Just Curious: Why skew downward from placements?

I'm asking this question to learn, mostly, but:

If the results of placements skews downward (e.g. You were Gold 1, and now Silver 5) because we'll all end up where we should anyway, why not skew upward? Is the same result not achieved?

To make you play the game. They want people playing at the beginning of every season. Skewing upwards would be retarded.

why do placements even exist? i don't understand why we have to bother with 10 games. just let us all start from bronze 5 and we'll climb. there's nothing more frustrating that winning 8/10 placements and get in bronze from gold last season. what a waste of my time.

Amen. That's how I felt myself.

because the first few weeks of ranked would be even more hellish than they are.

They can't screw upward because every season the challenger and master bracket resets, meaning riot takes out everyone on challenger and master. Which means the challenger/master equivalent people are now in diamond, diamond people are now plat, plat is gold, gold is silver, and silver is bronze, and bronze is... well bronze. It also makes it so after you're beginning ranked season, meaning your first time getting placed in ranked, is actually the rank you get and deserve next season.

I just laughed to myself thinking if they skew everyone down, maybe they should just ban us Bronzies for 2 days.

or create a new tier called wood division

You'd still run into the issue of the bottom of wood players not having anywhere to be demoted too.

Although it's mmr that is the only thing that matter anyway, so theres already a massive difference between bronze 5's who are on the cusp of bronze 4, and the bottom of bronze 5, and they'd never be matched together.

i think the max demotion that cant get anywhere lower is hell division

Yes but that doesn't have the same droll element of British jackassary.

The golds will now be silvers the silvers will now be bronze and the bronze will be banned for a period of two evening to think about what they've done

Some people were/are boosted, especially due to dynamic last season.

Also, theres big changes every season, so occasionally people climb pretty far due to the meta favouring their playstyle/champs without actually being very well rounded.

The reset ensures everyone has a chance to prove themselves in the current meta, and that ones ranked achievements for a season are for that season. If there was no reset (or if it even skewed upwards for reasons unclear to me), people could just get a high rank in a season favourable to them (or get boosted), and then play like 1 ranked match a month and still appear to be diamond, despite having the game knowledge and skill of a silver.

why reset rank if hidden MMR isnt wiped.... i'll never place high cause my hidden mmr is low from playing the game for sngs vs actually trying to move up
