Why do some support mains act like they are immune to criticism?

DISCLAIMER: This is just my opinion of a few support mains, not the majority. If you are a support main and this does not describe you, then congratulations, this thread does not apply to you.

A lot of the time I will read threads on here and Reddit that give the impression that support players are paragons of selflessness for playing a role that doesn't focus around getting kills. This somehow makes them less toxic, annoying, angry, and a better overall human being than the average League player and we should all worship them.

Fine, I get it. Your role is to help the team win by offering utility, and that is a great and important role. But why does that simple fact make support players think they're better than everyone else? Support players routinely caricature their ADCs as toddlers and crybabies, whereas they themselves can do no wrong... for the sole reason that they are the support. It makes no sense. Maybe your ADC was right in going aggro and you were in the wrong for playing passive? Maybe your ADC was right in hanging back rather than following a bad engage from the support? Maybe the ADC is right in criticizing his support for the lack of ward coverage? In all of these instances, if an ADC legitimately brings up issue with the support's play, then he is automatically toxic, and the support is a victim. Why? Sometimes supports will leave lane altogether and make their ADC go 1 vs 2 in lane because the ADC brought up issue with the support's play. However, if the support criticizes the ADC, it's considered fine. It's a double standard.

Every other role in this game is liable to legitimate, constructive criticism. If my jungler doesn't apply any map pressure, I have a legitimate reason to criticize that gameplay. If my mid laner isn't roaming properly or at least pushing a lane while the enemy mid laner is roaming, I can bring that up. If my top laner is feeding kills rather than playing passive under tower, I can tell my top laner to hug turret and it's no big deal. However, if I tell my support to drop more wards or help peel the enemy tank off of me, all of a sudden they act as if they have been brutally insulted and then everyone on the team flocks to console the victim of this most grievous assault.

This massive sense of entitlement makes some support mains think that no matter what, they weren't the reason the team lost; rather, it's always because the toxic ADC, the useless jungler, the no damage midlaner, or the feeding top laner screwed it up. No, the game couldn't possibly have been lost because the support was just terrible at CC, warding, or using peel. Remember, because they are so selfless for playing support, they are immune to your criticism.

TL;DR: I love supports. Some support mains, however, seem to think that they are better than everyone else on their team for the sole fact that they are selflessly playing support. Step off the high horse and realize that you are no different from anyone else on the team.

"Why do some [insert role here] mains act like they are immune to criticism?"

Support main here, I agree, I really do not understand the generalization "all ADC mains are meanies and all support mains are nice" that I see quite often.

I see nice people in every role, and rude people in every role; no role should be stereotyped more negatively than others.

because there's a certain circlejerk who believes that putting a ward in a bush is the pinnacle of mechanical skill

I know where you're going with this, but it's usually a rarity and when that support does wrong elsewhere, the myth is quickly dispelled.

Ever had a soraka think she was leona? I have. Ever had a taric refuse to heal? I have...

ever had a mobile ADC dash passed the minions and get instakilled for challening 2 full health enemy champions, thinking that they would win because they're "vayne" or any other powerful ADC.

oh, it's even more fun when the ADC jumps in when there's a jungler in the bush...

it's fair game really, but usually the supports that do you wrong aren't really a support main and are playing because they heard that support is an AFK role

as a support main I would pretty much never insult the adc either in-game or in any other public venue. it's a roleplay thing.

however the jungler can eat a fat chode for farming sated while enemy amumu camped our lane. you ever hear of the fucking adCARRY how about help them instead of thinking you're going to carry with your little bonus magic damage.

Are you kidding me?

More often than not people gang up on the support, and expect them to only be a warding machine. A support could end the game with 40 some wards total, but the jungler without an upgraded trinket will say something like, "a shame we didn't have enough vision, our support was terrible." I see supports frequently get ganged up on when a team fight goes badly, and flamed hard. It's the role I pick when my main role top lane is picked, and top laners outside of Riven don't really have a reputation for being toxic.

What game have you been playing? On the boards there are frequently people who post threads claiming that supports get carried and have no impact on the game.

Like someone else said, there are far more circle jerks for the ADCs, and there was a big thread about that just the other week here. You're seeing what you want to see.

Anytime a support main makes a thread asking for item diversity for supports, especially with sightstone, a bunch of people rush in and downvote claiming that the item is going to be abused by other roles without listening to any of the ideas. Riot barely listens to support mains on that subject.

we're like this because we developed a thick skin from hyprocritcal douchebags who may or may not be the ADC in our lane. we ingore criicism because it hurts when it happens all the time, its a defense mechanism. when you critcize instead of advise you make us very defensive.

Regardless of role, you don't exactly have a right to criticize your teammates, as they may mistake it as being "toxic" and "rude" (it's strange how easily people can get offended) Your team's morale is important, especially in solo q

Try to offer tips without directly insulting them for example "Hey Thresh, could you upgrade your trinket/ or could you try to ward objectives and buy some pinks?"

So basically, it doesn't matter what role people are in. You'll find people who suck, no matter what role they play. And since bot is the main lane where you'll almost always find 2 people together in, it's the one lane that sprouts all the arguments, since it's always the other person's fault.

I go into every game treating everyone the same, don't care what you're playing. Now that might change if you start throwing a tantrum and acting like a toddler. There are entitled turds playing every role, it's just how a game like this is. I personally play support because that's what I want to play. I don't think I'm better than anyone else, I just think it's the spot I can personally impact the game best with my skillset.

I play both support and ADC. I usually don't say much, but I do try to keep my team positive. I try to stop them from flaming each other and encouraging them. And if my ADC does something wrong, I'll tell them it's okay and do ??? next time. And if I'm ADC, and my support doesn't ward or something, I'll give him/her a little reminder, like can you ward river? or We're a bit behind! Let's play passive so I can farm up. Sometimes I do get mad at my ADC if he/she constantly misses CS so I just start taking the minions he/she missed l0l. (30% of bronze/silver ADCs can't LAST hIT!!) I think the role of the support is to, well, support the team. I hate it when my team is yelling at each other. Because flaming your 0/3 top laner usually makes them play worse, rather than saying Hey, you're losing lane, play passive for now and we'll come help later! This usually encourages them and stops the enemy top laner from snowballing into an unstoppable beast. Haha I went really off topic.

In ranked, I've met a lot of different ADCs. There are.. the ones that don't communicate. The ones that only communicate through pings. The really nice ones who are positive and don't get mad even if we're losing lane, or if we're winning, they say gj! everytime we get an objective, win a team fight, get a kill, etc. And last but not least.. The flaming, toxic, really mean ADC. However, I rarely get those :>

As for supports... Yeah. We do get treated really well sometimes, but there are also games where we're just. I don't know. Flamed to hell. I was in this one game, where enemy bot lane lost terribly, and everyone on enemy team was flaming the support for not warding, missing all their skill shots, being unskilled, etc. However! The best feeling is saving your teammates with a really good bubble or using a mikaels on them right before they die and save them :D And then they treat you like you're a god xD
