It's getting harder to be a support

Heckin Support··37 votes·2,634 views

It's not just me right?

I've been a support main since season 3 rocking it hard with Sona, Lulu, Soraka, Janna, and Nami. But the it just feels like you don't have much of an influence in the game. I really wish Riot would just admit the last support update didn't fix shit and redo it.

I've been playing support since the beginning of this game and my actual role in the game has kept decreasing more and more. Where ADC have been getting all the spotlight and amazing kits (lucian, vayne), I feel like whatever I do, I'm not gonna do a real impact.

Some friend told me about the 30/30/40 rule. You lose and win 30 % of your games because of others and nothing you do will change that. 40 % is determined by your skill level.

IN THEORY.

As a support, the real numbers are more like 40/40/20.

Let's be real. Carries can carry. And they can make others carry too, by keeping them safe by example.

But supports CANNOT carry. They can only hopefully make others carry.

That's why supports are getting meaningless with every swissknife champions Riot releases to line their pockets.

PalPlays1 votes

Actually I feel like you can carry on Janna, Soraka, or Karma. By preventing your carry from dying and providing a ton of utility, you can essentially negate the enemy's damage or engage. Look at the match history of any good Soraka player, for example, and you will probably see that their total healing was on par or higher than the highest total damage of the enemy's carry. As a healer, you basically reduced their damage to 0 in addition to providing utility in the form of an AoE silence and resistances from Windspeaker's. Carries lack that utility, so that Soraka player essentially removed them from the game.

I think the popular point people try to make is that supports can't end a game.

A good support can turn a bad carry into a decent one. A good one into a god. But if that carry (ADC, APC, Darius, Master Yi, whoever), confuses a Janna ult for an initiation and goes back in. There's nothing you can go. If you get a doubleFroggen wanna-be trying to 1v5 with Vayne at level 3. There's nothing you can do. If you get a Draven who can't attack-move. There's nothing you can do. Because supports act as a force multiplier, them being useless makes you useless in turn.

On the other hand. A bad support just makes the game harder for the carry. The carry will still scale into damage and get their steroids. . . Eventually. They can still chunk towers. They can still end games.

So yes. Supports are invaluable. But they inherently need allies to maximize their potential. Where their allies don't necessarily need them.

lategame as support taric, I feel more or less inconsequential when my stun is on cooldown

Just do a more selfish Taric build, base on 40% CDR w/ Iceborn + F<3

You mean playing UTILITY supports is getting harder...Blitz, Thresh, Leona, Trundle are all still doing amazing

Dengeden7 votes

Your builds are really 1-dimensional and the supports' biggest strength has always been their item flexibility after sightstone.

Fanny Forecast8 votes

This. This x1000. I see so many people building the same thing game after game (not just supports) to the point of it's detrimental and is the only thing that lost them games sometimes.

Playing Soraka with Jhin? Ardent and Zekes should be hardcore rushed, but I've seen Sorakas grab Morellos (???) and other higher AP items.

Playing Nami with Vayne? Rush Ardent so your vayne can do more vayne things.

Playing Janna and you have 4 assists by the 10 min mark? Grab a fuckin Dark Seal and make it into Mejais later!

Mhihnj2 votes

when i see people building life steal, i do tell my team to grab a mortal reminder and the other ap item. But then i need to buy it anyway

TotalJerk2 votes

Not really. It almost always consists of stocking up on dirt cheap shit that your champion can't personally appreciate much, but benefits everyone else.

It isn't getting harder, it already died off XD

I've been a supp forever. Something about helping out others was really rewarding. But now, you are punished and the community seems to have gotten a bit more snobby with the way they want a specific supp if not they dodge. I'd rather they not go Jhin or Vayne in low elo, but "you do you" and they can go ahead and use them. But when i want to "me do me" as supp it just makes people flip out.

Yes there are Supp champs that are still doing great, BUT the overall "Fun" factor has long been since dead since Pre-Season 6.

Magnum Mack3 votes

This EVERY time. I keep asking people to not play Kog or Vayne low level because they are so easy to exploit early game by someone who simply thinks about the match up more than the relative low elo player.

I pick blitzcrank and you pick jhin. You do understand your adc pick has no escape and relies on his range, correct? You do understand that blitzcrank grabs enemies and brings them relatively closer, right? Oh hey, I'm gonna play Zyra or Morgana. Maybe you'll wanna play an adc that will get in and take advantage of my poke, harass and snares/stuns like Ezreal or Lucian can. Oh, you're gonna farm it out as sivir or kog... I see. that's fine too. Except I'm lieing.

Supports always play off their adc's. I kinda wish an adc would show acceptance for how much utility a support can provide to the right adc.

GenghisEmo3 votes

Yep, there are some Supps that are just better with certain Marksmen, and those i like to go for. For example, Voli can still work as Supp, but ppl flip out. Which makes me sad. They need only think about the type of ADC they will play and Voli can compliment some.

While other times the OP Supps are better since it compliments the "protect a carry" comp, or helps enable say Yasuo or Gangplank, to name a few.

Ariel the Cruel1 votes

Sadly. This is why I always ask the ADC's preference beforehand. Since half the time they don't use pick intent anyways, I need something to go off of.

The last support update hurt Sona so much. Her kit relies so heavily on ap, probably more so than any other support, and yet ap support itemization sucks so bad.

And without how big the large, engage tanks are right now. Nami is 100% screwed since she has no escape, shes all pick oriented.

sona can kill a botlane combo just cause the amount of damage she does if no one challeges her tbh

QjTHqo3RTq3 votes

"If no one pays attention to her, she does damage." Isn't that EVERY champion?

sterlingduchess1 votes

That's the problem. Her kit is so AP reliant that building full AP is almost a necessity to be relevant at this point. If she doesn't her heals are basically negligible, her speed boosts are lackluster and her slows are an annoyance at best. When champion builds are boxed into max AP, of course her Q and R combo will one hit some champions. Whereas if her heal scaled off of her max health and her slow/speed boost scaled off of bonus move speed or tenacity or some other logical combination, then there wouldn't be just one stat to consider and she wouldn't have to build full AP mage. Honestly there are a lot of things that could be done with Sona, but most likely we wont see them for a while because most of the effort and resources for champ buffs/nerfs are spent on changes that will impact the meta, to get it closer to balance. Sona isn't a problem in the large picture because other champs that serve the mage support role are actually decent picks in the game right now and there isn't a compelling enough reason to jump into a complete rework of her kit(which imo is what she really needs at this point).

LankPants1 votes

Man, if no-one challenged me while I split top and took the Nexus I'd win every game.

Odinakos1 votes

Nami is pretty strong at a safe lane. She fills a similar role to Janna, she has less peel but more trade and bully potential. I actually like how she is balanced atm because she is the best for the job she is designed for(safety and bullying) but not strong at everything. For example, Cait is already too safe and Jaina makes it overkill (exept for more than 2 hardcore divers) so Nami helps her bully the lane a lot. That combo is the Teemo of bot lane and i can confirm that because i have been on both sides.

The only that irritates me is that her Ult can be blocked by windwall. I hate to pick her early for that reason especialy that now Braum is a dominant pick(along with wanting to see the enemy comp).

As for Sona... her kit has been problematic from release. Every time she was viable she was overbearing at least. I have given up hope on her. Its a shame since i bought her on release and its the champ that got me into support role. Thought i understand her problems.

I actually feel like TANK supports don't really do anything anymore. With the meta of on-hit champs like Udyr, Yi, or Shyvana dominating solo queue, I don't feel like Nautilus or Alistar do much anymore besides get shredded.

At least tank supports get to wait until midgame to get shredded. Squishy supports can get 100-0'd at level 2.

doombotMECHA1 votes

Ali NEEDS a rework. like he honestly is a q-w bot these days like once they're down you can.... become harder to kill? but like, barring stat junkies, who gives a sh*t about you, anyway?

Athenes Lulu2 votes

The poke/sustain meta has been long gone ever since tank supports can get actual items.

I mean think of it this way, why pick squishy shits when the tankier ones does almost everything better? Why pick "no damage" shits when "tons of damage" shits does almost everything better as well?

Don't get me wrong, they're not at all bad (Lulu/Nami with any competent ADC can make botlane a hell of a nightmare). Because of such meta shifts, they just became more team-reliant, meaning if that teammate has absolutely no idea on how X works, X will have a very hard time getting anything done.

As long as supports will have reduced gold compared to that of their teammates (which probably won't change because they don't farm nor get kills), they won't have enough gold for any form of items/scalings (defensive scalings count too), and therefore won't have much impact alone.

######Also delete utility scalings BASED OFF AP please that shit should've been in the trash can long ago

Sire Hippington2 votes

i think a huge thing for that is the limited warding one can do as support. Befor s6, you could really peovide alot vision controll as sup, now you only have 3 wards per back, makeing it really hard to move the line of vision acording to the gamestate without constantly recalling.

A Miss Fortune2 votes

I feel like outside of the top tier supports, the rest of the supports simply don't benefit their team that much to be a desirable role. Most supports are usually only seen in specific matchups in which they excel in, while a small handful of supports are consistently played game after game. The diversity of the support role sucks and the overall feel/necessity of supports sucks. It feels like supports do nothing aside from secure your team a lead after they already picked up a lead.

GanksOfLiam2 votes

Your right, Support Is getting harder, well in my opinion. I was a support main threw season 4 to season 6. But now I am starting to think support is not worth playing in ranked. I'm stuck in bronze 5 and every game I can never save the adc without blowing both summoners. I would try to help them get a kill and they would try to go ham and dive a tower... I was starting to get sick of it. So Since the champion mastery update, I have been going for Jungle mid or top. Trying to get better as support when I'm forced to bot I can do, but a lot of the time the items I am recommended to buy are shit I really think it would be the best thing ever if they were to buff supports again.

Rendarkan2 votes

You can do everything within your power to set up the perfect team fight and ace the enemy...

But sadly your team is full of morons and don't know how to engage properly.

Soraka has a 55.25% winrate at #1 Janna has a 53.38% winrate at #2 Sona has a 52.33% winrate at #5 Nami has a 51.99% winrate at #6 Lulu is the only bad support out of the ones you mentioned. 47.2% winrate

Not trying to be rude but if you're not influencing the game or winning maybe you're not as good at that champ as you might believe...? It's all about how you play really. I main Bard and right now he has a 48.8% winrate but I typically win more than 60% of my games with him.

Then you got people saying that big tanky supports are crowding the utility AP supports out... yet there's only 3 with a positive win rate and they're all way below the ones you listed except for Blitz at 3rd.

I'm a support main and I feel WAY less influential with the big tanky dorks. They're just really not that tanky feeling to be honest.

Oh... uh, I was talking in the jungle or mid lane, in order of appearance, if I do support, I do Thresh, I play the occasional normal in order to keep in touch but... meh

Fanny Forecast1 votes

Eh, I think it's a bit better compared to last season. It might be me getting better at supports, it might be my adcs getting better (I'm out of school now, was in school last season so I during the "school children" times compared to now, I play during the adult times), and it might just be the fact that I'm getting used to having to do a lot more than I should as a support and I do it.

I main Nami right now, have excellent scores in most of my games. Most of the popular ADCs right now combo REALLY well with her (Jhin, Graves, Lucian, etc.) because they love her E and they all can either kill the enemy from a single bubble being landed or can extend the cc till they die. Her kit is a bit meh, numbers aren't the best, but neither are Jannas.

Janna's only redeeming factor that makes her played is the fact that her shield gives damage. If riot removed the damage, theyd remove a huge part of her power, and make her a peel-bot only. A peel bot that can barely engage.

But yeah, it's probably just me getting better and playing with the adults, but I've noticed I have a bigger impact as champs like Nami, Janna, and Morgana than I did last season with them.

I'm gonna have to disagree, but I feel like support itemization needs an overhaul. It's just totally full of items that are unsatisfying to use and are almost entirely items that might as well read "fuck yourself over for the greater good" because of how garbage the items are without team boost.

LupusAkira1 votes

A fair point really. The "support" items should have a greater active affect on the game. So that support players are made more valuable.

morgana main season 5 as supp (1-2 times mid only) this season i dont go supp so so much cause adc sucks zed op towers are nerfed and we get dived...so i go for mid/jg/top and less supp but its still in my pool..actually supps have to get more work by riot

Only just recently started League, but it does seem extremely hard. I've had so many games where I harass the enemy bot lane so hard that they are losing cs or dying when they go in for it, and yet we still end up losing due to other lanes losing or to people getting caught out.

Had a game last night where Draven was bot and three enemy members were collapsing on him. I, as Lulu, managed to get in range near the end of the fight, threw out shield, whimsy, exhaust, and ult and he came out with a triple kill and 200 health. It was amazing but we ended up losing the game anyway cause my team mates seemed to figure they were so fed that chasing that low health enemy was a fine idea until his whole team came to his aid. I can understand that a little, but unless you get an objective for your death, it's normally not worth it.

I'm serious so tired of getting baron and watching 2 team mates dive the enemy base only to die and then have another teammate get picked off when they went to help. Or having a split pushing team who decides we should teamfight vs the malphite, alistar, gangplank, miss fortune combo.

I have no problem supporting a carry, but then they need to do their job as well.

BD MIND TAP1 votes

I think you have a lower influence over the game in lower ello just because the adc's mid and top grab a lower % of the cs ,even in a Potato free farm lane. I think as soon as you get in a little higher ello where most people can grab majority easy cs the % of games you can win as support will go up.

Jahsuo Onfroy1 votes

All your supports are supports that carry by being carried by the people you enhance, of course you will have lower impact since you can't place infinite wards anymore.

I think the issue is more the influx of shitty players who want to take up the "carry" role but have no clue how to fullfill it
