If the PBE buffs on Frostfang/ Frost Queen's claim go live, they'll be staples on AP Mids

MealReadytoEat··4 votes·7,223 views

Frostfang costs a total of 850 gold on PBE, 15 less than on live, and grants 15 ap (Live gives 10), 100% mana regen (Live gives 50%), 2 gp 10, and the same Tribute passive, but which now gives 15 gold instead of 10.

Frost Queen's claim is 2200 gold, same as live, and grants 50 ap (same as live), 150% mana regen (The highest in the game. Live gives 50%), 10% cdr (same as live), 2 gp 10, and tribute for 15 gold and damage, while live gives 10.

The active on FQC is much stronger now - it's a stronger version of the Twin Shadows active. It sends out 2 spooky ghosts that find the 2 nearest champions (range ~ 6000 units, but subject to standard unit pathing) and slows them for 40% for 4 seconds. It gives mages very strong escape, chase, and vision, and lets them easily set up their combo.

Yes, Frostfang, but not FQC, gets its tribute disabled for 12 seconds whenever you kill a minion. However, it continues to build stacks during that time, so you can unload all 3 stacks whenever you haven't killed any minions in the last 12 seconds. This happens pretty frequently, considering minions only spawn every 30 seconds.

Compared to Morrelo's, FQC is 350 gold cheaper, gives 50% more mana regen, has a powerful, long range slow that can't miss and also warns you of danger, gives you sick gold income, and builds out of a 850 gold item with as much mana regen as Morello's that also has gold income.

It seems like a more than reasonable trade off for a grevious wounds passive you probably won't make much use out of, 10% cdr, and 30 AP that's largely offset by the 45 damage 3 stacks of tribute offers.

We've seen FQC and Frostfang as common items mid last time they were strong, and this time they're even stronger.

Mid laner isn't gonna buy the new FQC because of the active. If they did then we would have seen Twin Shadows every game. Twin Shadows gave 80 AP, 6% movement speed, 10% CDR, and the same active.

Tribute passive and gold generation is also worthless because you already get tons of gold from CS and you're paying 850g for pretty crappy combat stats. with 850 gold i could buy fiendish codex instead that give 25 AP and 10% CDR and actually builds into something better than FQC for mid lane.

Even currently as a support right now with Frost Fang I get only averages 500 gold with tribute passive by the 20 minutes mark and about 200 from the passive gold generation.

MealReadytoEat2 votes

Tribute gold went up 50%, which is why it's so much more tempting. At the 20 minute mark, frostfang has paid for itself, and given you a crap ton of regen. That's the point.

Losing 30 AP, 10% cdr, and a grievous wounds passive you probably won't make much use out of seems like a pretty good deal to me.

And the active is fantastic for quite a few mids. Brand and Veigar can use it to catch up to someone playing passive to land their combo, for instance.

Just because you get gold income from CS doesn't mean you don't want more.

50% doesn't make that much of a difference for an item that doesn't give a lot of combat stats for a mid laner. So you get maybe 750 golds (assuming you used your passive every time it's up which is impossible in mid lane) and around 300 gold at 20 minutes (going by my averages). Not a lot for a mid laner who can get another item to reach their power spike sooner so they are stronger.

I can get rylai and that would achieve the same purpose as FQC but is even stronger. 800 HP, 100 AP, 40% slow on every abilities rather than just affecting 2 champions.

Gold generation is good, but when you're giving up combat stats and items that let you reach that power spike then it's a pretty bad trade off. Mid lane wants the most AP as possible in their build so they can burst someone down. Spending 850 on Frost Fang for the gold passive alone is a huge waste of money because you don't get a lot out of it as a mid laner

MealReadytoEat3 votes

Rylai's requires you to land a spell, only last for 1 to 1.5 seconds, and can't be used to scout or reveal.

Most mid laners don't rush straight AP, as they need some form of mana regen. Morrelo's rush is pretty common, and I'm saying that FQC rush is often better.

Yes, their are champions like LB who want as much damage as possible to snowball, but mid to late game farming mid laners are more common, at least if we're looking at AP.

Between the gold income, the low price, and the crazy regen, a mid laner building it will surpass their opponent going for a different regen item in offensive power.

You're bound to land 1 or 2 spells. Not really that difficult.

Morello provides AP and mana regen along with 20% CDR. That's more AP and CDR than FQC provides, and a passive that is better for mid laner, too.

I still don't see the benefit of rushing Frost Fange/FQC on mid laner. Tribute passive you'll rarely proc and passive gold generation that is pretty abysmal for a mid laner. Athene give better regen and MR and 60 AP.

Since warding also is easier in season 6 now that trinkets have 2 wards, vision/scouting isn't a problem. Never was in the first place.

MealReadytoEat2 votes

Okay, you're not bound to land 1 or 2 spells. Look at Veigar - he has to get in range for his stun, and against someone like Lux he'll never be able to do that without flanking or slowing her. Plenty of other combo mages are in a similar spot.

LIke i said in my posts, Morello's is 350 more gold, less mana regen, has a worse build path for the mana regen, and the passive itself is unlikely to matter much. Not many heals mid lane.

And wardings is way harder in S 6. Green wards are gone, warding trinket can't even have a single ward up at all times until level 18. Yes it can store two wards, but it takes longer for it get wards, and they last a shorter amount of times. Sweeping trinket was also heavily buffed. And there's no trinket upgrades to get more wards either.

I can tell you i'll consider using it with my Sona mid, probably building it in matches i know i won't win lane in (VS Akali and such) or in game with high threat junglers (AKA; not Skarner) just so that no matter what happens i ALWAYS have a bit of gold income from somewhere, Sona being bad at waveclearing also means as soon as mid game pops, she loses out on a lot of CS. Besides, it's ridiculously easy for her to proc all three gold income procs at the same time. Consider that for each proc of gold you get, the cost of the item technically goes down. Usually i'll sell it at a profit late game and build my last item before anyone else if i'm not feeding.

Not saying it's gonna be good on all mids, but it's a fairly good placeholder for mids who are behind until late game when you sell it for a Rabadons/other.

^This guy gets it.

Morello or Athene's rush is the default for almost every AP champion I play (unless facing Yasuo or Zed). And the reason I rush those items is for mana regen. The CDR/MR is nice on top, but the 100% mana regen is essential. With the new Frostfang, that will be about 1500g cheaper than before. That's basically a NLR and boots.

That extra percent gold is really gonna help once you have wasted 2000 on frost queens you only get more then 12 secs between waves when you fast push which means you would miss cs in order to accommodate taking a support item in mid

Xyltin1 votes

I think it is possible that the item will get used on AP champs in solo lanes, but I also think there are enough options to limit its gold generation power with an even longer CD after taking a CS. I also think that 150% mana reg is not the best option for mid laners. Often they get the morellos mana reg and are happy with it or they got for chalice or tear because they need way more mana reg or max mana. the 150% will be ok for some mid laners, but not everyone will make that good use if it.

MealReadytoEat1 votes

There's very few mid lanes that would want any mana regen past the 150% from FQC. The main point of getting it is that it's a very effective and gold efficient source of mana regen.

Dominick Destine3 votes

Except then you remember Twin Shadows' active has always been trash... they've buffed it repeatedly precisely because of how trash it is.

There is no (competent) support that considers Twin Shadows' active superior to the current Frost Queen Claim's active... that being said, I like that they're changing FQC from a useless piece of garbage to a potentially useful upgrade.

Of the three support gold-generation item final upgrades; FCQ was overwhelmingly the worst.

MealReadytoEat2 votes

It's a much better active than Twin shadows. Ghost move faster, and slow for 40% for 4 seconds. It's WAY stronger than the current active, and can't miss.

Ezreal yes please

MealReadytoEat1 votes

I've been doing that some. Pretty decent, others use it better.

Rageblade is pretty legit on him now, built either AP or AD.

Meep Man1 votes

You know, except the passives disappear for a couple seconds the minute you kill a minion until you get Frost Queen's... and there is much better AP giving items with that much gold.

MealReadytoEat1 votes

Not one's that give 100% mana regen. And like I said in the post, there's plenty of times you will get those stacks off. Minions only spawn every 30 seconds, so it's quite possible to have a 12 second window between killing them.

mid laners building frostqueens...

lol

MealReadytoEat2 votes

Were you around when the item was first released? It was the dominant mid lane pick then.

Give it time, people will think the smite+teleport top lane was a myth.

I miss double relic bot lanes, and full AP taric, so much.

At Least Morde brings relic shield back.

7ha7guy7771 votes

I still do double relic voli/singed and rammus/malphite in normals occasionally. Depending on the matchup it is pretty solid. Should be intertesting if FF turn's into Kage's Lucky Pick 2.0.

MealReadytoEat1 votes

I've been doing Morde, Yasuo, and J4 ADC basically every game in ranked.

I need to stop doing it without a duo though, support are super unreliable when I do it, because they tend to have no clue what's up.

Before s1 even started, a bit after the original twisted treeline release.

I was, and it was for a few days. Then people realized that STE/Frostfang are utterly useless in lane, making FQC considerably less worthwhile.

It will depend on the champion. Some can utilize it pretty well (especially Brand), but others will have trouble considering it's disabled after killing a minion.

MealReadytoEat1 votes

FQC isn't disabled after killing a minion, but yes, not every champion will benefit from it equally. Brand's the one I've used it on most on PBE, largely because he was indirectly buffed in other ways on PBE.

Kitten of Evil1 votes

It will also help you push mid tower faster.

Kitten of Evil1 votes

They had me at 100% mana regen. I'm not even kidding. Right now you pay 600g for 50% mana regen (Forbidden Idol -- which admittedly has CDR too), I'll happily pay 250g more to double that. Everything else on top of the mana regen is gravy.

MealReadytoEat1 votes

Indeed. And when upgraded to FQC for 1350 more gold, its 150% regen, higher than anything else in the game.

Killing a whole minion wave with 1 spell at all stages of the game, grevious wounds useless, 10CDR useless, 45 flat damage better 30AP. Confirmed by MealReadyToEat, 2015.
