Why You Should Put Time Into Ganking Top Lane Early On.

Hello Junglers! This is a post just for you because in my last 20 games 2 things have happened that have a huge impact on how the game unfolds.

  • My Jungler ganks my lane often getting me ahead, I carry that lead into dominating my opponent then going to different lanes.

  • My Jungler ganks once and then never again, or never ganks at all, and I either don't dominate my lane as hard or the enemy jungler ganks and I straight up lose.

Now I know that the second one looks like my fault, and to a small degree it is, but at the same time it isn't. Technically speaking we are suppose to be locked in a stalemate (assuming of course no one is making mistakes and respecting the others abilities) and that is where the Jungler comes in to make the difference. Not always the case obviously with champion match-ups and skill of each player making the largest of impacts, but that is why i took the time to spell out "technically".

So what happens when you gank my lane early on, like level 2-3? Well hopefully we kill the enemy laner, depending on how much HP I have I can stay in lane and continue to farm, gaining a lead over my opponent. At this point the enemy laner is forced into using their Teleport or lose out on several waves of Gold and Experience. You, the jungler, can either go off to farm, gank, OR you can wait for them to Teleport and gank them immediately again. Now if you decide not to stay, that is ok too as long as you come to gank again at least 1-2 more times. What happens is, with my lead, I can pressure them and possibly bully them out of lane. Whether I force them out of lane or not isn't a big deal because I still have teleport and can keep up the pressure but with better items and at least 2 levels on them.

So with 1, maybe 2, ganks I have basically won the lane assuming no outside forces interfere in our 1v1. You as the Jungler are now basically free to go to any lane at this point and not have to worry about Top lane anymore, although I highly recommend ganking again, possibly getting a kill or a few assists. Maybe come up for Rift, but other than that, Mid and Bot are where you can focus all your attention.

Now the enemy Jungler is the one feeling pressured, Top is most likely raging at them for not ganking and you are giving mid and bot hell with your "camping". They will feel obligated to come Top, most likely I am pushed pretty far up and their Top is spam pinging. Depending on how fed I am, I can probably 2v1 or at least kill 1 of them before retreating/dying. Maybe I will just back off and the enemy Jungler will feel the pressure to make a big play and they will dive me? Doesn't matter the point is, the enemy Jungler is being forced to make plays they did not want to make by a tilted Top laner. Once that fails, they will never go Top again.

What you should be doing while they are Top, is securing Dragon and getting Bot lane Turret, if Mid needs help go ahead and gank for them, you have the freedom to go wherever you want. Mostly though, you want them Drags and you want that juicy Bot lane Turret First Blood gold, these will further help your Top laner with their lead without you even needing to go up there. From there it becomes a game of "who makes the best decisions" which will decide who wins the game.

All of that, because you put some of your time into Top lane, a lane everyone believes is an isolated island not to be touched.

Now I am sure, if you have played Jungle at all this season, you have felt the pressure of not being as present as the enemy Jungler. That is because most likely, this is what the enemy Jungler did. They went Top lane a few times then focused all their attention on Mid and Bot. So their Top is dominating yours due to a gold and experience lead all because of one early gank and now you need to worry about Mid and Bot being camped. Spare yourself the trouble and take action first or counter their Top lane pressure with Bot lane pressure and get them ahead as quickly as you can. A similar situation can happen bot lane, but the chances of 4 people bot happening and cancelling their lead is highly likely. That is why its so nice to do it Top, that will remain a 1v1 or 2v1 for majority of laning phase.

I am a lowly Silver, and perhaps these tactics don't work in high elo. That is fine, they do work in low elo, we are bad and for the most part don't know how to play when behind. Why not always get yourself ahead?

Oh and just a note, if you get the kill that is fine, but just remember that the Top laner doesn't get as much Gold and you might need to come Top several more times in order to get them a real lead. If you keep getting the kills, that is also fine, just remember that you are putting yourself in a position to be the carry and you need to fulfill that position. You can't blame your laners for losing when you are so fed, you are taking the kills and are getting the gold.

EDIT: Just to clear things up, this is merely a suggestion, an argument that Top lane is worth ganking. As with any strategy in League, there are different variables that go into whether this strategy is valid or not, for example your Jungler, how fast you can clear, the enemy Jungler, your Top laner, and your Bot lane. I am not saying "GANK MY LANE NOW!!" because no Top laner should expect their jungler to gank and should expect the enemy jungler to camp them. However I am saying that it can be worth ganking Top lane, specifially early game, which can snowball your Top lane very quickly. They are then free to push or roam which allows them to create more pressure and relieve some of the pressure on you. For the last time, this is just a suggestion not a demand.

Honestly, ganking top-lane just doesn't feel worth-while when I can gank bottom lane instead. If I successfully gank bottom lane in the early-game, we will receive:

  • Two kills
  • First Blood Tower
  • Dragon

After that, bottom lane is free to roam top and mid for objectives and the game just snowballs into a victory.

While top-lane is decent for an early kill, you won't be able to take the tower early-game (due to teleport) and top-laners tend to provide significantly less map pressure when their opponents tower falls (since most just continue splitpushing in that same lane).

It depends on your bot lane and top lane obviously, but like I said just 1 or 2 ganks and you can set your Top lane up for the rest of the game. What happens is, if they are smart, they will get 2 levels ahead of their laner and be able to dominate them. Alternatively you can pick yourself up 1-2 early kills which increases the likely hood of getting those kills bot lane. It also sort of depends on what Jungler you are playing and where you start.

Players like the OP are why I /mute all at the beginning of each game.

Shuyin1781 votes

Doing /mute all is actually a very dumb thing for you to do if I'm being honest. There is a high chance you won't have important information that could turn a fight or assist on an objective. Only mute the crybabies in matches but don't mute everyone because their chat might be useful.

Scruberz1 votes

That is what pings are for. Muting everyone makes the game far more peaceful. Any important information is still easily passed on.

Stephenizgod1 votes

Actually he is correct, there is nothing wrong with /mute all, you communicate everything you need to through pings.

Why because I think the Jungler ganking at level 2 in a 2v1 is a good idea to set up your Top laner for a free lane for the rest of the game? I don't see why you would even mute me or how muting me even effects my opinion... Basically your comment is irrelevant...

Scruberz2 votes

If I'm the jungler I'll gank the lanes I feel are best to gank for that game. I mute you so I don't have to hear your long winded complaints about getting no ganks all game if I don't happen to think your lane is worth my time.

Stephenizgod2 votes

Nowhere did I say that I will complain if you don't gank, I also didn't say "GANK TOP LANE OR YOU SUCK" or however you read it. Its called a suggestion, most junglers don't gank top lane because they see no reason to. I am offering an argument for why ganking top lane IS a good idea and how it can go in your favor, or at least for early game. Its an opinion not a fact, but like typical League player you chose to respond with toxicity and douchebaggery instead of just offering a differing opinion.

Scruberz2 votes

That's great and all but you're still on mute and I'll come up there if I want.

If I ganked top-lane at level 2 (which would involve clearing the top-side buff and immediately ganking), any competent jungler would steal my entire bottom side jungle.

Even if we get the kill, I just lost a buff, a significant amount of experience and 300-400 gold.

Stephenizgod1 votes

Like I said in response to your other comment, it depends on which jungler you are. Elise and Lee Sin are more than capable of clearing one buff then ganking, then they can just invade the enemy jungler and take their buff in response. If you know they are at your Red buff, go take theirs, you just killed the enemy top laner and so you have safety in their support if need be. For example if the mid laner comes to stop you, you can 3v1 them easily. Then you can either go bot lane or just wait for the top laner to come back to lane and kill them again.

Of course it all depends on your team comp, my post is a suggestion. Top lane is worth ganking and I explained why and how. It doesn't mean you always should gank top or that it is the best possible decision. Most Junglers never gank Top lane because they assume its worthless, it isn't worthless and sometimes it can be extremely beneficial to your entire team. The games where we are dominated are the games where their jungler comes to shut me down early making me useless for a very long time, the games I win are the games no Jungler comes top or mine does which gets me ahead and makes their Top laner useless. Again its situational, but it is a valid strategy.

I'm with the OP on this one. I play mostly mid and top, though I do go jungle every now n again so I understand the reluctance of players to gank top as it's often harder to get a sure kill and also more time consuming/risky to wear down a tank like Trundle, or go against an early lane monster like Renekton.

HOWEVER!

When the enemy top laner is overextended and pushing into your tower, they're ripe for a gank, and the risk/reward is a lot more tolerable. Plus, as OP said, investing one or two ganks early can allow top to snowball super hard, setting up a really strong front line for team fights, and allowing the jungler to concentrate on helping bot and mid through the rest of the lane phase. Not to mention allowing your top laner to roam and help the other lanes bc they took an early tower as a result of overpowering their lane opponent.

As a final piece of evidence for how an early top gank can set up a successful rest of the game, I will point to numerous videos by SoloRenektonOnly (highly ranked streamer who mains top, check him out). I can't count the number of times I've seen him allow the enemy to push, ping for a gank, and then proceed to dominate lane after said successful gank.

Finally, I just want to say its a team game, and without teamwork, you're generally fucked as far as a win goes, so keep that in mind and show your top laner some love when ya can!

Shuyin1781 votes

As a top lane main myself, I've learned to not rely on my jungler. I will request a gank when my opponent is vulnerable to them, but I don't rely on them to actually do it. Simply put, I'd rather be a distraction for the enemy team by dominating solo marking me as a larger threat they need to deal with. If jungle and/or mid wants to gank me that's perfectly fine by me. While they are doing that our jungler can be doing something else on the map while they are wasting time.

Stephenizgod1 votes

I was talking specifically to Junglers, because no lane should expect help from their Jungler. It is better to go into a match-up expecting no one will help you and that you have to win by yourself or roam. This is most true in Top lane, however the Jungler SHOULD put at least 1 or 2 ganks into your lane if they want you to win.

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Same.

I generally play tanks in the top-lane, so I don't particularly need to snowball to be useful and I trust myself to not fall behind.

I only ask for a gank when I know it is an easy kill (i.e. I have reliable CC, I have the wave near my tower, I have a control ward in the gank path) and my team would benefit from it.

or you could just gank mid make ahri so happy :3

Lol I suppose you could :)

This really depends on matchup. If the enemy top laner is a tank, the jungler isn't doing the team any favors shutting down an opponent that will be effective even at 0/8/0.

Stephenizgod1 votes

Its not shutting down, I think you are misunderstanding, it is putting ahead your own laner. Even if Poppy will still be useful at 0/8/0, doesn't mean your Top laner will be. If they are 7/0/1 all because of 1 or 2 ganks you did early game, they will be a power house in teamfight/split pushing that you don't need to worry about.

Ravenhale1 votes

Still depends on the matchup. Can my top laner solo kill them under tower with a two kill lead? You can't rely on the enemy top laner to play bad (try to fight off turret). A good tank can make it hard to even 2 v 1 them under tower. There's also the matter of whom their enemy jungler is. Are they a squishy target that will just get deleted by my top laner if they show up? There's just too many factors involved to declare early top lane ganks are always the best direction to go.

If we are talking about a battle of two Feast/Famine champs, you bet I'm watching that lane.

Why you should not put time into ganking top lane and just go bot instead:

Because this isn't season 5 anymore.
