You know, I absolutely love the new champ. xD

She's the opposite of an edgelord (unlike your last 20 champs), she's got a Disney vibe, she's super hyper and bubbly, her kit looks fun, and she's cute like a Yordle is.

First champ I'm actually excited about since Illaoi.

Agreed. She reminds me of the girl from Wreck It Ralph. I love how hyper she is.

Niyumi1 votes

The best part is how much she talks. Even Ivern and Lulu don't just sit there and mess with people the entire time they're fighting. :P

I don't know that she reminds me of anyone in particular though. Been a while since I watched Wreck It Ralph, so I donno how the girl acted.

She's hyper, talkative, and super happy.

Ivern Rakan Xayah Taliyah Braum TahmKench Jinx Kled Ekko I didn't realize these champs were considered "edge lords". They're pretty chummy and colorful tbh. Zoe on the other hand, is just flat out too cartoony with an extremely obnoxious voice. Just looks like some animated Nickelodeon character on cocaine running all over the place.

Niyumi2 votes

Okay first off, have you read the lore of any of those guys minus Braum?

Ivern, Rakan, Taliyah and Braum may not act edgy, but their lore (minus Braum and somewhat Taliyah) is VERY dark and edgy.

  • Ivern was a brutal pirate (I think) who killed hundreds of people, and heard about this magical tree and cut it down (so he could have its power) and was possessed by it basically, and now we have the hippy tree we do now.

  • Rakan and Xayah are trying to prevent their species from dying due to the lack of ambient magic.

  • Tahm Kench is literally a demon who tricks people into selling their souls so he can eat them

  • Jinx is a mass murderer / destroys the city and has zero empathy

  • Kled is hyper violent and kills anyone who comes into "his land"

  • Ekko built his time machine to try and keep his friend from dying, and no matter how many times he went back and tried to save him, he couldn't

Ben SwoIo2 votes

Nope, not really. I don't know what the requirements you guys have for considering someone an "edge lord", but I always assumed it was someone more along the lines of Yasuo Zed Darius Fiora Riven .

Either way, the first set of champs I listed don't come off as trying to be "cool" or "dark" or anything. They have more of a lighter side to them with a bit of humor. When you type out their lore or whatever, sure it makes them sound "edgy". But you can't tell me that these champs aren't more bubbly or humorous in game than anything, which is fine. This new champ though, is just way too over the top and comes off as annoying and obnoxious.

Niyumi3 votes

There's edgy, and there's an edgelord.

Edgy is something that's needlessly dark, violent and overall depressing.

An edgelord is someone who takes that to a whole new level and embodies it.

GhaelWinds1 votes

How exactly is fiora edgy?

SweedishGunner1 votes

She has a sword. :^)

Yaśuo Main2 votes

What the hell is wrong with being edgy. All I see being considered edgy is having a dark past and/or you have a dark purpose, neither of which are bad.

Hèntaî 2 votes

It gets kinda dull after a while

Yaśuo Main2 votes

Everything can get dull. LoL has a serious lore, and most lore is serious or whatever "edgy" is supposed to mean. It really doesn't help that anything that is dark and scary is automatically considered edgy. OP thinks being mentally insane reduces edginess, this is not a valid point.

Niyumi2 votes

You can have serious lore / settings without being an edgelord 100% of the time. It's called good writing.

ItsMaybelline1 votes

Kayne has the edgiest backstory.

Yaśuo Main1 votes

None of the last 20 champs other than maybe Kayn has this. Irrelevant and biased as all hell. You mean to tell me Ivern is an edgelord?

Niyumi1 votes

Have you read Ivern's lore? Bloodthirsty criminal, kills all kinds of people, and hears about this magical tree. Wanting the power for himself, he goes to cut it down, and is possessed by the spirit inside of the tree, becoming the hippy tree guy we have.

Yaśuo Main2 votes

Wow and Ornn is fine because his current self isn't as edgy as his past was. Hypocrisy at it's finest. And Ivern is not acting like an edgelord, having a dark past doesn't mean you are an edge lord NOR does it mean having a dark past is bad.

Niyumi1 votes

Ornn himself isn't edgy. Nothing in his lore about him is edgy. The things that happened around him are edgy for sure, but Ornn himself is not edgy.

Chembaron Yamada1 votes

That guy has a personal vendetta against his own brother and wants to kill him.

That is not edgy for you?

Niyumi1 votes

As I said, his lore is edgy, but Ornn himself isn't really dark, just gruff.

Like, if my brother went and killed an entire society of people that emulated me just because he was jealous of me having them... I'd want to kick my brother's ass too.

Chembaron Yamada1 votes

Aha, but Ekko is edgy for using the time machine he had already built to try to save his friend?

Does this mean in conclusion that if your friend dies and you got a time machine, you would be "whatever"?

If these are your arguments for Ornn not being edgy, then Ekko definitely isn't as well. Ekko's personality is actually pretty joyful.

Niyumi1 votes

Ekko built the time machine to save his friend and failed, no matter how many times he tried.

Chembaron Yamada1 votes

It is pretty obvious that saving his friend was not the reason for this invention. When his friend got killed, he already had the Z-drive in possession.

Let me explain why.

Why is Ekko not able to save his friend? As shown in the comic in which said friend dies, the problem is that he is not able to arrive the location it is happening before it's too late.

Why is he not able to come in time? Because, like his teaser video highly suggests, he is just able to jump for a short period. He can't time travel at will, he is just allowed to return to the point a few moments earlier.

So as long as we are not assuming that Ekko invented that time machine in a matter of less than a day, it's highly unlikely that the death of his friend caused the invention.

Additionally: his biography mentions that he found that hextech crystal and he was an inventor from the start. He doesn't need a tragic event to make him invent something. He does it because it is fun to him. And if the death of his friend would have been the reason why he built that device, they surely had mentioned so.

ItsMaybelline1 votes

Yeah but eventually all the wrist slicing and self loathing gets old really fast. Eventually someone just looks at the grim reaper and ask if he can do something else.

Yaśuo Main1 votes

As far as I know, LoL has none of that other than self loathing which is actually regret.

ItsMaybelline1 votes

This is a comment on general edginess more than edginess in LoL. Also LoL has two grim reapers (Kindred is a grim reaper of sorts and Kayne is very similar to a grim reaper design wise) and also a self loathing swordsmen. As for wrist slicing, i was just referring to edginess in general.

ItsMaybelline1 votes

Yasuo is a self loathing samurai. Kindred is a grim reaper in spirit and Kayne is a grim reaper in design. Also the wrist slicing and grim reaper comment was more of a nod towards edginess in general than actually something in lol.

ItsMaybelline1 votes

Are you seriously here debating that characters like Reaper (Overwatch) and Zed are not edgy/not cliche? Were you goth in middle school? Go watch a disney movie, it's food for the soul.

Yaśuo Main1 votes
  1. Yasuo has regret for letting his master get killed he doesn't loathe himself, I would know

  2. grim reaper design doesn't really mean grim reaper so its irrelevant to mention that

  3. Zed has both a dark self and current self but that's not as common as you think it is at all

Niyumi2 votes

What's wrong with being edgy?

  • Well, first off I hate people/games/shows who are dark and depressing like that (like, you can have a serious plot without making everything dark and gloomy).

  • Second, it is SO FUCKING OVERUSED it's not even funny. Go count how many happy, bright games / shows / animes you can find, and then count how many edgy, depressing ones. The edgy ones are 10x the number of the bright ones.

We live in a shitty world that makes me sad just thinking about it. People kill themselves all the time to get away from it. We really don't need more depression and dark stories / characters.

Yaśuo Main2 votes
  1. You need "dark and gloomy" to have a mood and conflict to set the mood. And the second you said "I hate" that immediately dismisses anything you said as fact.

  2. Cuphead literally just came out.

OPM Season 2 is coming out

DBS

and plentiful more like dragon maid

and If you live in a shitty world and you KNOW it, then you know that anything happy dandy in the face of evil/conflict is masking bad feelings therefore its just annoying to see anything happy for no reason.

  1. You need "dark and gloomy" to have a mood and conflict to set the mood. And the second you said "I hate" that immediately dismisses anything you said as fact.

You don't need anything. Have you ever read The Hobbit? Tolkien is sometimes called one of the best writers in the fantasy genre. Thing is, The Hobbit had both light and dark in it, and it wasn't monotonous dark and edgy crap like LOTR was (I think he wrote The Hobbit so much better than he did LOTR). The key to good writing is to make your story feel alive. In the real world, as shitty as it is, there are still happy people, aren't there? There are still good moments and bright spots. Not everyone is always walking around being depressed and sad, not every criminal is a bloodthirsty monster... there's variations, because everyone is unique.

Now, when your story is ALWAYS dark, it gets monotonous, and becomes boring to read -- or it could give the implication it's just one single event, which would make your story rather short-lived (and in League, none of the stories are just one single event). After a while of literally everyone copying that, it starts to become annoying.

So, in League, we have a couple characters that have stories that aren't the same tone as all the others, and are fun to read. Then we have 130 or so dark, gloomy, violent, depressing stories that I really don't care for -- but that's what sells, so that's what we get.

Go read The Hobbit, the Eragon series, anything by Piers Anthony, The Deathgate Cycle, Pendragon... lots of books that aren't always dark and gloomy, but have appropriate moods for what's going on.

  1. Cuphead literally just came out.

OPM Season 2 is coming out

DBS

That's four. I could list off a hundred that are dark and gloomy.

and If you live in a shitty world and you KNOW it, then you know that anything happy dandy in the face of evil/conflict is masking bad feelings therefore its just annoying to see anything happy for no reason.

In a shitty world, people manage to be happy. In a happy world, people manage to be sad. That's called being human.

  1. Again your entire essay is irrelevant because it has nothing to do with anything. "You don't need anything" then what are you doing here "Hobbit had both light and dark in it" proves my point because you need conflict and darkness evenly balance out a good book. Also, not much of LoL is really "edge" or dark even though people like Lux have dark encounters and they still try to be optimistic to up the mood and KNOW WHEN TO STOP BEING "HAPPY" WHILE THERE IS A BAD EVENT.

  2. Holy shit are you ungrateful. You think 130 champions are dark and gloomy entirely straight off the bat and that you don't care for them at all. "but that's what sells" and this is just even more ungrateful.

  3. We both know you can't list off one hundred without being equalized and/or overcome.

  4. I don't really know what you even meant to say.

And my point is that League is 99.99999% hyper dark and depressing. We have ONE champion who ACTUALLY has entirely positive lore and in-game personality, and that's Braum. Everything else has some entirely needless edgelordiness built into it.

And you wanna talk about Lux? Her happiness is a facade so she doesn't kill herself from the massive depression and isolation she feels.

  1. Holy shit are you ungrateful. You think 130 champions are dark and gloomy entirely straight off the bat and that you don't care for them at all. "but that's what sells" and this is just even more ungrateful.

I'm sick of the dark, depressing, edgy crap. It's ruining so many games, there are so few good books anymore, most TV shows are just garbage... I'm sick of it. Almost all the champs in this game are BEYOND dark, and take it to a silly extreme. Why? Because it sells.

  1. We both know you can't list off one hundred without being equalized and/or overcome.

Wanna see? I could go to my anime list on my computer and list off a ton of sad, depressing ones. But here, I'll just match your four and then some:

Heaven's Lost Property

Clannad

Angel Beats

Plastic Memories

Your Lie in April

  1. I don't really know what you even meant to say.

In real life, even if everything is going to shit, there will still be bright moments. I'm saying that, even in a serious setting, it's not always going to be dark.

I noticed in her champion teaser it allowed her to use flash twice in a row while she was chasing viktor. It seems like she will have a passive where her spell can be refreshed in cd? idk I could be wrong

ImpmonCute1 votes

if taliyah is edgy then those are some really low standards you got for edgy the new champ feels like pinkie pie from MLP. im starting to like her but i was iffy at first. shes cute.

Niyumi1 votes

Okay, so Taliyah isn't really edgy, but she also has no emotion or color at all -- she's blank-faced as the friggin' rocks she throws around, and maybe that was intentional, but it makes her boring.

Now, her lore on the other hand, is a bit edgy.

ImpmonCute1 votes

What do you think about Kled?

Niyumi1 votes

He's kind of a mix of edgy and not. He's hyper violent and kills anyone who walks into "his land," but at the same time he's bat shit insane and talks about brain weasels and mushroom juice. He kind of gives off a Yosemite Sam vibe which I love, but I'm goinnna have to say he's still moderately edgy.

ItsMaybelline1 votes

I don't think you know what edgy is. Edgy is Kayne. Kled is a redneck.

ItsMaybelline1 votes

How is Taliyah edgy?

first champ im actually excited for since gnar

Niyumi1 votes

Haha, well I started playing right before Ekko was teased, so I can't go back that far. :P First champ I was actually excited for was Illaoi though, and a little bit Taliyah. I love playing Ornn, but I wasn't super excited for him to come out.

In-game, not so much, though he does have some darker lines.
