Let's compare Thresh with 3 other supports

First, let's compare Thresh with a healing support, Nami.

Nami Q can be used both to engage and peel, while thresh Q most of the times is only used as a engage. Problem is, Thresh hook is way easier to hit and more deadly, because he can use both his ult and E to make the target stay there because he can be on top of the person. While nami can use her ult and the slow of her E, her bubble is easier to dodge and her damage is lower.

Nami W is better for laning phase, if you compare to Thresh W. But ONLY in laning phase. Her W can be used to harass in lane or to heal her ADC, but the mana cost is HUGE and is only really good on 2v2 scenarios. Thresh's lantern can turn entire fights because he can save someone, or push someone to engage with him, while giving a shield and on top of that, is a huge reposition tool with a great range.

Nami E is great to add some damage and a nice slow for her ADC. But it only lasts for 3 AA and most of the times, it is better to use on a single target for maximum damage. Thresh E not only adds damage to his AA, to make him a bully support in lane, but also has a nice almost instant cast AoE slow, while also knocking up for a short time.

Only thing I think nami is superior to thresh is her ultimate.

Now, let's compare Thresh with a tank engage support, Leona

Her Q is basically a stun that resets her AA. Great for destroying wards. But she is heavily dependant on her E to make full use of her Q, while Thresh Q alone deals a lot more of things.

Her W is a nice armor/mr buff that applies passive in a area. In terms of dueling on a 2v2, her W is better, but again, only to this purpose. Anything else Thresh lantern is better

Her E is a engaging tool, that ignores minions, which is great to engage Healing supports. But not against Thresh because his E totally denies her E. And IMO, flay is better in most cases than her E.

Her R is better as a engaging tool than his R, but his R is more of a peeling ability or a ability to hold on for more time his targets. Her R stunning range is short, so to have a maximum use of it is kind of hard.

Now let's compare Thresh with a tank peeling support, Braum

Braum Q is nice to apply a stun , assuming you proc his passive, and also to harass in lane. But Thresh is able to harass with empowered AA from his E, plus his Q can not only stun, but make him able to jump on someone if it connects.

Braum W is worse than Thresh one, IMO, in pretty much any case except on a 2v2 fight.

Braum E is nearly impossible to compare with thresh E. They are good for peeling in two very different ways, but thresh E is also good for engaging.

Braum R is better than Thresh nearly always

Tl;dr Thresh may not be the best at doing one thing or another, but he does everything way too well. He needs a utility nerf

Some questionable takes on the ability by ability comparisons, but I do tend to agree that Thresh is a bit too good as a support. His utility is rather absurd. Good ol' CertainlyT and his overloaded kits...

I tried to compare than without favoring Thresh. But the only ability that I couldn't do it was his R

Well I mean in many cases you are comparing apples to oranges. That's the main issue.

not a very good comparison overall. first off, nami. she is honestly better than thresh in every way but tanking and play making. the only time thresh's q is easier to land is if you're going for a long ranged shot, otherwise her bubble is honestly easier to land (his q is fairly predictable) AND it can hit multiple people. her w is actually really good for healing and poking simultaneously, and if used properly can turn lanes to your advantage really well. as for her e, it isn't meant for poke like thresh's e, it's meant to help your carry get more damage off on fleeing targets. there's a reason she's a thresh counter.

as for leona, again a different niche. she is hardcore engage champ, basically the living embodiment of "the best defense is a good offense". she is able to keep your carry entirely immobile while amplifying her carry's damage. by the time you are no longer cc'd, you are dead or pretty low unless your support was able to keep the enemy adc off of you for that whole time. the only two thing that makes thresh better than her in any way is that he can play defensively/peel better. offensively, she is far stronger.

i have no clue honestly why you would think braum is worse than thresh. as someone who has played both, braum is worse than thresh only in peeling capabilities and catching people out. even in terms of defending his carries (peeling aside) he is better because of his e and w. thresh can only really defend his carry against melee attacks. braum is better offensively because he has more reliable cc and better defensively because of his shield's tanking capabilities.

thresh has a little of everything as far as support roles go, which people often mistake for being over powered. he's actually pretty easy to beat if you know what to do against him.

tl:dr comparing thresh's specific abilities the specific abilities of other champs isn't a good way to compare champions, and certainly isn't a basis off which to nerf a champion. Thresh's is pretty well balanced, he's just popular and a lot of are very good at him because he is always a safe pick.

The only thing I don't have is a heal! item 3302 Oh wait.... Thresh

He's ranged, so he can't execute minions meaning he needs to last-hit them properly.

Come on, let's not count that against him specifically.

You should compare to Alistar For me he is one of the best supports which only problem being that is relying on a non-intended combo and hence is a tad hard pull without practice (W+Q). Besides that he is well rounded and as thresh he won't do anything extremely well but won't do anything extremely bad either. He might not be able to pull Thresh flashy plays but overall he is a strong safe pick since he has no real hard counters.

Several nerfs to poke supports made alistar shine. But the problem is that Thresh was ALWAYS a strong pick since his release

even if you go against a good poke lane just grab coin and upgrade it and you can heal forever thanks to the item 3114 and still remain on lane. Really not much you can do against an Alistair since he can decide the flow of the lane.
