Warding Changes

Overall I'm fine with it. The biggest problem I have is that if you had intended this change to allow Supports to build what they want, then why not put Twin Shadows back into the game in the same patch?

But this change needs to be Phase 1 of a Phase 2 plan. While I didn't like being obligated to buy SS - it was an excuse, at 15 mins, when the Mid lane was feeding as to why our team was losing (support no SS, gg) - but I need warding to be a little more fun. SightStones (hereon meaning any of the new stones) need to have Hex Core like upgrades. The quest should keep going.

Quest 1 - Sightstone Quest 2 - 10% Item CDR Quest 3 - Sightstone now has Blackout. Because we're not getting a Red Ward Slot

Without additional changes and funky interplay, all you've done is limited our options. We could have always built into the existing SS model. We could have skipped SS all together. And while, yes, we'd be harassed, we had options. We now have less options. And if you say what you mean about adding other items back in, then I think from a PR standpoint you need to do it all at once. Because frankly your press has been subpar lately. The Flex queue thing, the new runes, the new lux skin that was actually the most tonedeaf thing you've done in a long time.

Anytime you do something half (we'll consider Frost Queens coming back later!) the other half never comes.

In the meantime, in a game without Frost Queens Claim...

  1. Invis champs got a buff
  2. Mobile champs got a buff (how do I find Talon now?)
  3. Mage Supports took a nerf because it was a nice way to pick up two assists without getting melted.
  4. Tank Supports got an indirect buff since they rarely took FQC and won't suffer as much
  5. All champs who built a suite of active items just lost an option

All changes to an item mean something like this, but it needs to be put out there that Twitch, Vayne, Eve, Reng, and Kha all got slightly better at ganks because of this change.

A support item with a blackout equivalent would be so busted but so good.

Period? How? I get that it can't be on the same CD as item 3147 but it should be involved if it requires a quest.

Everyone would rush it since it's basically a lvl 9 sweeper. Very broken on a class which often lags in levels.

I don't think it's like super holy cow busted but a little much. Like if you get lead early on then you get this blackout item, you might just opt for not taking red trinket and keeping yellows or going blue.

The reason this is unhealthy is because Riot said they don't want vision battles to become an economic arms race. Throwback to when Samsung White won worlds and teams would get ahead and just flood the map with vision.

They moved vision onto trinkets and used control wards instead of invis because they wanted people to have to move their vision around the map strategically and defend vision. I know that Blackout effects are not as strong as a red trinket of course. But my point is that if you have a jungle with red trinket and/or a Blackout effect of their own, you may not feel like you need red trinket. Then you have an extra blue or yellow trinket.

Judging by Riot's statements on how they wanted vision approached when the change to wards came out, and by how much complaint is already out about game pace, and how this change could potentially already speed up the pace of games. I doubt they want to add in another way for teams to get a vision monopoly when they get an early lead.

A lot of that makes sense. And I appreciate your thoughtful feedback. I think this is another Tier difference. I'm in Bronze and it's rare that wards are exploited to the point of being game-changing. To me, I think it if you're going to prevent supports from getting a ward slot, then Blackout is acceptable. Right now we're essentially forced to take it. I prefer Farsight because it allows me to get some vision going early on our side, while also punishing the enemy for not clearing.

If supports are going to be the vision role more so than the others, then we either need a red slot, or some other item with Blackout because in theory we could be building Dusk now if vision mattered that much. It's not ideal, but it's possible. Since FQC has been removed, we (in theory) have a new slot up, and AA supports (Bard, for example) might actually benefit from it.

Yeah I mean Riot is probably not going to balance the more cerebral elements of the game around Bronze as it can be kind of a free for all down there.

And I myself would like to see a slot put in for control wards. But not for standard wards.

I mean if you're a support even in Bronze I think most supports recognize that you are going to want to start a support item. So just think of it as a free sightstone! They are going to put the item use of blue and yellow support items back in, so no worries about those. And you'll be able to get into your support items earlier!

The slot for red wards makes sense cuz it's not a straight vision buff until late game when ur full slotted. But again, I think Riot is pretty content right now with the amount of vision dominance it is possible to obtain.
