your reasoning if flawed.
meta champions are determined by popularity, power, and ease along a few other niche factors.
off-meta could literally be any combination of champion, lane, item, runes, summoner spells, strategy, etc.
with those two things in mind you have a champion that statistically speaking is "better" and/or "easier"
vs
the element of surprise
a GREAT example to give is jungle karthus. prior to the end of season 8 NO ONE would let me play jungle karthus and i've been playing since season 1. If I played karthus at ALL in the jungle the people on my team would :
- Insult me in champ select
- "Go off-meta also" (pick a champion they didn't know how to play, bring a second smite and jungle overtop of me, buy nothing but tears of the goddess on garen, etc.)
- Refuse to counter an invade, leash, help take epic monsters, etc.
- Purposely allow the enemy to kill me while spamming emotes from a safe distance.
- Blame my off-meta build for their loss of lane
- Accuse me of trolling
- Ask for reports in /all chat
- Surrender early
- Allow towers to fall undefended
- AFK in fountain
- Disconnect post remake
- Brag about their 2/0/1 KDA in game review screen.
- State that off-meta picks are auto-losses and that the game stats prove it. (typically i'd be 0/5/0 or something similar)
- Report my account
- Flame me until I left and re-queued
now, however, the little positional champion recommendation tool lists karthus as a jungler and not a mid laner so if you go mid karthus instead of jungle karthus the same thing happens. WOOH!
back to my point. a single player only has as much opportunity to succeed as allowed by their team. That success is gated by the overall potential of their combined arsenal (champion, runes, summoner spells, items, lane composition, team composition, etc.) and player skill.
There are enough variables that meta doesn't mean auto win and off-meta doesn't mean auto loss. However, one does not improve his or her chances by giving up.
