Funny thing about dota 2 is

that they disable new hero/new reworked hero for at least 1 month in capitain mode (the equivalent of draft mode),so people can get used to the changes/learn how to play against him, and then, they don't have an unfun time against this hero. is there a reason for riot to not do the same? each time a new champion comes i get those people pretending to main him and then going 1/10 and rage quit after feeding, or you know you have your top laner being clueless about how laning against illaoi and pick shit picks against here/ your ADC not knowing her spells and standing in front of here and get hit by her E?

same reason about why riot disables champions during the first week of LCS

Likely Riot doesn't have the money Valve does, and can't afford to do that. Consider that, in order to boost first week sales, the IP price is increased to 7800 for newly released champions. If people couldn't play them right away in Ranked, the amount of first week RP purchases would decrease (some League players have forgotten this is a video game, and don't even consider playing anything that doesn't increase some sort of rank).

damn, that's an argument i can't do shit about it but only agree +1

TotalJerk2 votes

I seriously doubt LoL is making less than DotA2. Regardless, they'd still get sales from people who want to get a head start on practicing the champion before they get enabled on Ranked.

I believe that the RP system in place for League of Legends does generate more money than Dota, alongside the number of daily players trumping that of Dota. However Valve does still have more money than Riot because Dota isn't Valve's only game to make money.

Changeling1 votes

That and doesn't Valve own Steam? They must make hundreds of millions from that every year.

Sozan56 votes

Yes, but let's not pretend that Riot is poor.

League of Legends generated over $1.3 billion in 2014 in revenue through in-game micro transactions, according to SuperData Research CEO Joost van Dreunen.

Source, 2, 3, 4

They are definitely not poor, and we, as players, are too lenient on Riot Games with their slow updates (we wait (or were waiting) literally years for reworks like Sion, Poppy, Yorick or Evelynn), half-assed updates (VUs didn't update skin splashes until Poppy - which I hope is a going to be standard now), lack of simple features FOR YEARS (Mastery/Rune page interface needs complete rehaul, we still don't have the promised replays function etc) and I could go on for longer but that's not the point here. They really can afford to do this - if they wanted to.

Also, for some reason there is a topic on HOT that says we're too hard on Riot, which I find to be amusing - it could be true 4-5 years ago, but now?

Bolwinkel2 votes

Just want to point out, that that is revenue. Not profit. that is all.

Aotae1 votes

http://www.esportsearnings.com/tournaments if you look at this you can see the difference of prize pools from dota to league. So league has more Revenue But Dota gets/puts more money into their tournaments making them take all of the top 5 places in tournament money. And tbh I dont even wanna mention that SMITE somehow got more money in their tourneys than league.

TotalJerk1 votes

The fans payed for a lot of that with stuff like the Compendium. Also competitive DotA 2 is a lot more driven by direct profit while Rito mostly runs the LCS to advertise the game.

Aotae1 votes

Thats What I mean as you can see Dota is making a ton a profit but instead of making it profit they decide to put into tourneys and this isnt counting the steam market and the prize money in the internationals is enough Advertisement think about it if you heard that 18 billion dollars was being given out for playing and winning a game don't you think that word would get out ?

Magister Ragun1 votes

Sure League makes more than Dota, but valve has more money than god, so Dota doesn't have to even think about profit right now.

It would be anti-fun to prevent people from taking the champ into a ranked mode. However they often get banned anyway so they don't really need to take any initiative when it comes to limiting the access to a champion.

There's also ranked only players, which some happen to be high elo players and giving them the chance to play the champ in ranked gives these higher level players some time to see what they can do with them.

Honestly there's been people asking for the opposite where the champion is not able to be banned while they are released for their first week or two.

ranked mode isn't about testing champions, but winning

VaporeonKun3 votes

You forget that you learn more in ranked than you do in normals. Normals are just the basis of your champ and what they can accomplish. However, Ranked allows you see what you can do with your champion at it's full potential.

My point still stands. There are ranked only players, of which tend to be the higher elo players, on top of the fact Riot doesn't believe it would be fair to prevent people from using a champion in certain modes. The only way a champion is disabled in ranked (or in any mode for that matter) is if they quality for something unhealthy... Though this doesn't always happen, it's still considered regardless.

How do you learn more in ranked than normals, its the same damn game. Also my normal elo puts me against golds and plats, with a rare diamond mixed in, meanwhile my ranked elo is bronze. So obviously I'm gonna learn a hell of a lot more from a gold than a bronze....

It has a draft phase compared to blind pick (unless you're doing normals draft which almost no one does) Everyone plays more seriously. You get more goofy stuff in normals because people don't care if their normal MMR drops.

You say that, but you don't act like you mean it. Unless you are picking the n1 win rate champion every time, shutting off music and any distraction while you are playing, you are not doing your utmost to win.

Besides, picking a new champion is possibly the logical thing to do, since you know more about the new champion than most of your opponents. I very rarely see someone enter a ranked game and feed horribly with a new champion release. On the other hand, I see a ton of players absolutely stomp and get free wins because their opponent, at least for the first 10 minutes, has no idea what's going on.

Jari5 votes

Let me put it like this. Who's fun is more important? Your fun by playing a new champ you don't know in ranked play, or the four teamates who have to deal with your feeding ass because you don't know the champ.

Go play in Normals. In ranked you're legit taking LP from people.

Don't try to use utilitarian logic in an agonistic setting. It will lead to the conclusion you should lose in order to make the 5 people happy.

Jari4 votes

Actually, intentionally harming your team by Riot's definition ruins it for the 5 enemies too, since they don't get the have the enjoyment from it. It feels better to earn your win than to have it just handed to you because of one guy on the enemy team. So in conclusion, your fun vs 9 others using Riot's system that's put in. I think the other 9 are more important.

Some would. Some wouldn't. You would see a improvement but realistically expecting people to spam enough games in a queue they don't prefer to get a role and champion that's popular on release I think is tougher than you expect. Haven't played dota2 and seen it working. Right now though you don't have to play ranked or draft. Go play blind when a champ is released and problem is solved for you. Second mmr is per queue. So you will now have challenger and masters players having to normal blind queue to play a new champ. Since they don't play normals probably ever they will have like gold mmr and are going to dumpster games. Tldr If new champs ruin your games. Play blind and wait. But there are people who only play draft and ranked there's no reason to delay a champion a month for them.

Why should we bar ourselves from a mode dedicated to winning so that people can learn (and lose) in it?

Just isn't true.

Captains mode is very dependent on the captain, and with solo q attitude most people would rather avoid that, dota ranked is mostly all-pick,and frankly that's because they outright refuse to give a better alternative(even if people have been asking for one for ages),so not only are they basically not banned from ranked, you can't ban them at all.

I mean dota 2 has things which are better(in particular no retarded winrate balancing, and they don't play favorites in balancing),but their ranked que types and the refusal to let people surrender are retarded.

you're acting like i said dota 2 is perfect, i didn't.

about capitains mode, i said it's the equivalent, sure it's different, but there is all pick which allows you to pick your hero instantly like blind pick and capitains mode with bans
