Does support Twisted Fate work?

I am a support main and I play Sona the most. In all of the mages out there, TF is one of my favorites. His kit seems to be good for support. I have searched online for anything involving TF support and didn't find much. I want to try out if he can support because I really think he can do well.

His blue card is like Sona's Q-Passive. It is strong basic attack with more damage, but better because it restores mana so he doesn't need mana pots which I always buy for Sona and Soraka. His passive usually won't happen but when the ADC isn't around, killing minions won't hurt. His red and gold cards are good for disengaging or chasing which are great in lanes and in fights. His wildcards keep enemies at bay so it can deny minion kills for enemy ADC since they have to run away from the cards. His ult reveals enemies which is great and I have envisioned a situation like this:

Caitlyn and TF bot lane, the enemy laners ran away due to low health. TF uses ult, revealing the enemies, Caitlyn can now ult the enemy adc, the TF uses gate with a gold card in hand to teleport near the enemies and stun the support so he can't tank the shot and then finish them off.

Not sure if that can really happen but it seems a pretty possible situation. Just like support Kennen, it is a workable role I would like to play, I would like to know if it is going to work well and if it doesn't, why. Thanks.

Fun for lol's, but don't see it working if the enemy is equal skill leveled. As you pointed out, passive isn't going to be great. Lot of support games you get something around 20 cs. 20x1~6, at best you're going to get a whopping bonus 120 gold for that. =o That's a green ward and a red pot, and a massive 10gold to spare! WHOOOOOOOOOO!

TF is balanced around getting lots of bonus gold/farm for his mid/late game items. If you take enough cs for the passive to be worth anything at all, your adc's going to be hurting by midgame.

Also the only thing you can do support-wise is red/gold card to peel enemy off your adc. And you're squishy yourself, so you'll need to keep your distance and that's going to make peeling that much harder. Also you have to plan ahead cause your gold card isn't going to be instantly on top when they decide to dive you.

Wild card is good poke, but it also runs the risk of dashing the whole minion wave and ks'ing cs, or pushing the wave up too far and make you more vulnerable to jungle ganks, and you won't be able to handle those as well as other supports, as you only have the 1 stun and there will be 3 enemies closing in on you. (you could red card..but only if all 3 are in a fairly small area...)

The ulti could be good for roaming/shoving other lanes/ganking/taking dragon/towers safely, but not much moreso than good warding. Also they get a global warning that you're doing something, so it might make them check dragon or back off before you can tele in.

Morgana/Lux have as good/if not better poke and cc as TF early on, while also having shields to help your adc out.

Basically every engage, you're going to have to play -better- than them to just break even with your damage trades. And you'll have to outplay them by a lot to actually legit win.

TL;DR: Why do it when you could just faceroll Lux and get the same results?

i think the reason that this isn't played much is first, TF needs items to have any relevant damage. Past the first few levels, his wild cards will be hardly noticeable.

Also, his utility isn't that high. He has either a single target stun, or an aoe slow, not even both, whereas traditional supports have much more utility and cc.

And lastly, his range is rather short. For an AP supp, he has very little range, besides his q, which stated before, is not that useful beyond early game harass, and most AP supports have long range abilities, to make it harder to trade with them. TF doesn't have any of the range.

Hope this helped!

Why are AP mids taken support and why does XXX work/not?

They are taken for their high base damages and utility, such as Annie or Vel'Koz.

Some are high risk-high reward, like Vel'Koz or Xerath. You can get fed bot and be a second AP mid, or lose lane and be next to useless, and are generally not strong or safe picks.

Some are low risk-high reward, namingly Annie. Her utility protects her from being completely useless if shut down (i.e. her stun) and her base damages and scaling are good enough without much damage, which is why she is taken.

Specifically, TF wouldn't really work because:

  • he would push constantly with Q
  • short range W
  • not amazing base damage
  • cant make use of his passive
  • squishy
  • needs items to be effective

if you try hard enough you can play any champ support. The biggest problem I'm seeing straight away is his stun is about as telegraphed as it gets, but honestly you could play around it.

Try it, might be fun :)

Just for fun I've been trying out support Twisted Fate in unranked queue (this is around Worlds 2015).

As previously pointed out, TF lacks some utility: W has too short range to effectively land stuns and slows on fleeing enemies, and by the time you can use it in a teamfight the enemy ADCs and APCs are in range to kill you. However, the cooldown is short and it can be used to interrupt enemies more than once during a fight (if you survive), Unless the battle is over in less than 5 seconds.

Getting a Spellthief's Edge at the start and upgrading it lands you with 50AP and a secondary AOE slow. It also rewards lane-bullying with Q, since each hit on an enemy champion or building will give you gold (5gp for SE, 10gp for Frostfang and FQC , 3x/30s).

The downside is that Q consumes a lot of mana, so you will need to land Blue Ws whenever you can. However if the enemy champs aren't bullying you aggressively then Blue Ws is actually a pretty decent alternative to early mana-regen items.

If you prioritize AP your Q can actually contribute in teamfights and gives you way to contribute from a distance (way outside the range of most melee carries) while you wait for W to cool down.

As for your ult, it is useful for detecting ganks when the team is pushing a lane, it's a way for you to contribute even when you aren't there. A well-timed ulti can reveal the incoming champs and let your team preempt the enemy's initiation (or just show them a way out). Being able to teleport in with the ult and help out is good, but it's not always necessary. This is especially useful when no-one wants to ward (which is all the time in unranked :P, in my experience).

In this role you will be running around a lot and not getting a lot of farm, so getting Luden's Echo can be a good investment.

Finally, as a somewhat mediocre TF player, I'm able to get 50-70 cs, so gold isn't THAT bad, especially with gold from FQC, kills and towers. ~12,000gp isn't unreasonable for a match.

Keep in mind however that I'm kinda mediocre (lvl 22, lvl 2 TF). But I also don't fight pros, so it kinda evens out.
