Is it good to follow the meta?

Is it better to follow the meta like top fighter/tank mid mage/assassin and support adc bot than to lane however I want? I have a friend who doesn't follow the meta and goes to whatever lane he wants and build ad for mages like Ahri. I think that the ap scaling thing wouldn't help mage if the mage go ad though.

No, you do not have to follow the meta by any means. However, they meta is the meta because well, it is what is known to work the best. Off meta doesn't mean disaster by any means, it just isn't thought of too be great. While ad Ahri in this case doesn't make much sense whatsoever as she doesn't have anything scaling off ad or that long of attack range, one can still do well with it I suppose.

Ideally if you can swing it you actually want to try to counter what the meta is in a way that doesn't confuse your team. The thing about the meta (as seen in tournaments) is that you can counter it, but in tournaments the opposing team adapts to those counters via communication. In pub matches they rarely do, at low levels they never do. That said if you can counter it do it. That's to say in a smart way not in an "AD Ahri" way which is just stupid.

If you can get a group of 5 to do something different, then have fun. I've seem all types of set ups that would be considered "trolling" yet they were very effective, regardless of whether they won or not.

I am very comfortable with taking certain ADCs mid or top. Tristana Corki Ezreal Quinn , these are the ones most suited to do so. They all have an escape ability and will either scale well or have powerful early game damage.

I also will play KogMaw AP. It's quite good late game. Even more unusual I rather play it top lane with the teleport so I can just focus on farming for longer rather than having early game map presence I would need in the mid lane

I also play Lulu mid or top sometimes. Usually when the other champs on the team have great scaling. I used to do this way before it was ever popular and acceptable.

I rarely choose a front line tank as it's not the way I like to fight. When I play my mages or ADCs top we just have to play as a team a little differently.

But I don't goof around. I build my champions seriously most of the time. There's a difference between playing a champ in another lane or testing AP jax/ AD Ahri

Competitively, the meta is the most optimal strategy to success,

For funs sake, the meta is boring and predictable.

BACK IN MY DAY, WE DIDNT HAVE A META. KILL OR BE KILLED ASHE MID.

on a different note, if youre building AD on a mage with zero scaling, youre not doing it right....

HOWEVER.. I've come to terms with Katarina building AD is the most broken lane bully for bot lane, given a stun / healer. heres proof.. this was in ranked.

also. tank AP/AD Corki mid is literally the best thing since vegan butter

what were you trying to say here. No clue, You are restating your self in your thought.

Anyways yes you should learn the meta. That said that the meta is more flexible that you think. Liss top is an example of this. Meta is meta for a reason and your only level 20. Til you understand why things are the way they are you should follow and learn it.

AD ahri is just plain stupid. Yes any range champ can be built AD but should they? There are plenty of ADCs that actually have bonuses effects for auto attacking. From some reason people think they are clever for taking AP champs and running them AD, they really are not.

Sometimes. The meta is the popular strategy for winning. Doesn't mean that it's optimal. Also, there will always be times where off meta picks can work. Correct answer is "It depends".

As far as roles are concerned, I don't really care who goes where, as long as ADC and support go in the same lane.

What irritates me is when people try to duo top/ no jungler. Against a team with a jungler, duo top will always lose. This is because the team with the jungler has no challenges contesting dragon, has more total xp/gold across the team (which WILL be felt come midgame), and the jungler can farm both sides of the map for extra gold and gank mid/bot nonstop with absolutely no threat of counterganks.

I dont care what and where you play as lng as you dont fuq up who ever lost a game due to non meta? nawp, you lost cuz u fuqed up bro

It's pretty simple. As long as your entire team forms something like a cohesive composition, you'll be fine. It doesn't really matter too much where champions go. Ezreal mid and Vayne top are somewhat normal.

Also, for those who do not know how AD Ahri works, she builds like Ezreal. Muramana->Trinity. She has a few gimmicks.
-She has non-ultimate hard CC, which no other Marksman brings.
-Her super mobility is really strong on a Marksman. -Her ult and skills all work well with Trinity. -Most importantly, and the entire reason why she works, is because all three Fox Fire charges apply full Muramana damage because they count as single target spells. This means if you land a charm you get an instant and automatic 4 extra Muramana procs from just Charm+Muramana. Add Trinity proc auto attacks and you burst absurdly hard.

And just like Ezreal, the farther the game goes beyond that 25 minute uber power spike, the weaker she gets in comparison to the late game Marksmen.
