how does "grades" work (D to S+)

i understand that the better you do, the higher your grade. "S+" being the highest.

and from what i have heard on the forums, (if that is to be trusted), is that its based on how good you do compared to other players playing that champ.

but that got me thinking... ALL other players? or players in your elo?

becuase its seems to be if it included ALL other players then people in "challenger" would almost ALWAYS get a higher score.. the will have better CS better mechanics... they will place more wards. granted kills and deaths matter but other than just KDA (what im assuming isn't all the grading system looks at) EVERY challenger player will practically ALWAYS get an S.

same thing would go to bronze.. a bronze player would need to display a knowledge of the champion and role at at least "silver" or "gold" if that is the "average" between all players. and while i think becuase of the new season many players are still placed WAY to low.. (like myself, really hard to carry without getting teammtes who dont feed when your playing non carry champs in non carry roles)

or does the game just compare you to people in your ELO? did i do better compared to most other silver/bronze. in which case if i did get an "S" and i regularly get an "S" i probably shouldn't be in that elo.

i have a hard time believing it encompassed ALL players playing that champion.. because (correct me if I'm wrong) but i think the average of all players is silver? probably meaning i would need to display at least gold mechanics to a champion every time i go an "S"

if that is all it takes to get an "S" woulnt player in higher elos ONLY ever get "A" and "S"???

It's based on how you compare to others playing that champion in that role. I just take Leona top and get S all the time because rarely do people play her top.

yikes, if that's true then this rating system is even less valuable than I had originally thought. Not to mention that this'll encourage "bad" gameplay when people want to farm hextech boxes. Three keys and no boxes? Better go Sona Jungle!

It works off of a percentile system. In other words, you're being compared to other players who used that champion in that role (and yes, the system is capable of knowing the difference).

dont worry about grade just play and you will get S :D

Ok so yes, it takes into account high elo players, BUT, there's so little of them. Yes, a diamond player is gonna perform way about a bronze player, but there are so few diamond players compared to bronze/silver, their contribution to the average is basically negligible. What the "average performance" is determined by is bronze/silver, as they make up 80-90% of the population.

Tank/Heal supports (like Taric) get those kinds of grades because they're tanky, so they don't die too easily, their items are cheap so they can full-build a lot faster than assassin-like champions, they don't get a whole lot of kills (though sometimes they can go positive), they get a lot of assists, and heal their teammates. Basically, support is a very consistent role for getting good grades in games.

your grade is determined by:

  1. your kda.
  2. number of objectives you've taken.
  3. your kill participation in the total of your teams kills.

I would absolutely love some clarity on this too. It's difficult for me to understand why I get certain grades. For two recent examples I had as a support main:

  1. Went Braum. Was mentally distracted and didn't have a great game. I didn't do too badly but I screwed up more than a few times; I kept getting caught for stupid reasons that were completely my own fault and as a result died far more times than I needed to. I was even so distracted, I kept leaving early and missed getting any credit for turret kills. It was not a good game for me. I don't remember the score, only that I had more deaths than I would care to admit. I got an S rank.

  2. This is the game I just finished at the time of this post. Played as Nami, and did very well (or so I had thought) and was fortunate enough to have a an adc in lane whose playstyle meshed very well with my own (isn't that always a nice bonus in solo queue?) . On top of that, I was there to take assist credit in the destruction of three out of the four turrets we destroyed. I didn't play perfectly, I made mistakes I know I ought to improve on, but I was happy with my performance and awareness. My final score was 1/0/18 before they surrendered. I got an A rank.

So I'm thoroughly confused.

I went 20/4/8 as Vel'Koz today, and my ally teemo got an S with a lower ratio (around 10/5/5). Teemo was extremely helpful, but had few objectives. Somehow, I got an A.
