mundo support. good idea or no?

I was going to try DrMundo as support with my duo partner tonight in some team builder. Just curious if anyone has tried it and has some tips?

I was going to build him like I do top, just pure tank with the addition of some utility Like relic shield , banner or locket. His Q could make for decent harrass. He can eat skillshots for days. with most the supports I'm seeing these days being Janna, Soraka And Thresh I think he could be good. I'm just worried about not having enough peel to defend against ganks.

Viable. He wouldn't be a top tier support, but if you love playing mundo then yeah go for it.

The biggest problem is he doesn't have great peel, just the slow from the cleavers.

If you wanted a tank as support, and not the more common ones, you can always go Shen. Hes tanky, can peel, taunt, and his q on a target gives the adc health back. You can also go voli, mao, nunu, galio

I did really well with Mundo support! Well except when the ADC fed over and over and said from minute 1 that he would not do well bc he doesn't have a real support. He is one of the few champions that actually scale off of Relic+Sightstone. I recommend playing him with a late game back-line carry like Jinx or Tristana. With his passive+relic sustain and his consistent free poke(put all points in Q), you can guarantee a lot of free farm. I haven't played him in season 5, but Zz'rot+Banner would be a great way to add pressure to the lane while getting as tanky as you need to(no one will focus you anyway unless you're way out of position). Mundo has tons of follow up potential with cleaver spam+his sustained dmg. Any jungler with hard lock down will basically get free kills in your lane and that's also another reason you work well with Jinx. You also can go ward almost wherever you want since you'll be tanky and have cleavers+ult+w tenacity to get away easily. Unfortunately, Mundo support is pretty lackluster against dive comps like Zed+Vi which are really popular right now. He has no hard peel, just cleavers as the ADC kites but you can't kite a Vi ult(works really good against champs like Volibear though). And especially since you won't have any farm, you'll be in a pickle when your carry dies.

not a good idea. mundo offers nothing to his team in terms of actual 'support.'

he has no heals and his crowd control is a minor slow from his cleaver. without items mundo is actually extremely weak, as he primarily excels as a lategame scaling champion. the philosophy behind mundo is that he is able to sit on top of an enemy carry and soak damage while dealing a fair amount, being incredibly annoying. without his big, expensive, defensive items he is not really capable of doing this.

you would be much better playing a champion like braum instead.

all great stuff here people! thanks! Ive tried a few games with him now, so i figured id leave an update on this trial for those interested. The first game was rough mostly because my ADC partner and I had a tough time with the synergy, he is used to being very aggressive because I typically play some in-your-face supports like Leona, so I had to get him to sit back and just farm while i zoned, and to be wary more so of ganks.

Games 2+ have gone waay better. We have found that freezing our lane just outside of turret range is ideal, as I can zone easy with safety of the tower to fall back on when an enemy gank comes. He has been working well with Jinx, Tristana, Ashe and Cait. they all have OK disengage/escape/safety. He does scale really well off of relic shield and Sightstone. Drawbacks of obviously the lack of peel. And the Defensive builds really aren't that expensive on him.

my typical build (a pretty standard tank support/utility build) has been item 3401 item 3117 item 2045 item 3065 item 3143 with a final item being needs sensitive, so possibly a item 3151 item 3190 item 3060 item 3075 item 3083 item 3512 are all things ive played around with for the final part of my build, some of the more utility items ive snuck in earlier in the build, for example ill build a Banner of Command early on if we are already snowballing hard to just add even more lane pressure. so realistically the low cost of the boots/sightstone/ eventual Face of the Mountain finish offsets the Large Defensive item costs. Average Full build cost of 12,300g if u get to full build.

i would never try this with out my duo partner though, it takes great synergy and communication to pull off. Obviously he is not a tier one support, but he is decent to have in the back pocket i think, as he will come as a surprise most of the time. I am always first pick for my fives team, so i Could see picking Mundo Support blind, to throw the enemy team off. I am going to mess around with some Shen support as well as someone here mentioned, and Lee Sin Support has been fun as well. Dont worry though fellow Yolo Q'ers , i still play my traditional supports when I Q up alone, Best Leona in Bronze baby.. (just kidding, i havnt proved that yet) Happy hunting.
