of friends to league and they are very much put off by runes and masteries, claiming that the dislike them because they give an " advantage " before the match even starts.

What do you think? Do runes and masteries add depth to league, or are they just another unnecessary mechanic contributing to balance problems? I'm just curious what the rest of the community thinks.

its mean to give you a chance you personalize/customize based off of your play-style. its really only unfair when one player had them all unlocked and the other doesnt.

Runes and masteries in this game are a lot like a woman's shoe collection: although she may think that each one has some special importance/meaning, the "truth" is that there's barely any difference between them and it's probably a waste of time and $ to even bother going after them.

but when you are playing rank lvl 30 and you have 16+ champs and so on ... you should have at least to basic rune pages. one for ad and one for ap.

prior to lvl 30 and rank play its not as big of an issue.

but the runes and masteries are there for you to customize how you build and play your champs to your liking...

the issue lies is people instead of doing this... automattically do math ( or find where its been done for them ) and calculate what is the best and most optimized rune setting for whatever champ they are playing...

and therefore if you dont copy and do the same you are at somewhat of a disadvantage

but levels 1-18ish they really dont have that big of an impact on the game at all...

i have a smurf account lvl 13 or 15 i think and with out runes even vs people who may have some runes i can still win and perform over them but that is based on experience and game knowledge

I like 'em, but hey, it's my first MOBA and I love messing with stats before a game, so maybe that's just me.

I enjoy having the ability to adjust my setup based on the match-up and/or my play-style.

While I dislike the current mastery system (since offensive and defensive masteries are rather poorly balanced compared to one another), I do like the existence of the systems.

i had an idea i through out a long time ago when people would make post after post crying over the "cost" of runes...

i said get rid of them... and get rid of masteries i got lit a flame like a bbq on 4th of july

i said it would be easier to balance items and champs around not having either...

balance the game based on that...

slightly buff items... and champs to make up for the difference that runes and masteries would influence and let the game be and adjust from there if balance issues happen to arise ... it would be simpler and easier to know where power spikes are occurring and where champs are falling behind...

for champs like assassins give them idk built in armor pen as part of their stats to make up for lack of armor pen runes...

buffs tanks hp and mr/armor

make adcs have better as and base ad and scaling ad

and so on...

it wouldnt have to be huge changes but i really do feel if runes and masteries werent there it be easier way to balance the game
