I think it's about time we have "AD" Support!

All supports deal Magic damage, scale with AP/HP/Resistance. Why not make a champ that Scales with AD and deals physical damage?

and I was thinking why not a Monk champion that helps his team with his Meditation/chakra etc type of mechanic, and make him the LeeSin of supports.

There's enough balancing issues in bot lane already. Let's fix the itemization down there first and then talk about introducing more balance problems there.

Why would Sion need to shield his allies when he could just kill them for his ADC?

Yes. Via Stoneborn Pact. Possibly nabbing item 3174. But at least item 3109 and even sometimesitem 3401 . Personally doing quite well with Sion item 2303 item 3022 item 3109 New Runes give even better options to heal/shield allies as a Tanky AD Support. Though the lacking Rune mana regen options have nerfed (some)item 3302 users into the ground.

Not sure where you got Wukong from tho. He's a terrible support.

Have never played with either as a support? Both are hyper bullies bot. Of course Wu can get shut down way earlier then Sion pre 6 but you still should be able to get a healthy CS lead.

A monk?

You mean a Noxian Drill sergeant!

Umm,how would that work? Support itemization is build around CDR,mana regen, H&SP. What would an AD support even build and how would their kit function?

Why do we even need one, when games can be won with 4 AD and a support? I might be biased, but wouldn't RITO need to implement new items for the champion to work?

AwesomeGuyDj1 votes

The problem would be itemization is shit, first of all. 2. If they're ranged you basically have 2 ad's botlane. 3. If they're melee, they just get poked and kited way to hard.

Bârd3 votes

Sion Trundle MissFortune are viable supports.

Back before the rework, I knew I guy who played RekSai support.

The problem with an AD support is that it's hard to make someone simultaneously want to build AD and go support.

If their AD scalings are good, they would just be played as an ADC, fighter, or caster.

If their scalings aren't good, they'd just be played as a tank.

Great Ozymandius1 votes

You'd have to give them utility scaling off ad or crit. If their kit has most of the power budget sunk into team utility spells, then the champ will not solo-lane. But they will buy AD/crit if these stats improve their team utility.

It would be weird, but you could make it work.

Bârd1 votes

If they're buying AD and Crit, they'd have enough auto attack DPS that they'd be played as a carry.

They'd have high damage and high utility.

Weeeeelllllll. First of all, AD itemization is not cut out for a support style champion. The only AD items I can think of right off the top of my head that profit the entire team are Black Cleaver and Frozen Mallet. If you build AD you build for yourself and your own damage, not your team. Next up is a financial problem. Most AD items are rather expensive for the Supports level of gold income. And finally, AD is the most offensive of all scalings, so putting it on a support, whose main goal isn't necessarily damage seems a bit odd to say the least. I know there's stuff like Zyra and Malzahar played botlane, but you don't play those because of their awesome supportive qualities, do you? You play them to kill shit. Oh yeah, and defensive spells that scale with AD are horrible.

So, no. I don't believe an AD support will work. At least not with how the game currently works and definitely not with current AD and Support items

Oleandervine1 votes

Building solely offense benefits your team, because poke can create pressure which either leads to kills or forcing enemies to flee. That is indeed how poke supports work, and even every champion in the game who isn't a tank or utility/CC champion. Not every kind of support has to spam Ardent Censor, Redemption, and Locket. Pressure is just as valuable as CC or utility with a good team comp. And claiming that building pure damage doesn't benefit the team is stupid because that's what assassins, bruisers, mages, and ADCs do.

Additionally, if you want to discuss items that an AD support could possibility build, I have a list for you:

Frozen Mallet Black Cleaver Blade of the Ruined King Mortal Reminder Death's Dance Duskblade of Draktharr Rapid Firecannon Maw of Malortius Wit's End Runaan's Hurricane Edge of Night Trinity Force Statikk Shiv Yomuu's Ghostblade Ravenous Hydra Titanic Hydra

Every single one of these items can easily be built on a support budget. The most expensive single component is a Pickaxe, at 875g, and the rest are composed from Daggers, Short Swords, Brawler Gloves, and Rubies. So don't tell me that an AD support can't afford items when there are clearly plenty of items that they could build to scale up their AD.

Kloqdq1 votes

Trinity Force

3733 Gold is not something a support can budget. It's why most support items are only 2200 Gold on average. The extra 1000 gold is massive since you only band aid fix it with your support items.

Oleandervine1 votes

If you buy it all at once, yeah. But you're not buying it all at once. You can manage to still do well constructing the components, as they each individually offer great stats and passives.

Kloqdq2 votes

Even if you are buying the pieces, it still is a lot of gold when you also have support items, sight stone and you would need other key items like Knight's vow, etc. So you are banking of you being basically a second carry with a kit that likely wouldn't be designed to be a carry. So it's really hard to say, yeah this will be good.

Oleandervine1 votes

If you were an AD support, you would most likely be designed as an off carry, and wouldn't be expected to build utility. The most likely style of lane that an AD support would offer is a poke/pressure lane that focuses on murdering the enemy or forcing them out of lane, and not focused on CC and utility. Therefore, you would not need to build utility items, as your main focus would be damage.

Kloqdq1 votes

Who is saying as an AD support you couldn't have stuff like healing, shielding, etc? We are only going by the off-supports but a true AD support doesn't really exist yet. That champion could do way more than just murder the enemy.

It Hertz When IP1 votes

So you don't want an AD support, you just want to be able to play an AD fighter in the support role. This sounds less like an issue with a missing support niche and more like "I don't want to play support".

That said, if that's what you're looking for, try Illaoi. She's not AS good at support anymore since the nerfs to her Spirit Yank (whatever it's called), but her Q and E give you good poke ability, and her ult is great at deterring the enemy jungler from ganking you and your ADC unless he's really ahead. Prior to her E nerfs I got great results with her as support, since she basically stood there as the ultimate counter-engage bruiser and my ADCs got to farm in relative peace. Mid-late game she transitions pretty smoothly to a fighter IMO, but she'll be somewhat more team-reliant than solo lane Illaoi.

Just theory-crafting without numbers, but Yorick might work out in support. Proccing multiple Relic charges back to back with Q could give you some on-demand graves for his mini-horde, Dark Procession is a neat CC effect that ranged allies could benefit from, and his E deals 15% current HP damage regardless of items (i.e. good on a support budget). Mid-late game you'd transition to a more split-pushing role with ult.

No one know about Poppy support.

The last time Poppy built any AD was before her rework. Dealing physical damage =/= being an AD support.

Kloqdq1 votes

She doesn't need to build AD but she does deal it and scale with it. So yes, she was technically an AD support when she was a support, even if she is mostly just a tank.

Terchio1 votes

Nah, AD is specifically scaling with the AD stat. Please don't be one of the many who count MonkeyKing item 3078 as AD. It's Base AD, it scales far differently, and the only similarity is the physical damage, not the (bonus) AD. Poppy 's scaling, on the other hand, is primarily from enemy HP, Lethality if you are daring.

Only true AD supports I can think of are Rengar Riven , and they aren't considered viable anymore as such, really. Rengo mostly does so for heavy kill stacking and heavy playing in the bush, and Riven scaled some tankiness with some serious CC and damage. Poppy mostly facetanks well into dealing heavy CC, plus has naturally reliable damage to boot. AD isn't really viable, particularly as support, for her.

Kloqdq1 votes

Those are not and never were supports. They were carries that took the role of a support with the intention of just killing the lane with cheese and winning. By all means Poppy is an AD support because of the physical damage she deals and scales with. However, she doesn't build it merely because tank is better. It doesn't change the fact she still does fit the idea of an AD support.

Naqel3 votes

Dealing physical damage is precisely the only reason a support would be "AD" in the first place.

Ashe works, if played right. Sure, you're kinda a mess (tank keystone, Ardent, Black Cleaver, Runaan's...It's a very odd combination), but you still count as AD.

Naqel1 votes

With this build, I can see a lot of Marksmen viably going support. http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/featured/preseason-update/8300-8359?build=42202013

You get a lot of lane-staying power out of Kleptomancy, and so long as there's a gank from time to time you won't be falling too far behind on gold, even when picking up item 3303 or item 3302.

Because supports are either tanks, healers/shielders, or champs with enough base damage that they dont really need that much gold to top the charts. Not sure how a physical damage champion is going to fit in there without just going to another lane.

Remember MissFortune support? That was a thing earlier this year...

Naqel1 votes

It would be nice to have a dedicated support champion with physical scaling, but as it stands the concept itself does exist in the form of "bruiser kill-lanes" such as J4+Panth, etc.

TwitchInMyPants1 votes

TBH I think AD scaling on a support would only be fair if they're a bruiser or something by default, I don't want something that pokes as well as a spellthiefs mage to get benefits to protection for buying damage

Given how Riven gets away with an AD scaling shield for low sustain I think something like that you can cast on allies could work but I think you should have to play it like Tahm, Braum, or Sion

Milodic Mellodi1 votes

The Support role is fine as it is. Ranged Supports constantly chip away at the enemy laners by poking, we don't need one that has more presence than that (even Sona, who has her Q, has a balanced presence because of the heavy mana attrition caused by having such a presence). We don't need an AD support that goes full-on Draven at the start. The lane harassment would become unhealthy for normal gameplay, and their AD scaling would get nerfed enough that the original point of them being an AD Support would be lost. To be honest, Supports can already build offensively anyhow. There is a high risk/reward for it, and it would be considered non-meta, but if they can pull it off it then cool. Want some extra poke power, and have enough faith in your skills to keep yourself alive? Buy item 1036. There, now we have our AD Support. Voila.

Ashe with press the attack & font of life fits it. Great engage and poke for the lanes that don't have much hard engage(most enchanters).

I think beyond just a physical damage support, we need a support whose strength is also DPS, in addition to whichever utility/CC they bring. I think right now one of the biggest limitations to supports is the notion that they can never deal good damage, and that if they want to support they should always just go for this tanky, active-heavy build that doesn't at all develop on their kit. In this respect, champions like Ashe, Trundle (already a good support in some circumstances), Yasuo, etc. could be perfectly suited to support, if they were to be allowed to have both their CC/utility and their DPS valued. Even Lee Sin himself, whose kit includes an ally shield, a slow, a knockup and multiple reveals, could be a good contender in this respect. Having a support designed from the get-go to output utility and DPS could be good, but I think more work to be done to add even more picks to the position, beyond just niche fads like Support Miss Fortune or the like.

Are you talking about ad champs going support, or just supports in general? If the second, I raise you Bard Brand Zyra Malzahar Karma. These champs either have dots(which is essentially dps as they are over time) or they have short cooldown spells to barrage the enemy with(Bard's meeps and Karma's q)

If you are talking about current ad supports, then I agree with you.

Teridax681 votes

I'm mainly talking about current AD supports, though I think the supports you mentioned only get to deal good damage if they build AP, a stat that is only rarely tied to support items. With the way both AP and support stats are arranged, players who do go for those champions need to commit to either a "true" support build, which has little to no AP, or basically just a mage build, which doesn't really offer the utility they want, and is often out of the reach of a support's income. Athene's, Censer and FQC are pretty much the only AP support items out there, and neither Athene's nor Censer work on most of the champions you brought up, besides Bard and Karma, as they don't have heals or shields. Similarly, there is absolutely no intersection between AD and any kind of support-ish effect, which makes it very difficult for any AD champions to support without either going for a weaker AD build or buying utility items that have little to do with their kit.
