Deathcap's combine cost + 3 components + lategame nature feels miserable and needs change.

There is no other item that is even close to as bad as Deathcap in terms of difficulty to complete. It's an item that benefits you most later on, when you're likely to have only 1-2 inventory spaces, and yet you have to sit on 3 items and then collect 1265 gold, or get even more gold at once for the combine cost if you don't have the inventory space for the components. It's an anti-powerspike simply because Deathcap's build order is badly designed and you're forced to sit on 60+ AP worth of gold. It was a problem years ago and it only got worse when the price increased and it became even more essential because other AP items have been nerfed horribly to where mages are starved for AP. It's bad enough that mages already have so many core items that are basically impossible to replace: T2 boots, Zhonya's to not explode, void staff for pen, a mana/cdr item, and deathcap to actually deal damage doesn't leave much freedom for builds.

I would be fine with any change, even if it doesn't make sense thematically or seems thrown together, because right now building a deathcap simply sucks. It could be 2 needlessly large rods, or adding totally new items. AD items such as cleaver and ghostblade were updated to have newer components multiple times, so I don't see why the most expensive item in the game hasn't received this treatment.

Additionally, Deathcap had a totally uncalled for nerf in 5.22, raising the cost from 3,500 to 3,800 for no reason. Now more than ever, this nerf needs to be reverted because more than 100 AP has been removed from most final builds with Luden's, Zhonya's, and Rylai's nerfs. Here's a quickly thrown together concept:

Hateful Hat 1,200g (40 AP + 10% AP)

  • 1,200g upgrades into Spooky Sombrero (80 AP + 20% AP)
  • 1,200g upgrades into Rabadon's Deathcap (120 AP + 35% AP)

This way it costs 100g more than it did pre-5.22 nerf and it only takes up one inventory space to build.

I agree with the post but

Spooky Sombrero XD LOL

That item sounds kinda busted, depending on the price, that would just be mini rabadons. Buy that and wait for something else. What do you think about this build path. item 1058 item 1058 >item 3089 pogchamp

I agree. The nerfs were BS and the build order has long been an issue. It might almost be better off like ROA or tear, where you have to stack it before it unlocks it's final form.

There is no other item that is even close to as bad as Deathcap in terms of difficulty to complete.

item 3072 is pretty shit too. Has about the same combine cost as well (1100g)

item 3071 build path is complete shit now and you're forced to sit on 15 AD until the item is complete for 40 AD (900g combine cost)

item 3147 also pretty shit

item 3022 shit build path

item 3285 shit build path

item 3053 shit build path

there are a lot more items than Deathcap with shitty build paths

This isnt a good comparison imo. Deathcap feels like shit to build because you get no passives until its finished. Every item you listed has some form of passive boost before its a complete item. item 3072 still get some lifesteal with your damage item 3071 still get that phage passive and some CDR item 3147 penetration and out of combat movement speed item 3285 movement speed(weak but still a passive) item 3053 get some stacking health before its done and then finally item 3089 nothing until its completed. Im not trying to sound biased because I cant remember the last time buying deathcap but deathcap is just extremely underwhelming until its completed. 3 item slots and nothing to show for it except AP.

Lmao what are you expecting? Deathcap is absolutely nothing but raw AP. Its build path is absolutely nothing but raw AP.

It makes perfect sense.

Were you expecting a item 3113 or something in its build path even though it doesnt give any move speed when competed? Or a item 3108 when it gives no CDR? How about a item 3145 when it would lose that too?

Actually Rabadon's as a 5th or 6th item is common for a lot of mages. I don't know what game you're playing, the AP it gives is a great powerspike to let you peak around 600-700 AP lategame.

What? DC is largely considered a last buy, becuase it doesn't provide some of the necessary things most mages need, like cooldown, Liandry's, a defensive item like zhonya's, etc. It is almost always a 5th or 6th buy. OCCASIONALLY a third item if you're snowballing super hard.

I disagree, I think it should almost always be 3rd item (counting boots), because you open with item 3165 or item 3027 and get what you actually need for laning+early-mid game from that, and that gives enough AP that item 3089 is now adequately cost efficient (no opportunity cost in terms of offensive power while building it relative to alternatives). As soon as item 3089 is complete, all gold you have spent and will spend in the future towards AP now gives you 35% more return on investment than it otherwise would, which is why you don't want to delay item 3089 longer than you need to (it's an awful first item because it isn't cost efficient, relative to other full items, until you have about 150 AP from other sources; which between runes and masteries and the mentioned first buys you will approximately have).

I disagree. A standard build is item 3165 or item 3027 , followed by item 3151 or item 3285 , followed by item 3135 . Couple all this with the fact that item 3102 is broken now, item 3116 is still relevant, and item 3157 is sometimes necessary, and the fact is, DC is largely left out as all but a luxury 6th item.

I see a lot of people building this way, but that doesn't make it better (just more popular). The opportunity cost of this kind of buildpath is that you don't hit nearly as strong a power-spike during midgame, where mages as an archetype are at their relative strongest and thus most able to influence the outcome of the game.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree, but I appreciate the civilized conversation!

I used to build it sooner, but Void Staff is too important for you to delay it after DC since AD champs got so many new MR items.

I honestly just delay DC until 4th non-boot item these days and hope the game ends before I have to start building it.
