WHY does Gangplank...

Have both MS steroid and Slow at the same time?

The dude's barrels are on a very low CD, he's always running around because of them, always zoning you and when you try to CS he just massively slows you while drifting around like a fucking truck. I don't understand why should he have BOTH of the latter to make it impossible to chase him. and hey, you managed to CC him? "W" to not only heal, but to remove the CC.

Today was the first day in a very long time I play toplane, and lucky me I was placed against Gangplank I'm not a toplane main, nor have interest in playing top just to be beat by a full tank or ranged champs who even scale better than my. Now I know why a lot of people complain about this champ. Does he even have mana problems? he keeps spamming Q like he's resourceless, builds item 3057 and starts dealing a low of damage. you're building armor? no problem, Barrels ignore 40% of your armor.

Gangplank is overloaded. How can he sit on 16% pick ratio and be the highest win ratio for so long?

Kayle Gnar Vladimir are all pretty huge issues for GP to deal with in lane and almost auto-wins if you know the matchup well enough.

The barrel game can be rough if you don't understand the timing on them, but if you do, then it's not impossible to play around even as a melee. I've had some matchups where the person took out a good amount of my barrels before I could, unless they were the surprise ones linked to barrels in brush or something.

GP can be abused and he does have some clear weaknesses, and a lot of his strengths right now come from klepto/bandit more than anything. I've been playing a lot of him so I know where my windows of power are when playing against him. Barrels aren't infinite, you can time their explosions really easily, W has a long, easily-abused CD, and after he Qs he has a moment where you can go in for a quick trade and then walk out with the better end of it.

Q is GP's only reliable trading tool and if he uses it to CS, that's no longer an option. Because Barrels can be played around and have such an obvious timer of when they can be used, this window of opportunity becomes even more apparent.

His difficulty used to be much higher than it is now, but it's come to be much more forgiving with how easy it is to farm early gold with klepto/bandit.

Those champions are cancer of the top lane not allowing any meele to do anything. And gp has no time where you.can trade.he has true DMG which already is huge in outtrading you plus his Q cd is so low by the time you end the trade he will q you on your way to disengage which turns into lost trade.

Except they CAN be beaten by melee.

Kayle's biggest counter matchups are Kled, Jax, and Akali. She also loses to Riven, Nasus, Yasuo, Camille, Maokai, Pantheon, and Yorick, most of these being VERY HEAVY losses.

Gnar is beaten by Riven, Fiora, Nasus, Camille, Illaoi, Shen, Maokai, Irelia, Malphite, Kled, Akali, Poppy, Olaf, and Wukong, all very heavily.

Vladimir is beaten by Riven, Darius, Nasus, Yasuo, Illaoi, Irelia, Sion, Cho'gath, Kled, Mundo, Akali, Yorick, Wukong, Aatrox, and even friggen TK right now.

Just because they may have been problems in the past, or they have capability to massively abuse you, doesn't mean this will happen 100% of the time.

Also, you will lose trades to GP if you go in for bad ones. Learn his windows of power and capitalize on them yourself and you win. Yes, he will counter plenty of champs, but you can work around a lot of his barrel game.

Wrong

Not wrong, those matchups are statistically all losses for Gnar and Vlad.

There's a difference between losing lane and just losing the game due to other factors in how said champs interact with the game. Juggernauts make Vlad's life hell in teamfights, where he wants to wade in and get shit done. They can't do anything to him in lane though.

I mean anyone can be beaten by anyone if you can play a champ

First its not counterplay. Its counterpick at best and doesnt even prove anything since most of the champions you mentioned are as busted and broken to obolivion right now as GP is. GP has no windows of power. He has constant poke from Q that also applies on hit effects which completely brakes him once he gets sheen. He can stand on a barell all day and you cant even come close to him because he slows you, pierce through your armor (so building defensive is also not an option) and on top of it he gets huge movement speed boost which is amplified for no reason from phage passive (becaue barrel counts as killed unit). You can't come close to him. And if you actually do and for some reason didnt put the barrel up (very balanced non existant cooldown and 0 mana cost on barrels) he uses W to heal up and remove any CC you use to stop him. Not mentioning his amazing global ult that is literally "I lose lane but let me grab that juicy assists and kills for free" button. And since klepto is a thing even if I hard win my lane and destroy him he has 2,5 item when behind when I have 3 items when ahead (with one of his item being the most expensive item in the game trinity ofrce). Very balanced. Very nice gameplay that allows to shut down since he is a scaling champion #sarcasm (Not like he wasnt never behind since he gets additional gold from Q anyway)

Kayle at least lets melees do things.

...GP is honestly pretty silly for a lot of the same reasons why Vayne is silly. His weakness is his "weak early game", but he's inherently such a safe champion that it's hard to abuse him.

Idk why you got downvoted lol. It’s incredibly hard to shut down a GP especially with klepto. He’s similar to Nasus in the way that even if you bully him early game, he will come back incredibly hard. Plus the way 99% of GP’s play makes him super safe in lane. Stand behind a barrel and pop it if the enemy tries to approach while CC’ing with other barrels and Q. It makes it incredibly hard to punish him.

Gangplanks barrels can be destroyed by you. his W has a long CD and a large mana cost and he doesn't do well in straight up duels. His barrels CD is actually pretty hefty as well, especially early game.

Play around his windows.

Because Gangplank lacks the dashes/mobility of other champions.

GP problem is Klepto + Resolve. He's supposed to be a squishy late game carry but now he's more like a lane bully with decent scaling. Just constantly poke and harass with Q in lane and get free gold, health pots, nana pots, vision control, and damage. Resolve Secondary makes him way too tanky in lane. The free 160 hp he gets makes him nearly unkillable when combined with the safety of his kit, and his traditional counters are weak. I miss when GP has a mediocre/bad lane phase but built crit items and scaled up around the map. Now he just wins lane and builds bruiser.

Lauchmelder1 votes

GPs actual problem is that his counters are weak as fuck.

If he can go up against a tank who can't solokill him but who is resistent enough to not be bothered by the Q spam then OF COURSE he's gonna be strong.

Once bruisers get an actually viable keystone he will drop again.

If you look at melee champions, the near-totality of them have some form of dash or movement speed bonus, including champions that are supposed to be immobile (Mordekaiser can give himself 75 bonus movement speed with his W, for example). This isn't because all of these champions are intended to specialize in mobility, but because melee champions are expected require more mobility than the base movement speed they've been given just to be able to function. This is why Gangplank, who by all rights should not need mobility, essentially has a constant 30% increased movement speed. It definitely is one bit of mechanical load he should not need, but the issue is that mobility's basically a given on a melee kit, on top of whichever other mechanics they have, which is why so many melee champions appear overloaded as a result of it too.
