In season 3, you nerfed Nasus' sustain because he was too safe

HateDaddy··39 votes·4,119 views

This was at the end of season 3, when Doran's shield had been buffed giving a massive 10hp/5, and Nasus had 14% LS at level 1 and would run Lifesteal quints and have 20% LS at level 1. On top of this, meta top laners were Shen, Zac, Vlad, Renekton, Trundle, Mundo, etc. Aside from Renekton, all of these match ups were extremely easy and couldn't really stop you from farming.

You nerfed his Lifesteal to 10% at level 1, at the time I agreed with this change. Nasus was way TOO safe. He was outsustaining hard counters like Darius and even Olaf. But then you went on to nerf D-shield and Lifesteal quints but Nasus wasn't impacted much because top lane was garbage, everything sucked so instead Of being balanced, Nasus was just made weak like the rest so he still was getting farmed. Because of this, you went on to gut his spell range on wither and remove his bonus casting ranges on his ult because you basically had the stance that Nasus would get farmed regardless so you were "enhancing" his weaknesses, aka removing other strengths he had.

It's time to do this with Veigar. Veigar is way too fucking safe and his scaling is 10x better than Nasus' is because it applies to his AP while also having access to multiplicitive scaling, something Nasus doesn't have since Nasus doesn't have AD scaling outside of Q. Nasus can't even scale his farm, Veigar can. Not to mention, Veigar has amazing ratios and can farm from 950 range, which trumps any sustain or durability Nasus has ever had because 950 range > 150 range and it's not even close.

You need to either make Veigar less safe and reduce his Q range back to 850 or you need to make him weaker in other areas. In reality, Veigar is still pretty prone to being dove until he buys Zhonyas, so there's not much that you could change there to make him weaker on that regard. Another change is nerfing ratios but he is still a Mage and mages life and die off of their ratios, so I'm not sure that's a good idea either. There is the prospect of removing the % damage his ult does of his enemies AP, but even then that's hardly an issue because at the point where his ults %AP damage is doing absurd damage, an enemy Mage likely has zhonyas and can simply use zhonyas to soak his ult and put it on CD without taking damage. So in reality, there is one option here and that's to make him less safe, reduce his Qs range back to 850. I'm fine with all the other buffs because they make him a bit more consistent and reward him for interaction, which is a good thing imo.

Some people will point out that TP is to blame but I'm going to be honest, with champions like Nasus and Veigar, their lane or their scaling, is won or lost by the first few times they back and TP back to lane. A CD nerf to TP doesn't suddenly make that any less true, so nerfing TP likely doesn't change anything in that regard, it would just mean they can't consistently TP to other lanes, which Veigar almost never will do. So even then, a nerf to TP does nothing to reduce his safety, short of removing it which isn't an option nor should it be.

Now, I already know what's coming next: "wow HateDaddy omg Nasus builds full tank and has sustain, Veigar doesn't wowzers Nasus is way better in every way you fucklord!" Yeah no, being ranged is the best defensive steroid in this game, especially when you have access to zhonyas and you have long range on spells to boot. Farming in melee range is never as safe as farming from 950 range, regardless of how you build or how much sustain you have. Nasus also doesn't have AD ratios, meaning he has no scaling for his Qs damage other than sheen procs/Trinity procs and outside of that, he can't afford to build anymore damage because he's melee and immobile, so he's not even likely to get his farmed damage off on priority targets, Veigar is. So please don't pretend that Nasus is somehow way safer because this board circlejerks that immobile mages with their long range and waveclear are inherently weak and never viable, which is hilariously wrong and stupid.

Bottom line is this, Veigar is too safe and I'm fine with the rest of his power, he just needs to be less safe in lane. Let the downvotes begin.

I agree with you OP, but unfortunately you are arguing with the board's logic of:

Veigar: Just cc him and blow him up. He's and immobile mage and easy to gank and focus in team fights

Lux: HER DAMAGE IS STUPID OP! SHE IS SUPER SAFE AND YOU CAN NEVER GET TO HER AND HAS THE SAFEST LANING PHASE! SHE CAN FARM FOR FREE WITH HER RIDICULOUS RANGE AND INFINITE MANA

Veigar: His box is easy to dodge because of the delay. If you get caught in it it's your own fault

Lux: HER BINDING IS BROKEN! IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO SIDE STEP IT AND SHE WILL INSTAGIB YOU ONCE YOU ARE TRAPPED!

Veigar: items like item 3111 item 3102 item 3001 item 3155 item 3140 item 3157 make him useless

Lux: STUPID BROKEN OP CHAMP! NO COUNTERPLAY! NOTHING YOU CAN DO!

even with the delay, veigar's box's zoning is insane.

and when it comes up, it's possibly the longest hard CC in the game (Except possibly long range Ashe arrow), and it's AOE.

Where most people think Riot went wrong is that they significantly increased the radius of her E while also making it so it could instantly detonate. Either one of those changes on their own would have been fine, but together it might be a bit much, especially in the hands of a competent Lux.

Wrong, this guy been talking about now nasus is constantly nerfed without cmpensation because "infinte scaling", while veigar gets nerfed with compenstaion , and sometimes falt out buff, despite having better and safer "infinite scaling", and how that is unfair and has been for several months

Voluug131 votes

The difference that Nasus gets to scale infinitely on an ability with low cd and build tanky. Veigar scales slightly harder but is the game's third most squishier champion. He has less defenses that an ADC, and is limited by CDs. Nasus reliably 1/2 shots people every 4s come lategame. Veigar blows someone with a ability that can be poped with multiple things and has mediocre range.

frigginmurlocs5 votes

Nasus doesn't get to build tanky, he has to build tanky in order to be amelee frontline that doesn't scale well with AD, nor does he work with items the melee carries build, so his options for building are tanky or useless, Veigar is ranged so he doesn't need to build survivability to survive in a team fight, he can get by with good positioning and peel

So, you're saying scaling with 1 ability is better than scaling with 3 abilities? Late game Veigar W/Q will 1 shot people while press R on someone else to 1 shot them, this also is taking the fact they bought stuff like QSS etc for defense. This is also done from range, where as Nasus has to be in melee to 1 shot someone with his Q and needs the game to go on twice as long.

Actually, I'm making the comparison because Nasus, an infinite scaling farm based champion like Veigar, got nerfed for his mechanic being too safe. They have the same mechanic, Veigars is better in every way. It's completely fair to make this comparison.

Saianna6 votes

Ok, their infinite scaling is similar BUT.

Veigar has to pay huge amounts of mana to farm Q. Veigar doesn't have spellvamp built in just to have it "easier" like Nasus does Veigar is squishy super-fragile glass cannon. Almost on level of anivias egg. He can easily kill someone, but then he'll most likely pay for his crimes.

Have in mind that long ranged mages have much better time harrasing Veigar. Like... Lux. Xerath. Ziggs. And those are just "easiest" picks. Countering Veigar.. Or just any champion is determined by skill.

Veigar has 950 range and the ability to dodge skill shots like any other champion. People always say "just dodge their skillshots lel" but we are going to pretend now all of a sudden you can't when it's convenient for your argument? Let's also remember Veigar has a mama regen passive, not to mention he builds mana regen on top of that. We also must remember that Veigar can kill priority targets whereas Nasus can never get to them. I would trade my Mage killing their adc or Mage in one shot with little cooldowns by the rest of our team used over Nasus getting kited/peeled to death any day of the week.

Hate to say it, but this is pretty much true. However, you treat Zhonya's hour glass like it's the answer to any and all instances where Veigar got caught and is going to take alot of damage. Popping Zhonyas doesn't automatically mean you don't die in a team fight. I will say this though, Nasus needs love. It's so easy to point at a champion with a stat that scales infinitely and say "He'll always have a late game, he's fine as he is" In harsh reality, Nasus can't win lane without the help of his jungler, and if the other jungler is smart, he'll know that, and will camp Nasus into uselessness.

Well that's why I said he's still prone to being dove, zhonyas just means he can avoid the cc that comes with it usually and flash to safety if necessary. Doesn't solve his issues, it just helps him. I don't want that to be a weakness that's enhanced, it's fair enough. I want him less safe and treated the same way Nasus was.

Veigar is my most played champion. I have more games played as Veigar than every other champion in the game combined. I always knew that the moment Rito buffed Veigar in pretty much any way, it would tip him over from the edge of "Niche, gimmicky pick" to "Snowballing monster". I never wanted Veigar to be buffed because I always enjoyed playing him despite his glaring weaknesses. Unfortunately, his most recent buffs have all but eliminated them.

I really dont understand why they made his Q passive apply to assists as well. It's so easy for Veigar to just hover at the edge of a teamfight, tossing out Q's and W's and his cage without ever committing himself, and picking up 2-3 assists with virtually zero actual fight participation. The W delay reduction made it so that buying Merc Treads in lane is no longer a viable way to avoid his damage. Combining that with the way he can stack AP faster than ever, and Veigar may not actually do any more damage that he did before, but he doesnt have to, because now he can do that damage reliably.

I agree that Veigar needs some kind of lane phase nerf to prevent him from becoming the monster that he is now. I dont think that nerfing his range is the way to go about it, though. In my opinion, one of two things needs to happen: Either they need to revert BOTH buffs that Veigar was recently given and just leave him be from now on, or give him a very heavy-handed Armor and Magic Resistance nerf. I'm talking about like cutting it in half, both in base amounts and scaling. Maybe even a health nerf if that isn't enough.

If Veigar is able to burst you down from 100-0 in less than a second, he should have to put himself at risk to do it. This would mean that his laning phase would be much more vulnerable to champions who can poke such as Viktor, Lux, Zed, or Xerath, and would allow players to at least try to stem the tide of insane AP farm that Veigar is able to get now.

They should keep Veigar's identity of the ultimate burst mage intact. He should keep his AP scaling and AP stacking. They shouldn't nerf his damage. But they should make it MUCH harder for Veigar to reach that lategame one-shot demigod status.

What I think people need to look at is how infinite scaling impacts champions' power budget

Bard potential infinite scaling with chimes, requires roaming, more or less tacked on to make auto attacking even worth using, cannot itemize to increase chime count, has minimal impact on power budget Nasus potential infinite scaling on Siphoning strike, requires last hitting from 150 range with a specific ability with a cooldown, scaling impacts one ability and does not directly impact survivability, cannot itemize to increase siphoning strike stacks massive chunk or power budget Sion potential infinite scaling on HP, requires last hitting a minion or getting a kill/ assist on champions, naturally builds HP, one ability scales with HP, medium chunk of power budget Thresh potential infinite scaling with ability power and armor, requires minions to die near thresh, damaging abilities scale with AP, no armor per level, low base armor, improves passive component of e, can build armor and AP, small chunk of power budget Veigar potential infinite scaling on ability power, requies farming from a maximum range of 950 all damaging skills benefit from AP, can build AP, small chunk of power budget

TL;DR Nasus has his kit's innate power restricted by his potential, while other infinite scaling champions do not.

Nasus can't, because his Qs bonus damage doesn't crit and LW isn't something he can feasibly build because he'd be too squishy.

Using Nasus not being meta as a ''Nerf Veigar'' argument isnt very good or valid, mind you.

You are literally comparing 2 similar mechanics in a void, and claiming Veigar is OP for scaling harder that Nasus - ignoring that Veigar has several weaknesses more that Nasus, and that they go to very different lanes.

Being ranged, against other range or a mobility assassin means jack. League of Mobility makes sure of that. He is constantly outranged in midlane, assassins can ignore his stun and pop his Ult.

Veigar is less safe that pre-rework, and then it was considered one of the most unsafe Midlaners ever.

I'm comparing the fact that Veigar is farming too safely and that's it disputable. It's simple, it's true. When Nasus was doing this, it was considered a problem, it should be with Veigar too. And you need to stop buying into low elo circlejerk here, league of mobility is offset when you have long range and a spammable aoe stun.

Voluug133 votes

''Long'' range in a lane of long ranges and gapclosers is not a big thing. And neither is a delayed AoE stun. If you are not punishing Veigar in lane phase, either by killing him with an early assassin, by poking him out of lane, or shoving his lane so he misses farm to the tower, its your fault, not the champion.

Veigar's bad match-ups far outscale his good matchups too.

Nasus having problems farming is a meta thing, dont try to shove Nasus' problems as a reason to nerf Veigar.

Bad Nasus TBH

Trundle doesn't have enough burst to ever forcefully keep you off minions, his Q is spammable but it's not enough damage to feasibly keep you out of lane or not be able to outsustain. As far as dueling trundle, just never all-in him, just whack him with Q off CD once you get to 300 bonus damage and when he ults you, disengage and wreck him when his ult is off CD. The burden is on him to ult and kill you, not the other way around, so you just play the lane reactively and outsustain him and eventually you get so farmed that you can just straight up kill him in an all-in with or without his ult. The only way trundle is good vs Nasus is in teamfights, but I would never try to teamfight 5v5 vs trundle unless I get a god tier flank or pick.

Just a point I'd like to make since I mostly agree about Veigar being too safe to farm his AP: While Siphon Strike only scales itself vs Veigar scaling AP, Veigar's entire kit has an AP ratio of 2.6, including his Ult, to Nasus gaining 3 damage on Siphon. Even with all the various AP boosts (1.35x on Deathcap, 1.05x Masteries, 1.06x Dragon), you bring his AP up 50%, and by extension he gains 3.9 damage per AP gained, on his entire rotation.

Nasus on the other hand has his +3 damage applied on every single siphon, an ability with a 4 second base CD, down to 2.4sec.

The only real issue, and the thing that pushed him over, is the AP gained on kill or assist. On kill at least required having to make sure you got the last hit, which often lead to holding onto your ult just for securing. Now that it's on assist, you're free to ult away and not worry about potentiallly lost AP.

Like I said, I agree that it's too safe for Veigar to farm, but Siphon strike being melee is made up for by applying alllll of his bonus damage every siphon. Not only that, he then gets 20% lifesteal off of it, to keep tanking.

He can't drain tank off front lines because they likely have armor and Lifesteal tanking is countered by armor, so he's not really drain tanking much. Veigars scaling is better in every way, and his Q is basically just as spammable while being able to hit more than one target at once.

Warlemming1 votes

But there's my point. His Q might be as spammable, but it has a 0.6AP ratio. Even if you hit two targets, 1.2AP. This is still nothing compared to Siphon scaling.

There's also nothing saying you have to Q the ADC, you just need to wither them. Veigar stun is too much because AOE, but it's a 2.5sec stun versus 5 second extreme slow, and wither also has a shorter CD. Max CD, you can get wither to 6 sec cd on a 5 sec disable

It also has a higher base damage by far and isn't the only that his farming mechanic scales. Considering this and it's ranged, overall, his scaling is significantly better than Nasus' is.

Nasus try's to talk up and wither a carry and he eats CC and dies. He can't simply walk up and wither and even if he does, QSS, cleanse and mikeals removes it and the next time wither is off CD to be used, Nasus is either dead and has lost or his team has won the fight and it didn't matter anyway. Both instances are clear cut windows of counterplay and weakness and while I wont argue chain withering is lame and I wish they'd do away with it to give him other strengths, let's keep in mind it's still nowhere near as good as event horizon.
