Anybody able to tell me why I see Darius and Illaoi banned so much?

It doesn't make a lot of sense to me, especially in ranked. It is way easier playing vs a Darius or Illaoi than any other champion with mobility, tankiness, and similar damage(Ekko and Yasuo are the biggest offenders).

Yasuo and Ekko are better than them with having similar damage(still weaker), able to stick with enemies hardcore, have few risks to go tanky, and offer more utility to the team(Yasuo CC and windwall, Ekko with 1000000 slows and a stun.)

Because they are both really good vs hard engage, and most poke champs arn't strong enough to justify a pick. Also, hard engage is way easier to execute and thus why its more popular in yolo q.

Thank you, someone that is looking at darius/illaoi picks in terms of teamfighting and league beyond the lane phase.

Darius and illaoi are banned a lot more in lower elo ( Under Plat ).

I used darius to climb out of silver to Gold 1 but then i had to drop him because people knew his weaknesses and how to abuse them. Also irelia riven and fiora all beat him up if they know what they're doing ( and they're meta ).

Oh dont forget gnar.

But yeah Both those champs are extremeeeely frustrating to fight against. My brother plays illaoi and hes not really skilled but i see him literally wreck anybody just because hes playing illaoi whos busted as fuck for new players.

You build BC into full tank but you do insane damage if set up properly. Tbh illaoi is never a bad ban in my opinion

He's still banned a lot in plat bruh

"but then I had to drop him"

I had darius climb me all the way to platinum 2, and I'm hardly a few points from my series to plat 1. Darius is viable even in higher elos. He's not necessarily meta but he works with a good amount of comps.

He is one of the best tanks in terms of peeling. It's not in the traditional sense where he can cc lock frontliners and assasins hard, but he can quickly stack and punish frontline squishies (battle mages and assassins) and his damage output forces enemy teams to have to focus him over carries lest they allow him to clean up fights. He has the best peel out of all the juggernauts due to the strength of his apprehend which can interrupt dashes and disables enemies for a rather extended amount of time as they bounce off darius's model.

It's like when I pick darius into gnar. When we get into the teamfight stage, gnar does that typical hop into the team and use his ult for a 5 man ult bullshit. I love apprehending mega gnar mid hop and watching my carries blow him up as they're given enough time to kite backwards while gnar stays in my face.

In fact, I'd argue that Darius is probably the most viable of all the juggernauts because he has actual albeit limited peel unlike Mordekaiser Garen Illaoi DrMundo

Trundle is the only other juggernaut who has decent (although much more situational and easier to get around) peel with his pillar.

The science behind darius far exceeds the relative simplicity of his kit and his laning phase.

We have different experiences.

Because they eloped....?

colesy1 votes

they're both no skill champions that are extremely oppressive in lane and teamfight monsters.

Drumkicker1 votes

People often either don't understand how to fight against darius and illaoi in low elo, or they just forget that they know it's bad to get in melee range and not attempt to dodge anything.

Malfini1 votes

Depends on the team. I almost always ban Zed or Yasuo if no one on my team plays them.

And I'm still surprise people still ban Heimerdinger.

Gigahappytown1 votes

they punish you for mistakes

bad players make lots of mistakes

this leads to darius and illaoi both pushing to your inhibitor and soloing 3 people

only bronzies ban darius or illaoi

"only bronzies..."

Not really. Darius isn't just a mistake-checker. Against certain matchups like yasuo (although his new build and the ult bug are making him oppressive against everything right now), darius simply gives certain champions an incredibly hard time.

Darius can be a respectable ban when you want to go certain top lane champions like Nasus Akali Sion Yasuo Graves Poppy Shen champions that Darius can actually gasp outplay as opposed to them "making mistakes" and him punishing.

Banning darius is a smart idea when you're running a lower damage than usual comp with only one or two damage oriented champions (Darius excels at punishing tanks who prolong fights with their low damage). Banning Darius is a smart idea if you're running a comp that has a lot of engage but limited disengage since he doesn't have to spend too much time trying to run at you and getting kited.

because kiting is hard

Isn't Illaoi item 3742 item 3009 item 3044 pretty core?

Revali1 votes

Deadmans actually isn't that good on ill imo, situational sure, but not needed, i'd rather have a item 3143

just my opinion

Randuins is overall better than dead mans. Dead mans took too many nerfs into the face and is more of a noob trap 90% of the time. Randuins gives way better combat stats even against no crit teams and the active is insane.

Revali1 votes

imo deadmans kinda evolved into a jg item than a lane one.

MissingKayo1 votes

Because no one knows how to play against them and would rather QQ about them being OP.

People don't like laning against Illaoi or Darius because they can be oppressive in lane. I don't really have issues with them and almost never ban them. Lower Elo players feel that they are too strong, but lower Elo player have no idea how to lane or how to farm under tower.

So if they get shoved under tower they miss CS and because they miss CS they fall behind. Both champions are harder to kill early and a lot of Silver and Bronze players rely on kills to "come back" in laning.

I don't think the bans are reflection of the champions' strengths, they are a reflection of lower skilled players being unable to adapt their playstyle.

I ban champions that have high play rates such as Yasuo Jhin Gangplank and I will ban champions that alter the dynamics of a game such as Blitzcrank Morgana and Leblanc.

Illaoi is a nightmare to lane against if you're not hypermobile She's also sleep af right now Expect her to rise up after the other top tiers get nerfed

BeatzBoyFTW1 votes

Darius : Can be really pressuring if you're playing a pure melee champion.

Illaoi : Not strong. Just that everyone realizes what her kits does after she was forgotten 8 months after her release.

zlumpy1 votes

Probably already been said but people ban what they hate or can't play well against. Is Illaoi easy to play aginst? Yup. But people remember that one time they didnt escape her ult and they got wombod soooo... yeah.

I do it to tbh. I hate Zed. He isn't amazing just annoying. So I ban him out.

Irelia Bot1 votes

Really not enjoyable to have to play against.

destroyer BOT 16

Yasuo and Ekko are champs that take skill, and, as a result, are basically freelo in lower elos cuz nobody can play them correctly. Whereas Darius (not sure bout illaoi) is a easier champ and in lower elos, where nobody knows how to counterplay, is considered OP causing bans.
