How does one use Gangplank's Powder Keg in a teamfight?

Any advice on how to use the new Gangplank in a team fight? The changes made him into a good lane bully, but I have trouble having presence past laning phase unless I dominate my lane.

I find that when I try to use his E late game, their adc just destroys the keg before I can even trigger the explosion. Should I even bother using his E to deal damage in a teamfight, or should I just rely on his pistol for damage and use the keg to chase and renew passive?

A few tricks are ...

Firstly, make sure you've enough barrels stored up to make a combo. Set one down near you away from the enemy, then drop a bunch on the enemy ASAP and ignite them with the primed one. If you are being chased, place one far ahead of you, then, when it's ready to go, drop some behind you and ignite the closest one. This gets off a big chunk of damage and slows the enemy down. The other good one is the classic 'face check' which I imagine you can understand.
