The playerbase in this game is unique

Hibeki··20 votes·1,206 views

Where in a competitive environment, the majority of the playbase does literally zero reflection and cant learn.

I dont give a shit if you played bad. Really I dont. If you have any shred of an IQ you can learn from your mistakes and prevent them.

But this game is special. You'll repeatedly get people who do totally dumb things, and instead of having any self reflection whatsoever they just go "Ok ill play another game hopefully it will be different"

THIS is where toxicity is born.

You get the toxic people who get upset that these people dont change (Even when told specifically what to do [since they clearly dont have a clue]) and just move on to ruin someone elses game

And the same people they are upset about are also toxic because they dont know why they lose all the time. They usually pin it on someone else (because that's easier than actually thinking about what theyve done) and get mad when people are upset about it.

Never ending cycle. True apes flock to this game. Not like dota 2 where the ranks have a true bell curve, no you have this game where 85% of the playbase are gold and below. Because they just ape out.

Toxicity is born when Player A sees Player B is not playing in the manner that Player A deems best, so Player A verbally attacks them.

Doesn't matter if Player A is right about the best way to play. Doesn't matter if Player A has his head up his own arse. It's that last bit, the verbal attack in a FREAKING VIDEO GAME, that is the problem. You're always welcome to give constructive advice, just not flame.

Acceptable: "Hey Leona, their ADC is doing the most work, you should try Thornmail." "Hey Kat, wait for the rest of us before you go in, you aren't fed enough yet for that." "Amumu, can you gank me next time they shove lane?"

Not Acceptable (no matter how godlike at LoL you think you are): "Leo build Thormail." -Leona doesn't build Thornmail- "WTF you retard gg report useless tank".

You missed a group of people in your summary, who I think most of the toxicity problem originates from: the people who believe they know more about the game than others, but actually don't, yet they flame people who don't play/build in the manner they think they should.

you make "verbal attack" sound like rape lmao

Placentas3 votes

Rape and molestation can apply to the psyche just as much as it can apply to the physical being.

The problem comes when you suggest something like Leona item 3075 and take 20 seconds to explain why yet they still ignore you because not only they dont't know about grievous wounds but also they are deaf to things that would make them win the game.

AirKingNeo1 votes

Supports shouldn't build Thornmail because it does nothing to help the team.

Raven Redeemed3 votes

Wait, what? How does surviving longer, dealing damage, applying GW, and reducing AS not help the team?

hoyohai5 votes

Because supports are supposed to die and only heal the ADC /s

Raven Redeemed1 votes

-_- you're trolling me aren't you

hoyohai1 votes

There is a very suspicious /s in my comment

AirKingNeo1 votes

Because supports it's a selfish item. You aren't protecting anyone. You should build Zekes or an engaging item.

Z3Sleeper1 votes

Situational. You can always build both.

It Hertz When IP2 votes

Thornmail could be used as an engaging item. If the enemy team's main damage source(s) are afraid to attack Leona, then once she dives into the enemy team she can go to town on their asses.

It's a really situational item tbh; I don't see the need for it very often. It DOES combine well with FH though.

It Hertz When IP3 votes

"Hey Leo, can you get Thornmail?"

"y tho"

"GW will shut down their carries"

That's it. No more explanation. If they ask with genuine curiosity sure, elaborate, but if they're still contesting that Thorn is a bad choice, just ignore/mute them and carry on.

Not sure how it being a video game changes anything. Could be a sport or card game or any other competition. All are the same thing.

Was more highlighting that this isn't a situation of any real importance in life. No one's going to lose their house, life, limbs, or family if their LoL match is lost.

How long can you be kind before you actually start treating people like true retards, though?

Me: "Yo, lets set up baron"

team goes into jg and dies

Me: Guys, we have a huge lead, why are you chasing kills? Lets just group and do baron and extend the lead further before they catch up

engages on enemy team and dies

Enemy team starts baron

I split push bot because of a 3v5 (2 people got caught)

My team: come to baron

Me: Nah, too late

Enemy team double kill

My team: please report for trolling

team goes off on me

Me: I'm not going to sit here and explain why all of you are actually insanely incompetent.

It Hertz When IP2 votes

Me personally? Quite a while tbh, I'm used to having to deal with retarded monkeys IRL.

In any match, as soon as someone on your team starts flaming, calling for reports, or just generally acting stupid, it's best to just immediately mute them. The odds that they'll suddenly have something useful or constructive to say are pretty damn low, and you can't get triggered by something you don't see.

The fact that League players overreact so ridiculously to verbal attacks in a " FREAKING VIDEO GAME" is just as much of a problem.

Raven Redeemed3 votes

I agree with some of this, but I think people don't often take advice because they are so used to getting flamed that they do not know how to drop their defenses and accept the advice. Toxicity is never acceptable in a video game. It usually accomplished nothing productive, decreases your team's performance, and begets more toxicity.

Also there are some mistakes you can make in League that are subtle and hard to identify. For example, a low ranked player probably would not know they made a mistake when showing themselves on the map as a jungler which allowed the other team to take an objective on the other side of the map. They would see no causation of their own actions leading to their objective loss far away. Or the laner who keeps getting engaged upon after they use their cooldowns on a wave might not realize their enemy is actually abusing windows of power. Is the average joe an idiot when they did not learn from the chess game they lost to a chess master who can think 10 moves ahead. Yes a lot of people refuse to learn, but some do not know what they did wrong, even if you do.

League rank is bell a bell curve too by the way. Here is an example of your ranked placement on it: https://i.imgur.com/cj6fBFR.png?noredirect If the majority of dota 2 players can attain a high rank by learning, the dota's ranked system would have a skewed bell curve (right-modal), not a "ture" bell curve (symmetrical).

Hibeki1 votes

That is not a true bell curve. The true bell curve would be smack in the middle, whereas you see the vast majority of the players are sub average.

Raven Redeemed1 votes

The League ranked bell curve is symmetrical which means that an equal number of people are above average as people below the average. A bell curve is not defined or determined by its location on the axis, but by a normal distribution of data points. The “middle” of a symmetrical bell curve is determined by the average of the data, not by some arbitrary point you decide on the axis.

You evidence your argument that LoL players don’t learn, and are thus bad, by their rank, which is are arbitrary values set by Riot. If they lowered the mmr requirements per rank so the majority of people were in plat would you suddenly think that League players are geniuses? Or what if they added some ranks below bronze so that the majority of people are in the middle?

Hibeki1 votes

The tip of the bell curve is below the starting/middle elo. The majority of players are below average. End of story.

Raven Redeemed1 votes

So you would indeed think that LoL players were geniuses if Riot lowered the mmr requirements for each rank so that the majority of people became high elo.

Like I said before, your evidence is based on Riot’s arbitrary scale (mmr/elo). It’s not very convincing when you say people are below average because they are below an elo which Riot decided upon, and you certainly can not use elo to compare with other games as they do not use the same system.

And once again, average is determined by the data, not the axis. The majority of people are average because the area under the cuve to left of the peak is equal to the area under the curve to the right.

Well, part of the problem is that the game matchmaking tries to enforce a 50% winrate. So it's quite possible that after 3 or 4 losses, you'll get matched against potatoes so your mistakes will go completely unpunished. Then you feel vindicated, like you did nothing wrong.

Toxicity in league was born from the ability to see both teammate and enemy CS

Not like dota 2 where the ranks have a true bell curve,

Oh no, dota 2 is full of pretentious assholes and, not to be racist, but a ridiculous amount of non-english speaking Peruvians/EUE players

It has always puzzled me as to why this game has a bigger player count than Dota when it's clearly the better game in most aspects.

hoyohai1 votes

I think it's because this game is easier and it's more well known.

Trust me i seen enough apes in plat-diamond that makes me question how the hell they got into that elo in the first place.

I'm not talking about the boosted division 5 players btw.

Velzard of Koz1 votes

Indeed, because LoL has this magical way of attracting this kind of people but other games just randomly don't. The wonders of this world.

Fedoran1 votes

This kinda thing really confuses me. Like one of the smartest people I know plays league and as soon as they start the game they become a 30 IQ monkey, wtf???

Lord Galvatron1 votes

Well, there used to be a bell curve in skill but the Season 6 dynamic que literally threw that thing into a blender and it's never recovered since. Honestly, anything below Diamond 2 is completely a meme. I met someone who I'm now good friends with at Uni. and he's been playing since season 6. Unlike him, however, he is Plat. 2 when we play together we almost always que up with Diamonds. Being a "10 Ranked Silver 1 scrublord" since season 5, I literally cleaned the enemy Kha'Zix's clock as Kayn and after the game realized that after a 25-minute stomp, 3 out of the 5 people we were playing against were low Diamond last season. At this point, I embraced what the game is and all you can do is try to educate them if they royally mess up.

This is why I'm one of those people who never surrender. This is how I got to Gold, by never surrendering. I literally just had a game as Xerath against a Zoe and the game, ACCORDING TO MOST PEOPLE, was pretty much over, everyone on my team wanted to end except one of my friends. Zoe one shots me with just her Q, and around 30 minutes we basically outscaled the entire enemy team. I was the one one shotting the Zoe with just my Q and Zoe was the one who dealt zero damage. This is why I fucking hate early game champions, a champion is so damn annoying and becomes useless later on. This is also why I hate playing them, I never like being behind and never having a comeback. I like playing champions who ALWAYS HAVE A CHANCE to come back. Take Blitzcrank for example, you can have the worst pulls in America for all I care, but as the game progresses, those hooks become more and more crucial, landing just one can be a game changer.
