I mean champions that actually utilize it well, and not just something like, "Veigar is infinitely stacking, so I can build anything I want on him and still 1-shot people!" Something that can entirely change the way you play that champion, to fit and adapt to certain scenarios. I'll just give a few examples, starting with the most obviously forced one.

Kayn can use essentially the same abilities to do drastically different things when altered by his Blue and Red forms. item 1400 item 3147 item 3095 item 3087 item 3031 item 3117 on Blue Kayn lets you just cuck absolutely anyone. item 1412 item 3812 item 3142 item 3071item 3053 item 3111 Red Kayn will let you dominate in 1v5's with all the mad sustain you get. item 1400 item 3071 item 3065 item 3742item 3053 item 3111 will let you just CC-lock people down for your team all day long like the obnoxious hob-knocker you are.

One guy, three scenarios. Brilliant!

I got to M7 on the duelist Malphite tbh, and Ardent Shenser is absolutely amazing if you have someone like Yi, or Yasuo, or Jinx on your team

I always thought that Blitzcrank was one of the most versatile champs in terms of builds (on paper, at least).

  • Great supporting capacity with hook and silence
  • Great AP scalings on hook and ult can allow for a cheesy magic burst build
  • Double AD can allow for a bit of physical burst as well
  • Good attack speed buff can allow for a right click/bruiser build
  • Mana-scaling passive makes him make potential good use of blue builds item 3003 item 3004 item 3025 while staying hard to kill

Before her Q was nerfed to deal only 70% damage to further units, she used to work with a full tank build, being played as a CC bot with some utility. It can still be played, but you then have abysmal waveclear, so I wouldn't recommend it. Dedicated on-hit builds seem appealing, but sadly, Lulu's passive doesn't work with Guinsoo, so I think if you really want to play her with an auto focused build, play her with a crit ADC build.

i remember old gangplank when you could literally build any item in the game and it wouldn't matter because you'd still be fucking worthless. and when i say literally any item in the game, i mean, literally any item in the game. good times.

I used to love playing Ap MF when it was actually a legit thing you could do. Very powerful e. R was even scarier since it was before her R being able to crit. And I think she had an Ap ratio on Q still. Then they gutted it and forced her to be a letality bitch.

Now your e is,basically useless again. If you want her to have a slow. Just give her a slow that does no damage but is stronger and be done with it. Used to love going Ap MF support and rush a liandrys and literally every E took at least a fourth your hp.

The problem is Riot tends to design Champions with too much synergy, like specific ratios or ability, so chains designed to allow multiple good build paths are rare.

Notice a lot of the older Champions (2012 and under) are more flexible, and less of the new ones?

Aatrox is a good example, he's ability damage and not an attacker so he builds raw damage, tank items. No Ap so no potential AP items.

Vladimir has (had) two.

There's CDR Vlad, where you build item 3158 item 3152 item 3135 item 3157 item 3089 item 3907 and rely on being able to get off multiple spell rotations in a fight, which currently is the only viable build for him, because Riot gutted his ability to do the other build, Gigalords Vlad, where you build item 3020 item 3089 item 3041 item 3165 item 3135 item 3907 and try to kill the backline in a single spell rotation (whereas CDR Vlad tries to get off more than one in a fight). Losing 20% of Vlad's E damage killed this build because you can't delete the ADC with REQ anymore (it was like -250 damage lategame).

He fits under the champions that don't, like Veigar. If he builds tanky, he still does lots of damage. If he builds damage, he's still decently tanky. Either way, he just E's in, taps Q, taps R, and hopes for the best. Getting enough base stats to pull any build off doesn't make him of good design; it just makes him overtuned.
