The thing isn't even about Tristana, is that there are literally two types of meta viable at the moment:

snowball early that develop in an even bigger snowball mid game (and if you can't won there you just lose, It doesn't matter how good your champions mid game is)
very strong late game monsters that can burst you down istantly/never die (or both)

What the hell are those Varus picks? I mean, really Western coaches? Varus hasn't been a strong lane bully for quite a long time now, and surely isn't a great late game champ. His strengths are in mid game which is literally the least viable thing around to win unless you are Korean and you literally dominate the objective control game

It's more about how Gigabytes excel in those unexpected lane swaps (Rip SoaZ) , the double jungle, & the unexpected "Let's go in one by one against a fed Tristana" at that last minute.

FNC not drafting a strong lane bully for sOAZ is just baffling given that top lane match-up should have been the most favourable to exploit. Maokai is completely meh at the moment compared to any lane bully like Galio or Jarvan

Who exactly could soaz have picked that can lane bully level one one vs two or lane bully while under leveled? Both top laners were underleveled because of the lane swap. Further, Galio is not the lane bully he once was. Their lane swap swapped Galio away. And when Soaz came down to help with the 5 man party in the bot lane, he still was level 1 because of it.

Literally any meta pick or pocket counter pick in top lane has better early laning than Mao.

Lane swap was not something FNC could predict in pick/ban anyway, so the Mao pick still make no sense in hindsight

You can't force the events to go your own way, especially vs a team like GAM which always try to impose its style, if you got at disadvantage on piccks side

Mao is the classic "safe engage pick" that is not going to work in that scenario
