Ghostblade/Righteous Glory Darius?

Darius's main problem is getting kited and not being damaging enough when he actually does get in range. You COULD play Darius as a pure peeler, but even hardcore peeling top laners like Maokai can also engage if needed. Not being able to engage as a top laner is a huge issue.

I think that a build like Darius item 3142item 3143 item 3800 item 3075 item 3156 item 3047 essentially solves all his problems. With item 3800 and item 3142 , Darius overcomes his main weakness: actually touching the enemy team. Even with an initiator, Darius is often too slow to respond in time.

In lane, all the items help you: brutalizer is an amazing rush item for damage, Catalyst gives Darius much needed sustain, and you can just sit on Avarice and farm if you are crushing your lane opponent as Darius often does against melees. Once you have item 3142 or item 3800 you will be a threat in teamfights; get one of them depending on what you need at the time (damage vs. sustain) and get the other as you see fit. I'd still say get both since later on, you'd probably need sustained speed and activate the items in sequence.

This final build is also not that expensive compared to most bruiser builds, since the most expensive single component is the pickaxe (bought to last-finish Maw) and doesn't require completion of a Hydra or another high priced damage item gold sink.

My build solves the problem before it becomes a problem. I start off building item 3077 and turning that into item 3074 for early damage and bullying. then I build item 3068 for some health and armor. After that i build item 3072 for the sustain, then item 3075 for extra armor and taking more damage. At this point you're already carrying, but if I can i'll build another item 3072 or item 3153 for more lifesteal and/or attack speed. Works almost all the time unless the other team has a fed Teemo or something devastating.

righteous glory could be a legit item for darius, especially late game when he just gets kited all day. you'd probably want to save it for your 5th or 6th item, though

Any non-meta champion with a non-meta build is probably not a solution to that non-meta champion's weaknesses. Trading movement speed for combat stats would at its very most be "slightly good". In this case I actually think the way those stats would shift compared to a Darius building hydra into full tank would be very poor. Do mind movement speed != engage. Maokai wants to speed up in order to get in range of his engage, but only at the mere cost of trading resistances for mana and HP. The more you'd specialize in making sure someone is fast enough for an engage - for instance by building Youmuu's - the less you will get out of being able to pull off that engage. The same applies for all those silly people who still think damage builds on gnar outside of bruta or hex is any good. The rule of thumb is you don't need more engage, you just need more strength behind it. And honestly, this is why Darius is so weak right now - his sacrifice of mobility does not give him the required amount of damage in return, thus making him almost universally weaker than, say, Riven.

I find that Righteous Glory alone is usually enough to turn Darius into a decent initiator. Obviously you're no Malphite, but if an enemy squishy is ever out of position it'll ensure they burn flash at the very least. Ghostblade just seems like overkill honestly - if they were far enough away that you needed Ghostblade's MS to reach them, they were probably far enough away that brute-forcing an engage would be unwise anyways.

I personally prefer to go Hydra -> RG -> rest full tank on Darius, since oftentimes in Solo Queue your team has enough damage and is just looking for a tanky top-laner. Hydra is easy to build piecemeal, gives great splitpushing power, and good enough damage in early teamfights that you can end up snowballing the game from an early dragon fight. Then RG fixes all your immobility and mana problems and gives you a boatload of HP to boot, so you can start building specialized resist items for the mid-late game.
