Who is a good champion who has a good mix of Offense, Defense and can fill multiple roles?

So recently, I wanted to buy a champion who is good in damage and has good defense for mainly Top lane. I played a lot of garen as he has really good AD scaling with little AD needed to dish out a crap ton of damage, plus he is naturally tanky with a crap ton of sustain. However, due to his inability to deal with champs such as gnar and the new rework towards garen, I am starting to lean away from him. I am between a rock and a hard place as I do not have a exact champion in mind to buy. The thing is, I do not have a giant pool of IP and I don't have the luxury to grind 8 games a day to power farm IP and every champ I buy will be worth 15-30 days worth of playing.

Currently, I do have a few champions in my mind to purchase:

Jarvan: He has a decent poke, mobility and high damage with a good defense ability. However he lacks sustain without life steal or HP regen.

RIven: High mobility with insane damage and burst. good shield that scales with offense and short cooldown, Scales so fuking hard. However, maybe squishy and can be deleted with CC and burst, no real poke and is vulnerable to poke.

Gnar: crap ton of poke and CC, 7 abilities and is a yordle! However needs to be in mega Gnar to use GNAR!

Nidalee: POKE, INSANE POKE, HEAL, VISION CONTROL, MOBILITY, 7 ABILITIES? OP? however is quite squshy and is not the best team fighter.

Jayce: adc? brusier? 7 abilities? uhhhhh, high AD ratios? yes plz! However, he doesn't have natural tank abilites and can't really be built full tank.

Irelia: if you look up OP in google, her face will be the first thing u see. Sustain? check. Burst? check. CC? check. works like a beast with sheen. However, is vulnerable to a poke like champ. (Probably the best choice for me.)

Hecarim: great spamable abilities and sustain with great Teamfight ability. However, high mana cost and sustain not the greatest.

Or should i wait if riot comes out with the next champ?

So, this is the list I kinda put together and for your information, i currently own these champions: Sion cho'gath sivir annie master yi yasuo katarina ashe nunu Gangplank poppy ryse udry vladimir warwick nasus morgana tryndamere azir braum amumu tristana xerath

and thx for taking the time for reading. :D

(edit) BTW: Holy carp! (lol, see what i did?) Thanks guys! really appreciate the help you guys are giving me so far and I really have some things to think about. right now, i'm going to wait for the free weeks to give some of these champs a test run and see who i like and who fits my play style. THANKS!

Nautilus, can put him top jung or supp and do well. Good innate damage packed in with great cc, high health and moderate mobility.

I play Garen as both a top laner and a mid laner fairly successfully if that helps. I also always pick Garen into Gnar, and have only lost one lane in that matchup in recent memory.

To be honest, if you want a mix of offense and defense, then bruisers/fighters are the class/role for you. They were made with that intention. Most of them will fill multiple roles. I wouldn't exactly take other classes into consideration for this.

I have a feeling you might like Renekton given that you need a top laner who can do a decent amount of damage as well as have some defense. He can be played mid and jungle but top lane he's actually both alot of fun as well as decently masterable and competitively balanced.

I have alot of fun with him every time he's on free week so maybe give him a try! Plus at 4800 IP you won't feel as burned if you don't like in in comparison to a 6300 champion.

Now i know you're not gonna like this champ but hows this one. Lulu. She is the most well-rounded versatile champ there is. Great poke, the only player with 3/4 abilities as cc, extremely hard to kill and is always a factor even if she loses lane. You won't be building her tanky or heavily into defense but her kit allows her the amount of utility to just absolutely shut down a lot of people. Lulu is mostly taken into match ups where champs are dive or duel related. She doesn't do well in sustain match ups though, unless you can connect with her auto attacks.

but if you like irelia, i would definitely say she's at the top for the things that you are looking for. Fun champ, easy to snowball, ridiculous lane presence.

Okay.... So hear me out. Cassiopeia Her passive alone with her amazing sustain damage puts her at a very high damage threat. Her stun provides a lot of peel and can turn around a fight. Some builds work very well with her making her very strong as long as you can kite: item 3065 item 3003 item 3116 item 3027 item 3151 item 3143 You won't kill her late game but she will destroy you, You can kite ANYONE, and have amazing sustain with passive and e spam. If you need damage or your ahead, you can go more offensively, I normally play this build top for the decent tank and amazing stun with very very very good carry potential. Fed Katarina? Stun her. W under her. Spam e. What Katarina?

Now when she is not a tank, you are not in the middle soaking damage, but you are more of the peeler on your team. If someone gets close to the person you want to protect you stun them and poison E spam and they are dead. Not to mention all of your damage is sustain based, with a massive AP boost at 500 stacks around late game, making you just a monster late game.

How about Singed? He does decent damage with his poison and flip and can be built as a bulky AP bruiser with items like item 3027 and item 3116.

Gonna have to agree with the Irelia pick. Good damage, relatively tanky, great gap closer, and great at securing kills. It's very easy to snowball with her. She's also not super hard to play.

Nidalee is only squishy if you build her that way. I like a RoA/Iceborn build for top lane. She uses Spellblade very well. If you manage Hunted marks and time your transformations and pounces well, she is amazing at moving around a teamfight, and spammable AoE slow even gives her limited ability to peel. Her ability to heal allies and boost an ADC's attack speed should not be discounted. A tanky Nidalee can sustain a whole team, and play support from any position without sacrificing her own ability to make an impact. She's not as straight up tanky as some others, but her level of sustain is unmatched (especially with Athene's), and she can come back from an absurd number of bad trades.

That said, I think Irelia is probably the best pick. She's naturally suited to tanky builds, without having to sacrifice damage, and you can prioritize either trait as needed. Sustain, crowd control, mobility, free Tenacity, roaming potential, and impressive damage even as a tank. If you were already leaning this way, I say do it.

Lulu can support/mid/top all the same. She's also pretty fun. Fizz can mid/jg/top. Annie can mid/support/top (wouldn't recommend top) Twisted Fate can pretty much fill honestly. Orianna and Zyra can mid/support (Zyra can actually jungle too) Nidalee can also pretty much fill. Kayle can fill. Ezreal can mid/adc Cass can mid/top Ekko can mid/top/jg but i don't think he's very good. J4 can top/jg/mid Volibear can top/jg/support Anivia can mid/support Diana can jg/mid/top Lux can mid/support Yasuo/Zed can mid/top

Edit: Contrary to popular belief, Riven is actually hard. Whoa? What? Riven...difficult? No one thinks she's difficult because they play her in bronze/silver and the enemy top laner just tilts for literally no reason. Theres a lot of things you need to learn to be an actual good Riven player, otherwise you'll just play like shit. She has an absolute ton of potential animation cancels and if you're playing against a top laner who's actually good, knowing how to do the fast Q combo consistently is crucial, or you'll likely lose. Theres a lot of combos with her like using her Q twice, flashing then using her third Q to jump over a wall immediately after the flash to catch up to someone. There are also corner cuts, wall hops and even turret hops that you should learn with her Q to play her efficiently. If you mess up the corner cut/wall hop, you either just died or lost your kill.

I also don't think Gnar is a great soloq pick. You won't have near as many opportunities to TP in for ganks or team fights. You also can't communicate with your team fast enough so they know how long they have to wait before engaging so you can TP in with a full rage bar so you can ult immediately. If you miss his ultimate or you lose Mega Gnar right before a team fight or in the middle of a team fight, you've pretty much lost all of your impact.
