You know what bugs me?

When a champion loses some stats but then passively gains them back via their abilities. Olaf passively gets 20 armour on his ult? Better lower his base armour just a bit to balance it. Kog'Maw/Twisted Fate gets bonus attack speed on his Q/E? Better lower his attack speed growth just to balance it. Thresh gets infinitely scaling armour? Let's completely gut his base armour and remove his armour growth. Tryndamere/Master Yi gets AD on his Q/E? Let's nerf his base AD just to balance it. Actually, let's buff it again, since Melee carries are in a bad spot during this meta. Tristana gets bonus attack range per level on her passive? Let's nerf her base attack range, then. Just to balance it.

Like, what's the point? I get that it does indeed change things a bit for the better if you choose to max the respective ability first (when possible), but that just makes your other, more viable abilities all the less effective in return.

The idea is with abilities with cooldowns or otherwise conditional power, it creates a greater contrast.

Tristana has a ton of attack speed when Q is up, but when it's down she's noticeably weaker.

Olaf is naturally resiliant, but he sacrifices that to ignore cc.

Sion's hp scales up as the game goes on, but if he falls behind on farm he has less hp than the average tank.

But with Kog it's just to make him level Q. Otherwise even more of his kit is focused around pressing W.

Olaf is naturally resilient, but he sacrifices that to ignore cc and mow down everyone he touches.

FTFY (Also My computer's spell check has it resilient, not resiliant, so fixed that too)

Janna, has the lowest movement speed in the game (okay by 5 but still) because she has a movement speed passive. Why not give her the same as the other enchanters and just lower the passive a bit?

Before this patch, Kalista had the highest base attack damage but a 90% modifier on it... so she had the same base attack damage as everyone else basically.

Soraka has 2.5 base HP5, the lowest by 2. For a champ that gives HP and mana in her heal, seems a little harsh, is that all because of her Q?

These are based on level 1 btw.

.

On a side note, while looking up base stats, I noticed Kayn has one of the highest base manas and high MP5 and decent growths of both stats, similar to enchanters.

At least for Kalista, I can easily see that being to give her slightly more power to her E and Q without making her autoattack trades ridiculous, but it's harder to really get for some of the others.

Something something -5 AD.

As others have pointed out, pulling stats out of a champion's bases, and moving them onto abilities, generally exists to create a better contrast. If the stat is on a temporary steroid, e.g. on Olaf or Trist, it's generally there to contrast moments of high power with moments of relative weakness. In the case of permanent stats, such as on Thresh, Sion, Kindred, etc., they exist to make a portion of the champion's power more skill-dependent and interactive: a Sion who plays really well will have a lot more health than a Sion who doesn't spent time to farm, for example, and similarly that champion can also have more or less health throughout the game depending on how well his opponents pressured him. In the case of permanent stat gains per rank, as is the case for Kog's Q, TF's E, etc., it's just there to push players to sink points into the ability, and often to give them a more pronounced power curve at a certain stage in a match. I can agree that sometimes these gains feel unnecessary (Thresh in particular has a compensatory system to make sure he gets to catch up on souls very easily if he's ever behind), but the mechanics behind them do make a unique contribution to the game, and so are worth implementing on some kits.

How do you feel about champions like Vi and Varus that need to slow themselves in order to cast to spell?

Ok sure but why1 votes

More balanced than punishing Blitzcrank for wanting to move faster for a little bit

revliledpembroke1 votes

I mean, you said "better nerf x to balance it." Doesn't that already answer your question? Balance?

Ok sure but why1 votes

Yea. But why include y in the first place if they're just gonna nerf x because of it?

revliledpembroke1 votes

Because if Tristana had a high attack speed and then had an attack speed boost on top of that, she'd be incredibly oppressive?

Ok sure but why1 votes

I ain't talking about actives! Actives are actual abilities that people use. That would be like saying, "Oh, Miss Fortune's abilities do too much damage? Let's give her the lowest base AD in the entire game!" That would be just silly.
