So irelia lost her true damage and sustain is only on casting Q now.
How is the supposed to top lane/lane against tanks again?

Maybe she's not supposed to go top anymore. With her new W, I'm thinking people might try her mid.

So riot turned a bruiser into an assassin?
If that does happen, i hope ppl riot about it, this is just not fine.
I'm not sure what subclass she is now. However, I look at her kit and I see a tool to protect you against ranged champs (the W) and a tool to set up counterganks (the E). Her ult looks like it'd be great if she roamed bot. I mean just imagine shutting down a lucian ult or keep draven from using his Q or Vayne from using her W.
She may not work mid, but I see potential there plus I know riot has been trying to get champs outside of the traditional meta roles.
Old Irelia is dead with this rework so we've got to try her out in a few roles to figure out where this new champ belongs.

Why not? They turned Sion, a hybrid melee carry/AP burst Assassin into a tank, and his rework was a huge success. What isn't fine about it?
they did this with Poppy, too, and that rework was a pretty huge success as well. I miss my melee burst 1v5 hypercarry, but new Poppy being a tank doesn't feel too bad, honestly.
So try the new irelia then rather than going full doomsayer on it
That's what I'm going to do. She looks like she'll make a really fun jungler.
Sorry I mixed you up with OP

Sion was a terrible melee carry, his most viable buid was ap burst "mage", ad sion only worked in bronze or silver.
Irelia has been and still is a decent bruiser for her whole existance in the game, thats the difference.

So what you're saying is, because Irelia remained as the archetype of champion she was for longer than Sion did, reworking her into a completely different archetype is somehow absurd compared to Sion?
Improvise. Adapt. Overcome.
I’m guessing it’s intended that Irelia now be a “Need Sheen ASAP” champion. Much like Fizz, GP, and Yorick, she’ll likely be prone to getting pushed around early game but once she gets Spellblade on her first back, her power and kill potential will be deceptively high, even before getting her ultimate.
This is where the first line of this post comes into play. Prior to being able to one shot minions, Irelia’s sustain in lane will be subpar, so you build to offset as much of that weakness if you so desire. Runes and Early items exist for a reason.
The DR might help, but it looks like she’s gonna rely on potions and health regen more now.
I think she'll be better as a midlaner/jungler with these changes, tbh.
Why do you see her as a jungler? In the past she was a terrible jungler because she was so item dependent. Now she doesn't have true damage or sustain on her W anymore.
well, it is a rework. We don't know for sure, although what we DO know is that her Q does increased minion and monster damage and the ramping-up magic damage might actually be fairly good for clearing (definately was for Kai'Sa). her E also applies the Q mark to large monsters, and for all we know, that W might actually be a fairly decent way to deal with certain camps (like, for example, the raptors).
We won't know until we see it, though. I think her ganks will be pretty good in the right hands with her marking mechanic regardless, however.
Well before she needed those. We don't know the numbers, the cooldowns, the base stats, etc. You say she doesn't have it on her W, but what if her Q resets grant true damage or they provide sustain when used vs marked enemies? All that happened there is they shifted power around.
Her Q frankly looks like it deals AoE now, but that could just be the effects. If the spell deals bonus damage to monsters, she shreds raptors, wolves and krugs with ease while getting leashed a buff. She could feasibly have a healthy level 3 gank with AOE STUNS. (which I think was the biggest mistake. Bruisers/assassins with ranged AoE hard CC is a dangerous proposition).
I think the Conqueror Keystone will give her the true damage she needs. Remember, it gies you a set amount of AD and %20 damage you deal is converted into true Damage.
To my understanding, she has a reset mechanic on her Q now, yeah? Or at least it’s a really short cooldown.

The reset mechanic was always there. This time though it seems to be able to reset on kill, AND on marked targets. If might even get to a point where Trinity Force would be not efficient on her anymore due to all the missed procs from using Q too quickly
